A couple years ago we were looking to remodel our kitchen and asked several friends, who had recently done the same, for a recommendation. Sadly, each of them said "you don't wanna use my guy." How sad that no one liked their contractor after the job was done! Luckily, a friend finally recommended Frank, and we couldn't be happier. Our kitchen/dining remodel was a really big job--walls removed, ceiling and flooring replaced, top to bottom--and he did beautiful work. Frank is conscientious and thorough, and will treat your home like his own. He makes suggestions and sees little details we missed, is a hard worker, and doesn't keep adding to the price. And he's just a genuinely nice guy. Our house is quirky and kind of piece-meal, and there are literally weird things behind every wall. Whatever came up, he would just look at it and figure out how to fix it or make it better. Since then, he's pretty much remodeled our entire home, one room at a time. We're mid-bathroom right now. He can do just about everything, and we would trust him with anything.

It was extremely well built and is perfect. He used small mitsubishi room heating/AC units that have been flawless. We have had zero issues with it. He used higher grade materials, so it was really a fully custom job with a very competitive cost. One of the issues I have had with EVERY cotractor I have ever worked with is having them show up and work when they say they will. This was NEVER a problem with them and they completed the project in a timely manner. I wish they would move back to NorCal so I could use them in other projects I have.

I was extremely happy working with Danny. 1) He is very responsive and communicative. 2) He is very reliable - shows up when he says he will, gets the job done. 3) He is patient - it was hard for me to choose color and cabinet handles. 4) He is knowledgeable - he provided guidance since I wasn't there and I appreciated his insight given his experience. 5) He's thorough & detail-oriented and 6) He clearly takes pride in a job well done. He even came back after completing the paint job to put in the kitchen cabinet handles since I didn't order them in time. 7) He's reasonably priced from my perspective. 8) He did a great job with the painting - our tenant is very observant and she was happy with the paint job. I would definitely recommend him if you need painting done.

Thomas Sommer is a great contractor and a genuinely fantastic human being…read more My parents spent a large portion of their savings to purchase a home in San Diego to be closer to family. Soon after they moved to their new home which was built only 3 years before they purchased it, it became clear there was a signings that construction defect on the second floor with a large leak into the ceiling which was due to incorrect installation of a sliding door. This was a known defect which had not been transparently disclosed by the prior owner. We attempted to contact the contractor who had built the home without success. After months of meeting with other contractors to get this door replaced and reinstalled, we found Sommer Construction. Thomas met with us and was incredibly empathetic - he insisted that rather than repair it himself - he would help us contact the home builder and facilitate the repair being done under warranty. When we first heard this idea, we didn't really want to go down this path because we didn't think there was any way this could work. Given the long ordeal, we simply wanted to pay for it and have it repaired without the hassle of arguing and fighting with someone (especially given that Covid was ongoing). After speaking to Tom and considering how expensive the repair was going to be, we thought why not give it a chance. Tom was convinced that this repair should be repaired under warranty by the person who built the home. It seemed to good to be true that someone would go through all of this hassle and go out of their way to help us get this done. This just speaks to the kind of person Thomas is, he tracked down the original builder and held him responsible for the repair. He then guided us through the negotiations and repairs with the original contractor - taking time out of his busy schedule all because he is a genuinely good and empathetic human being. It is so refreshing to meet someone like this and we cannot express how grateful we are to Thomas Sommer. He gives contractors a good name. If you read the other reviews you will quickly see that this is just the way that Thomas is and how he runs his company. The more we got to know Thomas we found that he is simply a man of principle first and foremost. If we ever need any project done, he is the first person we would call for sure! Cannot recommend him highly enough.

Sadly, I'm updating my review and it isn't good…read more The grout on the kitchen floor is coming out all over at a year and nine months. There's only one person in the house and with the pandemic, nobody else has been here. There isn't much traffic in that room. I contacted Thomas on 1/11/21. I asked about a warranty and explained about the grout and that the floor was creaking. He was a bit defensive - he'd done the job right - but said to call him back in a week and we'd look into it. I called again on 1/20/21 as requested; no response. I called again 1/28; no response. Ghosting your clients when there is an issue with your work is really problematic. Even if the warranty is over, it's best to find out what has happened. For this, I'm going to hire someone else to regrout and I think the problem should be solved - I've since realized the creaking is coming only where the tiles are missing grout so it should be an easy fix. That said, you should think twice about using Sommer Construction; what if the situation is bigger? And, if it is, you can always claim against his Contractors bond with the State of CA to get resolution if he ghosts you.

We found this company through Holland Custom Cabinets and our experience with H & W Custom Builders…read morewas exceptional. Holland designed and built cabinets for our kitchen remodel and H & W demolished the old kitchen and installed the new kitchen. Chuck was very professional, always communicated clearly, and asked questions when decisions needed to be made. Chuck and his team worked extremely well with City officials, subcontractors, the building manager (hi-rise condo), and especially the owners (me and my husband). The site was always clean at the end of the day and exceptionally clean and working perfectly at the end of construction. We could not have made a better choice for the installation of our Coronado vacation home. I would highly recommend H & W Custom Builders for your project.

I called Covered In Concrete and left a message with regard to a cracked concrete kitchen sink…read moreneeding to be removed and replaced, without hindering the concrete countertop it was attached to. Tony promptly called back and let me know that he'd drop by to see if he could be of help. He was knowledgeable and honest with how the project could lead in the best or, worst case scenario. The worst case scenario was that a new concrete counter would need to be considered in addition to a new sink if the counter was to crack. Once a date was set to start, all went better than anticipated! Because of some additional house work being done by a different work crew on the same day, there were multiple workers and equipment through the house but this didn't interfere with Tony's professional and focused work ethic. Tony's skillset and know-how with concrete showed clearly and we couldn't be more grateful for the BEST OUTCOME - thank you!

Initial conversations with Andrew were promising and pleasant. He sounded like he knew what and how…read moreneeded to be done. He knew about all challenges of the project and was ready to address them all (us living in the house during remodeling was one of them). Unfortunately, working with Andrew was a very stressful and unpleasant experience. He doesn't know how to treat customers, gets very offensive, rude. His workers are unprofessional, lazy, and have to be supervised by the customer at all times, otherwise work needs to be redone or fixed. Andrew was not on the project regularly and sometimes it took 3-4 days before he came to the house to check on the progress. As a result the project was stretched for an unnecessary few more weeks. One of Andrew's responses about poor scheduling jobs: some weeks the workers worked 2 days, some 1.5 day/week, he said: "I'm a freelancer, and don't have any commitment to have 8 hours daily on your project". He didn't care that his workers didn't clean after the day of work, and left us for days (weekends included) in the middle of an unnecessary mess. We were very concerned about quality of the floor installation and he was trying to convince us that it's standard and the floor will " settle" in a couple of weeks, When almost all the floor was installed ( a small area in the living room was left to finish) and we asked him the check the quality of the installation before installing the floorboard, Andrew announced to us the he is stopping the project (after 6 weeks of work) and will send us a new quote to redo the floor! There was no way we would spend more time and money and have him and his workers to do that. Just because we were exhausted physically and mentally by Andrew, we asked him to finish the project. We have a "jumping" floor all over the house which will be a bad reminder of this contractor. Don't wish this on anyone! Stay away from hiring Andrew and Ucon Design and Remodeling.
