04/19/24. Hoyt Masonry rebuild my chimney from the ground up The demolition work was done in one day were talking about a 30 foot chimney. the work area is always tidy each day. The new chimney looks great now. Sean and his crew did a fantastic job rebuilding it. He is very knowledgeable in his work and is very easy to work with . I have used Hoyt Masonry for so many aspects of my home in Newburyport, MA. They are the best. Sean is very responsive and super communicative. Their prices are fair (lower than any other quotes), they are dependable, loyal, and ethical. I have had Hoyt Masonry waterproof my basement, put gorgeous backyard pavers down in my backyard, had my cobble stone driveway secured with concrete and my front brick steps fixed. Avoid. I was under time constraints to resolve water leaks through my center chimney before having my roof re-done. While other masons were booking out 2-3 months, Mr Hoyt was available (red flag!), so I hired him. My experience mirrors the complaints registered against him with the Better Business Bureau: prompt, friendly, apparently knowledgeable, communicative right up until he is fully paid. Then a no-show for followup work when the problems persist. I was taken. Don't be. If you need more details: - Mr Hoyt showed up promptly several days after calling him, early in AM. Very friendly. - Mr Hoyt saw the leaking in the attic as his appointment was in the midst of a prolonged rain storm. He was willing and did climb onto the roof to inspect the chimney. - Got his word that his solution of coating the chimney crown and waterproofing the entire chimney would resolve the leaks - He was available to make the repairs a few days later. - I hired him for $1600. - He returned, with my permission, while I was on vacation, to make the repairs. According to my video doorbell recordings, he was on sight (drive-in to drive-out) for a grand total of 1hr 16min. - Got 30 minutes of his son's time several days later to waterproof chimney in the attic. - Do the math. Fair deal? - A week later, we had a heavy, prolonged rain storm. His repairs did not pass the test. While one area of leaking was better, there was still heavy leaking in all 6 buckets on all four sides of the chimney. - Tried repeatedly to get him to return to examine and make further repairs. I assumed he would honor his word and his work. Don't assume. - After repeated delays and excuses (same scenarios as in the BBB complaints against him), we finally agreed to what I thought was a firm, committed date/time for him to return. - Never showed up. Got no response to several phone calls and no replies to several texts that I sent him that day. - No response at all since. - Had to hire a second masonry company. Took more time (and more money), but it was well worth it. What a difference! It took 3 months, but after 24 man-hours of masonry repair and cap installation over two days, my water leaks are finally solved. Well worth the wait. - Save yourself a step. Go with someone else to begin with, even if it means waiting several months. read more

In September I wrote a review that mentioned that after a year the work had not been completed, nor was our deposit returned after several requests. Since then Hoyt Masonry has returned our money for which we are very appreciative. Again, Hoyt Masonry has done great work for others as evidenced by pictures and comments from others. read more

I'm sorry to see that others have not had a good experience with Hoyt Masonry. In our case, we needed our existing concrete front steps veneered and had a light column built. I was hesitant given some of the reviews I read, but Sean Hoyt was available so we took a chance. We are so happy we did. We couldn't be happier with his work. Everything is just beautiful, and he completed it well within our timeframe, and at a great price too. Total scam artist!!! The owner comes across super nice and willing to help. The estimation of job completion is fairly quick, which makes you feel like the work to be done will not be too much of a disruption. He builds your confidence in him so you feel comfortable on giving him a deposit to help cover the cost of materials so the job can be done in a timely manner. Once you've paid your deposit, the job gets rescheduled due to unforeseen complications. At six months, we requested our deposit back. He is readily willing to cut you a check, but then it gets lost in the mail, or he wasn't home, or on a roof and will call you later. The excuses fly as he appeases your requests over and over again with false reassurances. We were given his name as a referral and boy does our friend feel awful! I looked this company up on the Better Business Bureau to find is accreditation has been revoked, had 7 complaints brought against him, 4 in 2018 and 3 of which are still unresolved in over a year. He also has a complaint of money needing to be reimbursed through the NH Department of Justice Consumer Complaint department, which goes back to 2007. His website says "Hoyt Masonry LLC", however the company is not licensed in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. He also shows having a high review rate on another review site... perhaps some of the deposit money we give him is going to pay others to write good reviews! Do not under any circumstances choose this company. He took payment July 2018 and the job still hasn't been started. Message after message went unanswered. Finally said he would arrive Monday June 24, 2019 between 7-730. Called that morning and said he was waiting for his son and would call when they were on their way. They never arrived. Called Monday night and told him to send my deposit back and he said he would send it out that night, still waiting. Hoping I won't have to go to small claims to get that deposit back. read more
