As a native New Yorker, I don't stay in NYC, but I had to book a room for a last-minute work event. Every place I went to was outrageous; someone told me to check out The Saint James and that is where I met the manager Margaret, who went above and beyond to get me a room at an affordable rate. I got to the hotel at 1:45 and they had a room available for me, the next morning when I woke up, I was exhausted and they offered to extend my checkout so that I could rest. I travel a lot and it's not very often that a hotel offers to get you in early and let you leave later. The staff was BEYOND wonderful! I hope I have to stay in the city again soon, if not I'll just pop in to say hello. That's how great the team was! read more

This is a great old world hotel. Nothing fancy but clean with friendly staff and right in the middle of Broadway and Times Square. There is a great coffee place across called Gumption and the area is full of great places to eat or drink only a few blocks away. Cooks is right next door for a quick bite and we had the best pizza at Carver's about two blocks away, which had a delicious gelato place right next-door to it called Amarinos. I've been recommending this hotel to anyone who wants to visit New York and be in the middle of all the excitement. I'm already planning another visit. read more

Great location less than a block from Times Square. Room was very basic but clean. Was concerned about the noise from the elevator based on other reviews but never heard it once. Noise from the street was another story but it's midtown Manhattan! Decent breakfast spot next door. Val's Pizza around the corner was awesome. Short walk to SummitOne, Grand Central, St Patrick's, Rockefeller, and some many Broadway theaters. read more

Booked through Expedia and the second I hit the 'book' button, I realized the wrong dates had been entered. Had to make the correction through Expedia and was told the rates had gone up (!) since I'd booked (like, 3 seconds earlier). Since the reservation was nonrefundable, I paid the higher rate. Then, when we arrived 75 minutes early (we were taking public transportation to NYC) at the hotel, we were charged a $25 "early check-in fee." We were too tired to leave our bags and walk around aimlessly for an hour, so we paid THAT fee and checked in. The room was overheated with no way to control the heat other than the window (no screen) that opened onto a brick shaft and listened to cooing pigeons all night. There was no in-room coffee service and not much in the way of amenities. Best part of this stay was the location and the bathroom was modern and spotless. read more

This hotel was part of an Expedia package I booked for a spring break trip with my teen daughter. It was fine. The staff was friendly and the location was great! However, being without a mini-fridge was more of a pain than I thought it would be. Our room was a corner and had plenty of room, but the other rooms on the floor were small. I had no trouble sleeping with the noise of the traffic and the banging of the radiator, but my daughter did. If you stay here, bring a cooler and ask for a room on the back side rather than the street side. Also, I wouldn't stay here with young kids, but overall it worked well for us. read more

Oh Hotel St James.... Where do I begin? This little gem of a hotel conveniently situated on 45th street.... I'll breakdown the good and the bad. First off, the good: - Location, location, location - truly you won't find a better location for a hotel in midtown if you're visiting Times Square or any of the theatres - The front desk staff couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming! - The lobby is quite lovely - The bathroom in our room was spacious The Bad: - The hotel elevators are painfully small - the one is barely big enough for two people - We were told our room overlooked the street.... It didn't... we had a view of a cement wall inches from our window. Word of caution on that. - The room itself is very dated. - The bed is SMALL I reserved a double room, but honestly the bed was barely big enough for two people. - The mattress was basically just springs. Not even remotely comfortable. - The hallways are very NARROW (typical of NYC) Overall, would I stay here again? Possibly. The location and the price truly can't be beat. However, this is a very basic hotel. No breakfast, no coffee, no ice machine, no fridge, no microwave. Only thing I think I would do is book a double queen room. I was only here for one night so I was happy to deal with all the above. If I stayed multiple nights, I would have asked to change rooms. read more

