Extremely smart move on my part, because it's nothing better than stopping to get a sweet treat on a super hot day! Located in Upper Marlboro, near the courthouse, stands a storefront for Houey's Shaved Ice. They have a gigantic menu with a large variety of flavors . Bahama Mama, Grape, Watermelon, Pink Bubblegum, Mango, Blue Raspberry, just to name a few. They also have a plethora of toppings, marshmallow, sour spray, gum balls and so much more. I opted for the rainbow, which is three flavors of your choice. I ordered a large tropical punch, sweet cherry and lime. DELICIOUS! The ice is fluffy and flavorful and even though I was inhaling it (hence the reason why I didn't take pictures), I didn't get brain freeze, which is a major plus! The prices are all very reasonable and the portions are perfect. There are 2 picnic tables, but other than that, you're on your own finding a location to eat. Stopped by on the way back from a local hike. Tried the cotton candy flavor with nerds and it was refreshing! Flavor choices were so broad it was hard to choose pick. And then curiosity got the best of me and had to try the dill pickle flavor. It was actually pretty good, I would have preferred it less sweet tho. Got Houeys 8-8-25 on a respectable nice day not too deathly hot but tolerable outside. My LOOOVE has lost his parents and not feeling well days apart so he needed some Air!. He got black cherry and pineapple with marshmallow topping!. The day was still light not much foot traffic but service wasn't slow at all . I got cherry with pineapple it's like houeys NEVER misses on flavors or combinations you taste EVERY bit of sweetness and ice it's wonderful !!. I recommend them hella times over worth it indeed!!!.. the 3 flavors LOOOVE got wasn't bad as I thought because marshmallows go with s'mores or sweet potatoes not shaved ice! I'm probably the pickiest person when it comes to dessert! I loveee ice cream but am really iffy when it comes to shaved ice. This was my first time here and I was expecting that thick crushed ice. A nice cool sweet treat is always needed, especially during the summer. Having shaved ice in the area that is different from a milkshake or something at a fast food restaurant is awesome. I usually get Tiger's Blood as my flavor but I love the variety they have. The service is always smooth but on those hot days the line can get pretty long. This place has plenty of flavors to choose from, the prices around Rita's prices but the service is like waited to be seated at at restaurant.. completely too slow!!! It's takes entirely too long for the ice to be made. I've never seen a place where there is a waiting line of 10+ people waiting for their order number to be called every time you go. no matter how small your order is, it's as if they go to Antarctica to get the ice and leave you standing around for way too long. It's as if they can only produce 1 cup of ice per 10 minutes. The line piles up so fast. No matter what time you go. Like you are waiting on a 10 piece order of fried chicken smh. I would give grace but this has been the problem with houeys since they first opened years ago, nothing has changed or improved at ALL. They need to remove some of the options off the menu if it causes crazy wait for other customers. Or hire some of these kids in the area to help. The slow service takes away from the experience. McDonald's & 7/11 are right in the area better off getting a McFlurry or slurpee. No shade. read more

Found this gem while visiting with a friend in Upper Marlboro on a recent, hot summer day. While I had no motivation to be outside or do anything productive, I was up to grabbing some shaved ice. Boy am I glad I did! There are a couple of benches outside to sit but also the park is very close and we ate there. I had a mix of blue raspberry and strawberry (delicious). I am ashamed to admit that this is my first time coming this neighborhood gem when it's a mere 3 miles from my home and it opened last summer. One reason is that it's not always open, second is that in passing you have to look hard to see the "OPEN" light from the road unless a line is formed outside. Driving pass as usual but this time with my 12 & 10 year old niece and nephew both begging me to stop for treat...... I am SO glad we did!! I literally did a U-turn when I saw that Light! Surprisingly there was no line but I guess that's all it takes is to see a few people standing and they will come! By the time we ordered 3 more cars pulled up with 8 people! We ordered 3 Monster size which is a monstrous portion for only $5. It has to be at least 18ounces of lusciousness. We ordered 1 Egg custard with marshmallow, 1 Rainbow which includes 3 flavors of your choice nephew picked pineapple, grape, & dreamsicle, and