I was invited to this show by my brother and his girlfriend who rescue stray cats and help them get…read moreadopted. As a cat-lady-in-training myself, we were surprised that we had no idea that this event existed even though this is their 61st year. Tickets were relatively inexpensive ($9.50 for adults) and it is held in the GRB. Though it is a smaller event than other events held in the GRB like Comicpalooza, I was impressed by the ample size and attendance. I parked at the meters in Discovery Green and only paid for an hour-and-a-half, but I had to run out and pay for an extra hour because we ended up staying longer than I thought. There are plenty of vendors in attendance, as well as booths by local animal shelters with kitties for adoption and informational booths by the veterinary schools (like A&M's) in Texas. I bought a couple of new toys for my kitty that were recommended to me by one of the vendors -- I tested them out on the kittens on display and they work! Haha The real stars of this show, of course, are the cats that are up for competition. Since I'm an amateur, I wasn't exactly sure what the rules were or how the competition works, but from what I can tell you enter your cat into a category based on its breed and age. There were several partitioned areas where a judge will examine each cat competing in a specific category, with spectators watching and applauding as the judge interacted with the cat and the audience to explain what they're looking for in a winner. Afterwards, there's an "Agility Contest" where the owners try to get their cats to run an obstacle course (by having them chase a toy) that is pretty hilarious -- because cats. It was also fun interacting with the various owners and watching them groom their cats. A rule of thumb though, is never to pet a cat unless the owner gives you permission, because you'll either mess up their grooming or you might transfer diseases from cat to cat. This event is definitely like heaven for cat lovers, and I'll definitely be back next year with my posse of cat ladies.

New location for Riot! Right next to Julep, which is another favorite of ours…read more This location used to be a gym, and more recently a bar, so people might think this spot is cursed - but I am hopeful Riot will change that pattern. The cool thing about the location is they have their own coffee shop and bar and a few sitting areas so you can hang out before the show. The coffee shop also offer pastries and is open from 7 am! As far as the comedy part itself, we've been to a Monday open mic night - which I didn't expect to be great but we wanted to do something a little different for date night. The employees are nice and they even warned us that the talent might not be the best, but we still had a good time. The stage is nice and well lit and the seating areas all have good views of the stage. Overall I think its a nice addition to the neighborhood - something to do other than eating and drinking. Hopefully they bring in some good acts pretty soon!

This new location has some parking, street parking, valet (shared w Julep?)... there's a bar and bar seating (wish the lighting was a bit dimmer and more comedy club vibes), but enter through the dark curtains and they have a nice setup! Seating, great sound and lighting, a Htown mural, and QR codes at each table to order drinks and bites.

Since then I've gone on to see The ripple, the wave that carried me home, and the latest show, The Lehman Trilogy. Each show Ive watched here has been wonderfully well crafted in storytelling, acting, and have been very immersive to the audience. You can definitely feel the love that was put into each production. I've been enjoying going to opening preview night of each of these shows, there's something really different about seeing the first live performance for each production. Seeing the directors and producers all watching their hard work come to life, the roaring standing ovation. It's a great place to be at! I fully recommend people to check out their productions as they're never a disappointment to me!

I had great seats right in center, but really the venue is so intimate there is not a bad seat in the house. The play Plumshuga: The Rise of Lauren Anderson. I believe this was the last performance of the show. Shes a Houston icon. It was a story of her life, told thru Houston Ballet dancers and other amazing actors. It was authentic, and showed a black woman's plight of becoming one of the best dancers in the US, her perilious journey through addiction, and her life now. It was centered and focused on her voice, and it was beautiful story that should be heard by many Americans, not just the black community. Bravo Lauren Anderson!

I am always so fascinated how they can move the furniture so fast behind scenes. I think the theatre itself is really nice. A bit narrow though and everytime I go I am fearful of falling in someone haha. the ceiling has a beautiful star light. Not too big of a theatre or stage so it feels like a much more intimate experience. The valet service parking is always so convenient but it does get full pretty quickly !

The show was beautiful and the songs were great. Everything was so clean and I loved that they had an attendant in the restrooms to let everyone know where the open stalls were. The light went so fast and we had plenty of time to get a new drink and chat a bit during intermission. We grabbed a couple pamphlets with the upcoming musicals. We are looking forward to bringing the kids to see a few. I'm a little disappointed in the attendants though. Back when I was a kid it was customary to dress up to attend the theater. I saw many people in shorts, sneakers, and baseball caps. ‍ I did however see several dressed up and tried to match the theme and I loved that.