The online reviews on Expedia is what helped me choose this hotel. None of their reviews were lower than an 8 out of 10. Next the price was right around $200 a night in midtown Manhattan - for a room with 2 full size beds. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful - I was able to check in early - there was a $25 fee - but it was worth it to me after my flight, subway ride and walk from Port Authority in 80 degree heat dragging a suitcase and carry-ons. The first room had a couple things wrong with it - the blinds wouldn't close and the phone wouldn't work. After waiting about 30 minutes for someone to come and fix things I called the front desk a second time from my cell phone and they offered to switch rooms for me to the room you see here which is a bit nicer than the other. Since I haven't tried sleeping yet we will see how that goes - the bed didn't seem to be that great when I sat on it but here's hoping - I'll update my review after a hopefully good nights sleep. A few recommendations to the hotel - put some artwork on the walls in the rooms and some shelves in the bathrooms. Maybe a throw rug on the floor in the rooms. And maybe update the beds? Reserving judgement on that one until I try to sleep. The lobby where I'm currently writing this is very cozy and feels more like a living room - check out the books! I'm enjoying my dinner of a made to order salad from the deli next door. So far I would recommend this place as an affordable, clean place to stay for a vacation in Manhattan - with very friendly staff. Edited to add: you can hear the city sounds and that may be hard for some - it did wake me up a few times but earplugs may help. The bed is pretty awful. It feels like the box spring is shot. Not comfortable. I will probably say something to the front desk about it. Overall with the above updates I may be willing to give this hotel another try but not until some adjustments and updates are made. My 4 star rating stands - it's really more 3.5. Good deal and convenient location to most places. The room was super small (just gives you a taste of what living in NYC is like). I did have to get maintenance to fix the thermostat, as it was stuck at 76 degrees and they responded promptly. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The only downsides were not having a mini fridge or microwave in the room and they don't have breakfast, but there's a deli and plenty of restaurants nearby. 2023 #104 read more

What a joke of a hotel. If you making a booking after 3pm and in 5 mins cancel because you need to change the day. Too bad you have to pay a cancelation fee.. not 1 day not 2 days later.. 5 mins. The hotel is centrally located and clean. We were able to walk to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and Bryant Park. We ate breakfast at nearby Red Flame and dinner/drinks at O'Connolly's. The staff was friendly and allowed us to check in early (for a fee) and leave our bags for a while when we checked out. The only downside was there was no mini fridge, microwave or coffee machine in the room. Also the hotel does not offer breakfast, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby. read more

The location of this hotel is great! It's easy to get around, and I felt relatively safe in the area. The hotel room itself wasn't the typical type of room I would book, but it was fine. I wasn't the biggest fan of the shower situation, however. The best part of this hotel is by far the staff. Everyone who assisted me during my stay here was truly sensational. They were so helpful, kind, and accommodating. During my stay, there was construction going on outside in the very early morning, unfortunately, and the ear plugs didn't help much. Got a winter discount, which made this a very reasonably priced spot right off Times Square. Beds were comfortable, room was big enough. Everything was clean, and the staff was nice. Would have liked some 'extras' like coffee or tea, or even a clock in the room. No vending or ice machines, nor breakfast. BUT plenty of places to eat nearby, and who comes to NYC to eat at their hotel? The main thing I wish they would change is that when you ask them to hold your luggage, they just have you put it in an unlocked room where anyone can come or go. It's not even behind the desk. Made me a bit nervous. Otherwise, will definitely come back here. read more

Loved this gem of a hotel. It's very retro and the size of rooms proves it. Super convenient to Broadway, 5th Avenue, and Rockefeller Center. Grand Central Station is a few blocks ago for your transportation back to JFK. The best part of the hotel is the staff. Particularly, Joey. His knowledge of the City is Superb! Sure the hotel is older and it's a little noisy from the radiator pipes clanging and the bed isn't full of fluffy pillows and hotel big comforters---it's worth it! For the price you get a hotel in the heart of everything! It's literally down the street from Times Square in one direction then Rockafella center in the other. It was a safe and prime location with wonderful and friendly staff. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would love to come back here! This hotel is a hidden gem smack dab in the middle of Broadway. It is decorated like the 1940s. It's cozy and unique. The moment you step through the doors, the nosiness of the street is gone . It's quiet, unassuming and classy. The foyer is decorated like an old fashioned library. When I'm Sitting here drinking my coffee I am transported back in time, minus the cell phone in my hand. Lol. The hotel advertises air-conditioning - they really do not have any. Rooms do not have thermostats, which makes me wonder how a guest would regulate heat as well? Upon my arrival, it was a hot day; the staff had us go to four different rooms, trying to find one with an air conditioning unit installed. The manager claimed they were renovating - my booking was 7 months earlier, and they advertised AC in the listing. The search for a room took 45 minutes, by the end of which we were sweating. The hallways are not air conditioned either. We were told they could install a portable AC in about an hour, but at that point we didn't think the stay would be worth what we were paying. I gave 2 stars, because the staff tried accommodating us, and they did waive the cancellation fee, when we gave up and left to stay at a nicer hotel. read more

