I love the crusty old owners, love the fact that it was a brothel, and love the oddly steep feeling of vertigo I get in Jerome.

They preserved some of the original details of the building. When we walked in the store clerk greeted us, and shared information about the store and the kaleidoscopes. It is named after Nellie Bly a journalist who traveled around the world in 72 day. The store is the largest kaleidoscope dealer in the world. The clerk pointed out some of her favorites and shared how best to experience the reflections and changing patterns. The intricacy and colors were indescribable. Attached to it is Around the World With Nellie Bly, a store with a variety of items of art and collectibles. You can spend as much time as you want looking into each kaleidoscope and learning about the pieces.

This place is ridiculously magical. It's like someone captured sunsets, opals, stained glass, and interdimensional portals and said, "Yes, put it in a tube and make it spin." I came in for a quick peek and promptly lost all concept of time. One second it's "I'll just look around," and the next you're in a trance whispering, "OH MY GOD" into a kaleidoscope like it's giving you life advice. The staff are the real MVPs: genuinely fun, friendly, and obsessed (in the best way) with what they do. They LOVE sharing their passion, showing you different designs, explaining how they're made, and basically turning your casual browsing into a full-blown kaleidoscope awakening. I did not know I needed so many kaleidoscopes. Turns out I needed... many. And then they casually mention they offer classes. CLASSES. I am now emotionally invested and fully prepared to fly back to Jerome just to take one, because apparently this is who I am now. 10/10. Go. Bring curiosity. Leave with joy (and potentially an unreasonable number of kaleidoscopes).

I've been to Jerome and to this very store several times in the past couple of years but finally the stars aligned just right and I schedule a haircut by the in-house barber (and gentleman) Frankie. Some might call it a weird bucket list item to get a haircut in a record store located in a former mining town on the side of a mountain, but for whatever reason I had been eager to see what an experience it would be. I had made casual talk with Frankie several times in passing before during previous drop-ins, but never had the privilege of getting the 'do done until yesterday. Let me profess, I'm usually the Great Clips sort of guy because honestly I have little need to impress anyone as a WFH employee with a quiet home and family life, but on this occasion I wanted to look good and feel good. Did I ever come to the right place! Frankie spent a great deal of time making sure I had a perfect cut and style for my noggin' and we had a great conversation, getting to know one another. He pored over every detail and delivered the absolute best hair cut I've ever had. Frankie spent time showing me how to style my freshly-shorn pate with a little product and a simple twirl of a brush. I walked out feeling like a sir! I can't explain how much better I felt after this simple and seemingly mundane service, but it's absolutely true a good cut will make you feel tenfold better when it's done properly. I commend Frankie and his skills and exuberantly give five stars and a hearty recommendation for his services. Make yourself feel good and book an appointment with him without hesitation!

The hours are odd because they open and close the museum- they being one man. So this shop is contingent on his availability. I love copper- so I was happy to poke around this store and lap it a few times before I settled on what I wanted. I picked out a bracelet hand etched by an artist of the Hopi tribe, a copper splash artist how I had already admired the artwork in other shops- I picked up a heart shaped piece of copper & a copper electroplated redwood leaf- needle bundle! The electroplated leaves- I wanted all of them! They are real leaves, 3 different kinds, all copper electroplated and gorgeous! But- at $30 a piece, one was what I got. I spent a decent amount in this shop and wanted to spend more. The owner was very knowledgeable and helpful! He also creates copper jewelry and I loved his pieces too!
