They were not the cheapest bid for a 6'6 wooden privacy fence, but they also weren't the most expensive. What made me choose them was their long history in Houston. I wanted someone with some experience. The quote process went smoothly. My contact (Roman) understood what I wanted in a fence, and had several pictures to show me a representation of what would be installed. He had to come out twice, as I changed the scope of construction after the first quote. The fence is very well constructed. There's no wobble or lean, and the yard has a very pleasant cedar smell now. My one complaint is that the gate they constructed seemed a bit rough in comparison to the quality of the fence. The locking mechanism is secure, and the gate is level and swings freely. However, the wood was very rough and unfinished, and there's a "block" instead of an actual handle for pulling the gate closed. A minor inconvenience, considering the cost. read more

Houston Fence did a great job of installing a wooden fence at a guest house I own in Bellaire, so I immediately called them when Beryl partially blew over a wooden fence at my adjacent residence. While they were replacing the wooden fence, I had them replace an old wooden fence between my 2 houses with a galvanized steel fence. Both fences were installed professionally with quality materials and look great. They won't be your cheapest bid but they will definitely install a better fence than the cheaper guys! read more

I was going to write this review but decided to write it after I had cooled off and calmed down. I could not recommend Houston Fence Company. I had bent panels, uneven/staggered fence height. They did fix one problem, but now i have rusty metal. The icing on the cake was when my gate lock quit working. The magnetic lock has a lifetime warranty. I was quoted an new install price as if I was a new customer, to include the cost of the replacement magnetic lock. Houston Fence does not stand behind its warranty service or equipment. read more

There were no change orders on the project so the price agreed upon was the price we paid. We asked for proposals from 6 fence companies and interviewed 3. I had a contract with Houston Fence, but they complained I had too many bushes near the fence. I cut back and they still were not satisfied and threatened the fence installers would charge me hundreds of dollars more to install the fence. I asked another fence company if they saw a problem with my yard and they did not. I asked Houston Fence why this was a problem ongoing and they told me they use sub contractors who tell them what they will and won't do. I cancelled my contract with Houston Fence. I think they were just trying to gouge more money from me. Plus they don't use their own employees, but contract workers who actually run the show. Not a place I recommend. read more

We had Houston Fence replace fence around our urban lot. 3 years later their 1x 4 horizontal boards are splitting. They used cedar pickets with tons of knot holes that will pop out sooner than better quality pickets. They mixed their concrete for the metal poles super wet so it spread into my flower beds and prevents me from planting where I would like. read more