I went with mango & candy apple. As the great Auntie that I am and the only one with money it was mandatory that I sample the other 2, just to make sure they were edible!lol Man or man, I can't decide which flavor I loved more! Each spoonful was a taste of sweet fluffy, light fresh snow... Being from Baltimore I was very excited to learn of this black owned stand right near my new home in Upper Marlboro. Baltimore loves their snowball stands and I quickly learned that everywhere doesn't have them lol. Egg Custard with marshmallow is the ONLY way I can eat a snowball so I order a shaved ice the same exact way It was good, the shaved ice isn't the style of ice we use in Baltimore but it's a solid stand in for now. A friend of mine just recently put me on to this gem and ive made it my business to stop pass whenever I get the chance! Most people dont get excited about shaved ice but im a sucker for a sweet treat so Houeys definitely has my stamp of approval. In comparison to its competitor Rita's the portion size and price point gets a 5/5. As far as options for creativity as far as what u can order, Rita takes the win for that. But if it aint broke dont fix it and sometimes less is more and a simple flavored ice will do!(they do have simple add ons like nerds and gummies) And flavor is what youll get each flavor taste exactly like what it is and for them to be making them the old fashion way your not getting a cup of ice with a spritz of syrup flavor. And the ice is smooth, melts nicely! Customer service is fair seeing as though its not much to the order process and line moves at a decent rate during hot busy days. Only downside for me would be the location while convenient for me. I think I love quite a lot of things about this place. The shaved Ice were MASSIVE and they had a gambit of options. I ultimately got a wild cherry and an egg custard for Me, Myself, and I. I am so delighted to have found this place. I drive one hour (round trip) to get my snow ball (as we call it in the Deep South) and it is well worth it! I'm just mad I only discovered Houey's a few weeks ago and I've been in this area for over two years! In the DMV, these are the closest I have found to New Orleans-style and they are perfect! The only negative is there is no shade when the sun is beaming and with long lines, it can be a bit uncomfortable; but I do still think it's worth it! :D Also, this is the only place I've gone to and they actually have cream when you ask for it. Big parking lot for parking, line was long but moved fast- 1 side you order, other side you pick up. They give you a number on your receipt. Not expensive at all, multiple flavors, add ons, combinations and more. Pay with exact change only or credit card. I didn't like the mango not strong enough, but the bahama mama was amazing. I was pleasantly suprised at how good this was. They have plenty of variety in flavors and nice cup sizes. Piña Colada, Pineapple, and Tamarind were good all the way to the bottom of the cup. Big win. It won't be long before this place has a line around the corner, so get it while you can! Tons of flavors and toppings to to choose from that you can sample before you buy, as well as the option to mix more than one in your order! I got egg custard with cream..mmmmm (not pictured) but definitely had my eye on that Wedding Cake. My guy got Bahama mama/pineapple with cream, and two other orders with mixed ice (blue rasp, green apple, strawberry daiquiri). We waited in line for about a minute and had our ice shortly after...so great. This is a quick and easy stop that's 100% worth it. A size regular is plenty but crushing a large would be all too easy in this summer heat especially if we weren't about to eat dinner. Surprisingly, the two orders we got for family survived the trip home so don't forget to take some for your friends. I really wanted to give this a 5 star review because the shaved ice is amazing, but I didn't feel safe there today. The staff didn't make it any better. I was there between 330pm and 400pm. There was a clearly disorderly and intoxicated male harassing myself and other customers for a phone to call someone. He was belligerent and when staff was made aware of the individual, did not do anything about him (told him to leave, call the police). A customer asked if they could hurry the order because she was so uncomfortable, but the order was completed slow with no sense of urgency. Visited Houey's randomly as I drove by on Saturday. Best shaved ice I've had ever! The ice wasn't too hard it was just right. My boyfriend had the Rainbow and I had the Cherry Bomb. I love that they put real cherries in it and the cream was just the right touch. Their flavors must be concentrated as well.