A couple friends and I just stayed here last weekend and we loved it. The only downside was no refrigerator to store leftovers but that was only 1 day we wished we had it. The walk to time square is about 2 minutes but it wasn't loud at all, I slept great. It has a little food mart right downstairs from it for last minute snacks and food. The location just can't be beat. The host that checked us in was very friendly and made us feel welcomed and the rooms were clean too! Every hotel seemed to be sold out so I was very glad we got this one! Perfect spot for the first time in New York! Would definitely stay again if in town. read more

I would rate this hotel a solid 2 stars. The location is perfect for the normal touristy, sight-seeing trip. We were in town for Broadway shows and this location worked very well for our needs. It is not new. Or remodeled. Or anything... we stayed in room 706. The room is really showing age. From the flooring, bedding, and paint; it all needs a refresh. I wouldn't stay here again. It just didn't feel clean to me. It worked; but there are nicer options for either the same price or close to the same price. read more

I'm stunned by the reviews. I was here during the UNGA so prices all over town were insane but $300 a night for this pit is crazy. Here's how my stay went: Arrived at 1pm and tried to check in. Was told it was $25 to get a room early. I left my bag and went to my meeting and retuned at 6pm. No one helped my with my bag in or out of the holding area which only concerned me due to bag security. I got my room and the first thing I saw was that the carpet and entrance didn't meet so there was about 2" of exposed frayed dirt. Then on opening the door a pile of dirty linens. I checked the beds and their were stains on the sheets. There were large stains on the carpet and holes and rips. The walls were filthy. Their are also window AC units which are loud and not new and mini blinds with no curtains. I grabbed my stuff and went back downstairs. The next room had a small entry hall that revealed the same dirty walls and carpet. I'm guessing it's been years since they painted. In this room the wall paper was peeling and their were holes in the drywall enough that the green board was showing. The beds were clean but the window had one large blind over both windows. If lowered over the AC unit for privacy, it's shuts off the air. You can see in the photos how I had to navigate that. I can do an older hotel and travel internationally with rooms where the only heat is a wood burning stove but for this kind of price tag I expect there to not be holes in the walls and filth on the beds. read more

Hotel St. James is an old authentic hotel based ONLY 1 block away from Times Square. It was made in 1972, which gives it its old style architecture. 12 stories high Elevators and Stairs Lobby with couches and tv Air Conditioning 2 Delis next door Coffee Shops all near by The hotel is small and cozy. I don't recommend having a huge group of people in one room or having a hotel party. It's meant to have a good nite's rest and then off to the city. I highly recommend coming to this hotel because of where it's at. 1 block away from Times Square, 5 blocks away from the Rockefeller Center and metro stops all around. It's great having the luxury of not worrying about traveling when all the places you want to go are right around the corner. Hotel St. James is quiet, cozy, and clean. The staff is excellent, real nice. When you leave the hotel you're required to drop your key off at the front desk for security purposes. 1) you don't have to worry about losing your key 2) its safer that way. its a way to keep who aren't staying at the hotel out. I've stayed in quite a few hotels in the midtown Manhattan area, and this was one of the better budget hotels. You should stay here if you want to be right in the middle of the action in Times Square. You'll be within walking distance of the theaters if you're there to see a Broadway show. Central Park is close enough that you can just walk there. The people working the front desk were always nice and friendly. The room was pretty spacious and clean. I was expecting to be in a pretty small room for the price that I had paid. Towels were clean. Bed sheets were clean. The only thing that I could even complain about was that the elevators were a bit slow and small, but there were two of them and they ran pretty smoothly. I've stayed here for the New York City Half Marathon and it was very convenient to get to the starting line. Since the hotel is located in Times Square, there's easy access to any of the subway lines. I would gladly stay here again. read more