We recently had Houston Fence replace the fence at our home. (This was after I had contacted Texas Fence and the sales person sent a bid to us without even coming to see our property in person!) Philip Strohbehn (sales) contacted us promptly when I made an inquiry. He came onsite to measure and discuss what we wanted to do. We decided on a board-on-board fence with a cap. Once we finalized the contract, Philip kept us apprised on the lead time for the installation which was about two weeks. Leading up to that date, he kept in touch with me about the exact day the crew would start work so I could let our neighbors know. He came out the first day with the crew and also at the end of the installation which took about 2.5 days. The crew was amazingly efficient and professional and cleaned up everything as they went. After the installation, I contacted Philip about one area of the fence that needed some replacement boards and he assured me that this would be taken care of within 1-2 weeks. He told me that customer satisfaction was important to him and the company. I've been sitting on this review for a year and a half to make sure I wasnt letting my anger get the best of an honest review. Even though they've been in business for a long time, Houston Fence Company acted like amateurs on our $6000 residential job (driveway gate build and install). They sent a salesperson, who over-promised and under-delivered. In short: I missed work when people didn't arrive on time, and there was a lot of time wasted going back and forth over alterations they wanted to make to the contract. I am disappointed with what I got, and disgusted with the experience. The salesperson seemed genuine and knowledgeable while presenting in our home, enough so that we signed a contract on the spot. First impression was great. The first problem arose when our metal frame was delivered to our home and they realized they built it too wide to fit the opening of our existing fence. They asked if they could cut the end of our fence off to accommodate. Not a big deal. It all matches, so sure. They sank a 4x4" post in the ground with cement. They took off for a day or so to let the cement set. Two men returned and started adding the 6" wide wood panels to cover the metal gate frame, starting simultaneously from both sides. When they got to the center, there was a gap of about four inches, so another panel wouldn't fit. Supervisor on site asked if that was okay. Uhm, no. Its a PRIVACY fence. There's nothing private about a big gap. They cut some boards off-site and later returned and filled the gap. Looks awkward, but at least its private. They attempted to hang the gate on the newly-sunken post, which was apparently not heavy-duty enough. They had to rip up the 4x4" post and cement and place a 6x6" post into new cement. Another day for cement to set ... At some point the next day, they arrived and hung the gate up. In doing so, they left a four inch gap between the gate and the post on which it hangs. Houston Fence Company promised that someone would come out and fill the gap with a board, but no one ever did. The next day, the motor-installers arrived. Before leaving them alone to work, I reiterated to the supervisor on site a few things. We needed that gap filled, and the supervisor said he would weld something to fix it. Also, I made sure he was aware that our contract specified that the gate would open outward toward the street and the motor would be placed behind the gate (hidden from the street) on a separate cement slab. We actually paid extra for this feature. He disagreed, saying the motor listed in our contract wouldn't work for that situation, and that he would have to go get a different motor (smaller horsepower, fewer years warranty, cheaper). After discussion with Houston Fence Company, they assured us this would best meet our needs and they would back the warranty for the full term of the original motor. (Sounds shady though.) They installed a motor and keypad. We asked Houston Fence Company to let us know how much we owe them, since there were so many changes to their plan and it no longer matched our contract. They obviously didn't install a cement slab (itemized as $260) per our contract, nor did they use the same motor. The motor substituted was about $1000 cheaper. They told us they would subtract $380 from the total. This is way less than the expected $1260. Over the course of a week when we were having our gate install, we were constantly bombarded with alterations to our contract. At the end, we got a lower-end motor than planned, a four-inch gap in our privacy gate, missed work, annoyance from regularly arguing about what they agreed to do, and only a slight monetary rebate (partial return of cost difference between contract and actual work done). Phillip S was the sales person. Responsive when he sold the job. Unresponsive thereafter. Water line was broken by the installers. Because of this issue my bill rose to 300.00. The usual bill is 40.00. For 4 weeks straight I contacted Philip via text, phone email with zero response. I've called the company, spoke to Sylvia last week. She assured me Renaldp would call me when he returned from lunch on Tuesday Oct 3rd. Zero response. I guess he's still at lunch. Gate latch no longer works and is falling off. I'm so disappointed in the service of this organization and yet they have the audacity to post a sign advertising on the fence to get free advertising, on a busy street I might add. So now I'm out of an additional 300.00 because of Houston Fence Co and I feel incredibly disrespected because I can't get a return phone call. I feel incredibly disrespected. Hiring them once was my mistake. Hiring them the second time makes me a fool. Calling them a third makes me an idiot. Their design was faulty, costs were high, promptness was poor, and responsiveness poor. After my teams having led tens of millions in construction over my career, I am embarrassed to have chosen this company. In building four iron gates, the last two had zero clearance. So the field installer had to grind off metal for the two gates to close. Of course over time, it was problematic as the posts closed in tighter, making to difficult to use and close the gates. Also, when originally asking for black hardware, the supervisor even called me from Home Depot saying he could not find them anywhere in town or online. After a number of tries, I gave up on him. Then I ordered the black hardware from Home Depot at my own cost, to have an excellent locksmith install at my own costs. Also, I asked for all four gates to have the same key. After several tires, I again gave up to have them leave with two different key sets. That is what they have in stock and obviously did not want to install per my request. Again, I had another locksmith fix the problem at my own cost. Also, on the second set of gates, it took several months to constantly call them to complete the job. Also... finally, I called them two weeks ago to make the redesign. I even asked them to just give me a welder and some steel tubing for someone to work after hours. They declined. They then informed me that the order needs to be at least $1,000. They said someone would get back to me within five business days. Never a peep from them. Today, the design had to be corrected by an excellent contractor in town that modified the design, re-adjusted the gate fit, and repaint. It was NOT Houston Fence making this fix and correction. Either this is truly a bad contractor or they really do not want to do residential work. Run away fast. read more

Gate started to sag after three years or so - which happens. I contacted support, they said $299 (that's not a typo) for the service call, plus an hourly rate on top of that. Tech shows up, works for ten minutes adjusting the hinges, but the gate is still not closing properly. I ask him what else he can do, he says he can reset the post, that will be an additional $850, separate charge. Bills me the full $299, that's an hourly rate of $1800!!! Too many other gate companies in Houston to put up with gouging like this. Word of advice, install a wheel on your gate to support it, it will save you money down the road. read more

My access gate stopped working and I had someone from HF come out to determine the problem. The issue was a lever in the panel that was not set properly when the new panel was installed 14 months ago. The employee reset the lever so that the gate operated properly- it took all of 10 minutes. HF called me yesterday to tell me that I owed them $299.00 for the work- that this is their SERVICE CALL FEE! I was never told about this fee and if I had been, would certainly have looked elsewhere for help. I spoke with the manager who was understanding and kind enough to waive the fee, but explained to me that if I have a need for future service, this is their minimum one hour service call fee. In all my years, I have NEVER paid a service fee this high for any company or any service. read more

