Such a mix of good and bad!…read more The good: Beautiful old historic building with elegant lobby, beautifully appointed restaurant and views to die for. They have a museum of 10 huge, historic cars from 1918 to the mid 1930's. They have a wonderful outside pool, overlooking the Fjord. All of the public spaces are 10 out of 10. The bad: I get it; it's an old historic hotel, but that doesn't excuse these blunders when it comes to the hotel room. They have NO backup roll of toilet paper. This is an issue when you run out! Also, we ran out of tissues. No back up. There were no drinking glasses in the bathroom, or in the room (only a coffee cup). The one window swing open from the bottom, but won't stay open. I had to use a coffee stirrer to prop it open. The only USB port in the room were wobbly wall mounts and I found didn't charge my phone overnight. There are NO live outlets that aren't switched off will wall switches, which mean no charging from then unless you leave the wall switch on and turn the lamps off manually. Also, all power is lost when remove your key card, so no charging when you leave the room. No paper or open to make notes. Most if these oversights have nothing to do with being an old hotel. They obviously have pride for the hotel and public spaces, nut put little effort into room usability.

This is a beautiful hotel, and I really enjoy the surroundings and everything that is going on…read more They have a nice bar and a beautiful lobby that makes outstanding and refreshing drinks. The restaurants are good, a little pricey, but very good. There is a car museum in the basement that is free to check out, and I recommend if you're in the area you should definitely take a peek.

    Juvet Landscape Hotel

Yes...this is the hotel that was used for many of the indoor scenes in the movie Ex Machina,…read moreand...yes...the location near Valldal, Norway is every bit as stunning and tranquil as you would expect. This hotel has been as carefully thought out as Swiss watch. The rooms (cabins really) are functional and austere in a way that is uniquely Scandinavian, and they've been integrated into the landscape in such a way that every room has a breathtaking view. Furniture is minimal but so comfy that a day spent with a good book, pausing for occasional glances at the mountains and river, is as pleasant as a hike up those same mountain sides. But beyond the impression you get from the movie and the photos, you'll also find an owner eager to make each guest's stay special, astoundingly good food (which you'll really appreciate if, like us, you stay at the Juvet during the off-season when not much else is open), the wonderful company of the other guests, and...well...Norway!

I thought the landscape around the Juvet hotel was stunning. The view from our room was so…read moremesmerizing. I do want to say the cleanliness of our room and our sons room was not great. Hair, dust and just not very clean. It needs vacuuming, dusting... just a thorough cleaning. When we arrived I noticed in a review to ask for a robe so you can put it on over your suit when you go to spa. We arrived late in afternoon and I asked for a robe. Did not get one. The man who met us when we arrived told us where we were staying and I was anxious to see rooms. After seeing rooms I went back and asked again for a robe and the man seemed a little impatient but gave me 2 robes (one for me and my husband). Went to spa ... cover on hot tub. The sauna (steam room) was not turned on. I did not see any switch to turn it on. My son went back to find the man who greeted us. He wasn't happy about having to come to spa (according to my son). The man went to an electrical room and got it to work. My husband took off cover of hot tub and there were dead insects floating on top of water. Our 2 sons joined my husband and myself for dinner. One of my sons had a business call in the U.S . to attend to. He was 10 minutes late to dinner. The man who greeted us when we arrived at Juvet pointed to his watch and tapped it when my son walked in. This did not make my son feel good. The 1st course had just then been placed on the table. My son ate very little and left. He felt like he had been scolded and was looking forward to a relaxing stay but thus far after the spa experience and now being scolded for being 10 min. Late spoiled any relaxation. Juvet is not an inexpensive place to stay. I expect a clean and nice room and if there is a hot tub and steam room that it is operating, clean and no effort on my part to look for someone to help so we can use it. I don't think I'll make the effort or spend my money to stay there again but the view was beautiful and view from room beautiful. It's too bad it isn't operated like it could be.

Additionally, the food is absolutely incredible. I have been to the Gloppen many times and the food never disappoints. They serve a a lot of traditional Norwegian cuisine which is fun to experience the culture. One of my favorite meals here is the white fish. It is so fresh and always cooked to perfection. Last night I had the scallops with a tomato compote for an appetizer, steak served with potatoes and a raspberry sorbet with a molten chocolate cake for dessert. I was in heaven. See the attached pictures. I will absolutely be back and recommend everyone travel to experience Sandane and the Gloppen Hotell!

Gloppen Hotel has served as a wonderful base for exploring the fjords, mountains and wonderful countryside. We spent yesterday in Lovatnet and today hiking in the mountains. It was perfect to come back to the hotel and relax on the front lawn and look out at the fjord. The food is amazing and will not disappoint. The menu is all local ingredients prepared on site. Even the beer is made here! The decor is tasteful and reminds you of the fishing history and strong people who have lived in this village for generations. Thank you to the wonderful staff, we will be back!

Everything you need, can be bought in the reception when the bar is closed. If the mini shop is closed ask in the reception, they probably have all the drinks there. Onsite activities and eating: There's a sauna and small gym with good enough equipment in the basement facing the water. There are no ice-machines anywhere even though the signs say so. Ask for ice in the bar or reception. The hotel restaurant is open 7 nights a week, we never tried it though. Draft beer (60cl) in the bar is 93 NOK. Breakfast room is a bit crowded at times, try to get there before 9 at weekends and 8 on weekdays. The buffet is plentiful with good choice of selection. Neighborhood: Ålesund is a small town so it is walking distance to all restaurants and activities but the aquarium. When returning from 62 Nord Tour on Hurtigruten on Sunday evening at 7 pm only 2 restaurants were open. We chose Anno and they closed the kitchen at 8. (see separate review) Transportation: We arrived by plane and there is an airport bus that takes you to Ålesund Sentrum in 20 minutes. Three stops and the bus driver announce the nearby hotels so you'll know when to get off. Even if you would miss it, it is still not a long walk from any of the stops. Skateflukaia is the first stop when returning to the airport, try to use this stop to get a seat because the buses get crowded. The buses are coordinated to the flights. Activities: Definitely book a tour with 62 Nord on Hurtigruten - a one day tour. Can be booked at Tourist information. Staff: The only staff that actually said good morning or hello were staff in the bar and reception... Not the maids, not the breakfast hosts/hostesses, not anyone you met in the hallway actually. Not very welcoming staff that is. If you are not a Scandic loyalty member there is actually no reason for staying here, before other hotels. We have nothing against it, but do not expect anything extraordinary. Definitely ask for a room with sea or harbor view. There seems to be many different varieties on the same room types. The rooms on floor 5 seem to have ceiling windows only! Free wifi.
