The food was sufficiently German, on par with German food I've had elsewhere. Lots of meat, lots of mushrooms. The beer was Paulaner; we tried other flavors of this typical beer. It seemed like most of the other customers were also tourists, so they're probably used to international visitors at this location. Come here when you're in Frankfurt for a typical beer garden experience.

Rather than stare into the abyss of Gate Z-97, I did what any reasonable adult would do: I escaped on a train into town. Best decision of the trip. This place was an absolute oasis. Staff was warm, friendly, and spoke English (thank you, global civilization). Beer was exactly as advertised -- cold, honest, and doing the Lord's work. Food was excellent and arrived faster than my flight did. The place was immaculately clean, which I noticed immediately because that's what we do now. Even the bathrooms downstairs were spotless -- a bold move and one they pulled off flawlessly. If you're stuck in Frankfurt with a long layover, don't panic. Get on the train. Come here. Have a beer. Eat well. Remember why traveling used to be fun before airlines ruined it. Highly recommend. Would delay my flight again (not really, but you get the idea).

I took a bus there so I can't comment on the parking situation in the area. Ambiance (4/5): From the outside, Atschel looks like a homey, traditional restaurant. Which is exactly what I was looking for when it cam to my first dining experience in Germany. There's a charming inside area with wooden walls as well as a patio area in the back. I sat inside. Drinks (4/5): Frankfurt is known for apelwein or apple wine. So when in Rome...I had the apelwein spritz which adds soda and Aperol. I will say that straight up apelwein is not my jam. It's nice to try while you're in Frankfurt, but it's too bitter and vinegar-ey for me. With that being said, when you mix it in with Aperol and soda, it's pretty solid. And if you're in a group, you can get the apelwein served in large stone mugs which is pretty cool. Outside of that, they have a lot of beer, as you would expect, and pretty much everything else. Service (4.5/5): I was pleasantly surprised with how friendly and attentive the service was (which is typically not the norm in Europe). Our waitress checked on me, thanked me and said goodbye as I was leaving, and overall, did a great job. Food (4/5): Since this is a traditional German restaurant, I had to go with another Frankfurt specialty: Viener schitznel with green sauce. Schnitzel just means a thin cutlet (often pork) that is breaded. The green sauce is made from seven herbs and while it's a tad bit herb-ey for my taste, it was still interesting to try. The dish is served with fried potatoes. Filling and hearty as you would expect from a German meal. For my first meal in Germany, it was a great start to my trip.

The food was superb. The Jagerschnitzel (pork Schnitzel with mushroom gravy) was delicious. It came with a side of house made bratkotoffel (Potatoes). I ordered a side salad with the meal as well but it came late so it was a 0.5 deduction. As for the service, our server was very pleasant & kinda "German smiled"...meaning it looked kinda forced but the smile was still there. There were no complaints about this place except one...portion size. It was quit small I found so I deducted 0.5 for that. This could easily move to a 5.0 with minor adjustments. This is a do over!

When we arrived for our reservation, the same staff remembered us and showed us to our table. We were a little early compared to the local peak dinner hour, but the room was hardly empty. We were excited that they had a non-alcoholic beer. We ordered two different schnitzels, Frankfurt style and hubertus style, and a side of spaetzel. The schnitzels were perfectly fried and delicious. The mushroom gravy was fantastic. The spaetzel was terrific, too. We shared an apple fritter. The custard sauce that accompany really made the dish a wonderful experience. Service was efficient. It slowed as the dining room filled. Getting the attention of servers for the bill did take a little longer. Otherwise, the service was very good.

She recommended Apfelwein Wagner so we stopped by for dinner. Ambiance (5/5): This is where this traditional German restaurant shines. The building in which it is housed has some awesome art on the exterior. Once you get inside, there's an open air area that makes you feel like you're outside but your'e actually inside. I recommend sitting here. It's lively and the design is awesome. In the back of the restaurant, you'll find an indoor area. Service (2.5/5): European service tends to be lackluster, but our service experience was a little below even that standard. We had to track our waiter down several times. Overall, quite slow. Drinks (4/5): If you can't tell by the name, Apfelwein Wagner specializes in apple wine. The largest size is served in beautiful handmade blue and white carafes. I personally am not a fan of apple wine, but it's definitely worth trying. Instead, I went with a beer or two. You can't go wrong with that in Germany. Food (3/5): They have several schnitzels (different meats) served with potatoes and green sauce (another Frankfurt specialty). You can't really mess this one up. Solid from the thin breaded cutlet to the potatoes and the green sauce made from a bunch of different herbs. My girlfriend at the other time, ordered some ribs and they were a big dud. They were rare, highly chewy, and highly fatty. She couldn't finish her meal and I don't blame her. So a bit of a hit and a miss. Apfelwein Wagner is a popular spot and I'm glad I checked it out. I'd come for the drinks and the ambiance. rather than the food though.