We used Houston Fence over 21 years ago when we moved into our house. recently, we noticed it needed to be replaced. We decide to get 3 bids. Of all of the salespeople we met with, I was most impressed with Philip Strohbehn with Houston Fence. He educated me quite a bit about the wood we should use. Also, he was the only one that said that since we were building an 8' tall fence, that the posts needed to be 6 feet apart. In addition, he was very patient in terms of waiting for me to make a decision. Another top rated company raised the price on their bid without telling me because of circumstances that prevented me from making a quick decision. All along the way, any time I had questions, Philip responded quickly to texts, phone calls, and emails. The installers were very professional, wanted us to be pleased, and took pride in their work. After the fence was installed, Philip setup an appointment to walk the fence with me. We found some boards that needed to replaced. He came back with one of the installers and all issues were taken care of. Philip never mentioned paying the balance. There was no pressure, which I appreciated. This told me that Houston Fence wanted me to be completely satisfied, which I was. I almost went with a different company that was highly rated, but less expensive. So glad I did. I know, because my neighbor used this other company, that there was no follow up like I received. She even commented that the installers at Houston Fence were more professional. read more

Asked for a quote to move my neighbor's fence off of my property. The fence is around 93ft of deep, needs to be relocated back to their boundary line which is 6ft away. I have 2 quotes which both came in around $800 from 2 other fence companies. The rep from HFC, sent me a quote for $2000. I could replace it for $2000. Instead of wasting my time, I suggested to the rep that he should just explain that they are too busy to take on a small job. He had to have the last word and tell me he is Mr. Salesmen of the year! Terrible service! I would not recommend them. I got a contract and was told 3 weeks out. I called at 3 weeks as i had not heard a word. No one even knew about my contract and I wasn't on the schedule. And the gates we had discussed building we now an issue - after the fact! Got on the schedule and the crew arrived 2 hours late and started an hour after that due to the many questions they were asking etc about issues that had already been covered with others but not communicated to the crew. Due to the delay in arriving and starting work had to come back another day and charged us for the additional day! Ridiculous. No one knows who is uncharge over there or what is going on. Would not recommend Houston Fence Co to anyone. Chose this company for their long history servicing the Houston area. Signed a contract with this company in April to put up iron electric gate. Job was not completed till almost the end of September due to subcontractors not using cement the first time they came out. This companies employees never seemed to know what they were doing. Yes they did. They were subcontractors hired by Houston Fence Co who tried to cut cost. When there was a problem that needed to be fixed it would take them a week or two to get back and fix problem which did not happen (6 mos for a 2 to 3 week job). Horrible Sales Person (Roman) I asked for Capped Fence, I asked for strong Spring closures on Gates, and I asked for Posts to be buried at 3' not 2'. THESE WERE POINTED REQUESTS! Expected 1ft Rot Board since other new HF Fence across the street had same. I got a 6" instead, never saw one that small before. Lesson learned was he wrote contract up his way and I signed having not noted he did not follow my strong requests. (I even walked him up to a fence (despite my medical disabilities) so he could see the capped fence that I admired.) Roman even pointed out that HF did a better quality capping than what we were looking at. How could he miss????? So I tell you read the contract before signing. These were highlighted points I made to Roman. I got none of these items at the end of install. Posts were set and poured during heavy all day rain so I expect issues in the future when summer heat drys the ground out and with that and rain and post setting left a horrible clay & mud mess through out my property that installers left for me & my neighbors to deal with. Office lady (Sheila?) was a pain too. I am post transplant 2 months at the time I called HF and she insisted I needed to walk and measure old fence line for HF to get an estimate even after I explained I was 100% disabled. ADA would love to get their hands on that conversation. I am not allowed near dirt, Plants, flowers so on.. PS She will not allow you to talk, once she starts gabbing, you have to bark at her to wedge a word in! Very Rude! + On the positive side Joe with HF arrived to follow up on my complaints and fixed the gates, cleaned up the mud and repaired or replaced the many mistakes the fence crew left and Joe had genuine concern for HF reputation and for my customer satisfaction. That is why I added a star to above. Thanks Joe for taking me from unhappy to at least I can live with with this. + BIG POSITIVE They use a co. called DUNN to stain the fence and these two guys (Father & Son) are great! Excellent quality of work and work ethics. Great Customer Service Skills. I have had many compliments on my Deck Stain and Fence stain. I do suggest you take two days off to the island when they apply stain however. Fumes are a bit much. Our neighbor hired this company to replace her fence. The connecting fence between her yard and ours was one that was replaced. From a distance the fence looked nice, but our dog kept getting out and we could not figure out how. Upon closer inspection, we found that they had not tied our fence into the new one. The left it loose and leaning against an old post. The bottom could be pushed open about 3 feet and was only being held on at the top by being nailed into a chunk of scrap wood that was nailed to the top of the old post. Even worse than that, there were 10 long exposed nails just sticking out. We have a young child that could have been injured and our dog was injured on them getting out of the back. We called almost 2 weeks ago to have it fixed and they have yet to come out to fix something that they did wrong. We did not pay the amount of money we did for them to create a danger for our child and dog in the backyard. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. Poor workmanship, high prices, and office staff who do not seem to give a crap. read more