Stayed here with a group from work for a business trip. The hotel is clean, including linens etc, beds are comfortable, service is good and prices extremely reasonable especially considering the location. Free wifi and tv. That being said, expect no annenities (everything you need is within a minute walk however, so you really don't need anything), it's comfortable but basic. I'd stay here again because of the location and prices. There are other good deals in the area also. Be sure to check out the Dunhill Deli and Catering next door for excellent breakfast and lunch offerings in a friendly, comfortable spot. It's incredibly good. read more

This hotel is in such a great location, one block off from Times Square. Within walking distance of all the major holiday excitement, Macy's, rockafeller center, empire state building, radio city music hall. Stayed for 4 days and doesn't even take any public transportation. The hotel is definitely older but they renovated the rooms to update them. The hotel room size is actually larger than many in NYC. I had a room with two full sized beds. The heater took a little getting used to, how to use and not overheat the room. I had read that if you get a room on the street it can get loud. We had a room on the backside that was actually relatively quiet for NYC. The lobby was very pretty and Joey at the front desk was so helpful and friendly. Also the concierge can arrange for a ride to and from the airport (laguardia was $50 total each way for 3 people). Call before you come for your visit. There are also numerous restaurants right there on that block, Dunhill Cafe and Cranberry Cafe, as well as 3 Irish pub/ restaurants (Perfect Pint is the best of the 3). Overall for the location and price, this is a very nice hotel. They are currently doing construction (12/27/17) so it's under scaffolding so a little hard to see it from the street. read more

Stayed 5 nights. Some parts are over 100 years old but you can't really tell. If you arrive early they hold your belongings until check-in but if a room is available you can do an early check in for a small fee. Large welcoming lobby and waiting area w large screen tv. Clean. Comfortable. Convenient location to eateries, theaters, subways, shopping, Times Square etc. No restaurants on site but no problem bc fast food convenience store and a pub/diner are next door. Drawbacks: 3 steps to enter so must ask for handicapped access (there is one). No bell service so you must handle your own luggage. No problem if you're willing and able. Location facing a busy, one way 45th Street can be noisy on weekends. Parking for taxi, Uber, etc. is problematic as there is no reserved parking out front. Bathroom has a sink only so we had to use the windowsill for toiletries. If these things don't bother you this is a good place to lay your head for a night or more. read more

The hospitality we experienced at this hotel was better than many high end luxury hotels I have stayed in. We arrived early from an overnight flight and the young man working the desk was more than happy to allow us to leave our bags and go get breakfast. When we returned we met Joey. We asked if we could hang in the lobby to warm up and he literally said, " Mi casa es su casa!" While we sat and warmed up he got us into a room as quickly as one was made up and available. Try doing that at a chain hotel without some outrageous charge or them just flat out telling you no! This gentleman was an absolute gem to talk with while we were there! So much character and willingness to help in any way possible. All of the staff were always friendly, made sure to say hi you as you returned for the day and just made us feel welcome the whole time. Our room was spotless and when we requested for it to be made up, it was done quickly. We watched the lobby being mopped and vacuumed many times and the lobby restroom was spotless! I haven't even mentioned the location!! It is maybe a two minute walk to Time Square! Like smack dab in Time Square! There is a convenience store right next door and Duane Reade is a 1 minute walk to stock up on snacks or supplies. Starbucks is also about a minute walk. There are soooo many dining choices close by so whether you are with the kids and need fast food options or adults and want something sit down you have no shortage of selections. There are not the amenities like coffee pots or fridges in the rooms but I felt that made us get out sooner in the day to experience New York! If you do not need the chain hotel experience and would like a clean, safe and very hospitable experience then the Hotel St. James will not disappoint! We will definitely stay here the next time we visit NYC! read more

This hotel is for sure outdated but makes up for it with hospitality. Everyone at the front desk was absolutely amazing. Our air conditioner didn't work and they fixed it immediately. The man at the front desk helped me get to Coney Island and figure out what to do during my trip. I also dropped my phone in the grate next to the hotel and they were able to act quickly to retrieve it and I even made my Uber pick up. Kept my bags behind the desk after check out so we could still explore the city. Maybe update a few things as it is old and musty smelling but I honestly would stay here again read more
