Ashton Under Lyne

Clean, modern look and feel…read more Bathrooms in Club Rooms are a tub instead of a walk in shower. The hand holds are too far apart even for a 6' male and the tub is very slick. I took a fall in the tub, bruising my ribs. When I told the manager, she just looked at me like I grew a second head. Those tubs need anti-slip matts. Unless you go to the gym very early or very late, don't bother its too busy as its a shared facility. Food in the lounge is fair, there is better a short distance away.

I stayed at the Village Hotel on a Sunday evening, having needed to be in Ashton in the early…read moremorning for work, the price of the hotel worked out pretty much the same as getting an early morning taxi, with the added benefit that I could wake up a little later due to being closer, so I decided to stay here and I rather wish I didn't. The location is pretty close to Ashton-Under-Lyne's town centre, being just under half a mile away from Ashton Moss Metrolink which gets you into the Interchange opposite IKEA in just a couple minutes, alongside the number 7 bus from Stagecoach on the Ashton - Stockport route. If you're not travelling in a car, this hotel can be pretty awkward to get inside due to a lack of a public walkway, I pretty much had to dodge cars walking into the hotel, and with the nights going darker as the autumn hits in full swing, it didn't feel very safe. The advertised free wi-fi was a nightmare to connect onto, I must have had to enter my details using different email address and password combinations to create an account on multiple devices, my access code didn't work either. Normally this wouldn't be much trouble, but the signal in and around the hotel on my mobile was awful, even calls didn't seem to always connect, this seemed rather odd seeing as though just meters away the signal was good, perhaps something within the hotel is offering an interference? Even when it connected, it always seemed to be disconnecting, the connection was unstable and unreliable which makes it impossible to use with any confidence the task you are doing won't be halted. The check-in experience was awkward, they expect you to check-in via an online tablet, two of them weren't working, the other one asked for a credit card and timed out meaning I had to type everything in again with no prior warning. The hotel also refused to put an extra bed in the room - despite it being listed as a facility where I booked, through Expedia and on their own website, I was told this is because housekeeping only works in the mornings. The service in the hotel was pretty dreadful overall, they only had one staff member on reception, she seemed to be trying her best but finding her was another story, due to having no phones in the room the only way to get in touch with reception is either using your personal device to phone down, navigating the unskippable pause messages and number options only to have to wait 5+ minutes and still not speak to anyone, or leave the room and hope someone is actually there (On multiple occasions no one was there) After complaining about wifi issues, someone was supposed to come to my room with a solution which never happened - I can only presume this was because due to only having one employee on Reception, she must have got busy and forgot, which is understandable but still for a hotel with over 100 rooms, there should be more staff. My bed was comfortable but that is the only positive I can say about my room, even the pillows seemed cheap, I found the room to be really dark, it also lacked basic facilities like a fridge to store my milk and a safe, it was pretty small overall. The photo taken looked much better through the camera lens of my iPhone XS Max. If only I could have added that to my glasses to get some light in my room! The only positives I can find about the hotel in general as it is a pretty nice building and the leisure facilities are good, including a bar which shows live sports as well as a spa/gym and swimming pool, this is more of a place to visit if you're interested in those facilities (and a Starbucks, yet it is a franchise location with no seating and doesn't accept Starbucks Cards), rather than a place to spend a couple of nights. They really do need to look at improving their hotel side to the business as that's what's letting them down. To make matters worse in the night, a loud noise started coming from my room, of course, they didn't pick up the phone after waiting 90 seconds to go through the hold options jut to wait to be through to someone, I had to go down to the desk and eventually switch rooms, as I had to be up early this was a really unwanted interruption. To be fair, the night manager seemed really friendly but getting in touch with anyone from the hotel was difficult, I also couldn't connect the app to my stay to use the digital key and messaging features advertised on Expedia, as I booked through a third-party, I'm not sure if that was because I booked through a third-party or the wifi issue, which kept disconnecting (for some reason even the staff admitted the wifi doesn't reach all the rooms, even on the first floor I struggled to get reception to even call someone) As a hotel, this place really is a shambles and I can count myself lucky I don't need to return to Ashton-Under-Lyne for early morning work again if I did I'd rather spend longer, wake up earlier and commute in.

The Old Bell Inn - What a Gin selection!

To be honest I was compelled to book a table here mostly to check out their massive gin collection…read more(they recently broke their own Guinness World Record and now have 600 varieties). On this occasion, however, I was the designated driver so this was more of a reconnaissance visit for my return - and I am going to return as it was excellent here. Given the choice between the restaurant and the brasserie, we chose to sit in the latter - as it would be quieter and you'd get to see said 'Gin Emporium'. You can also get their full menu served here too as well as the bar menu so I'd advise to book in advance as there aren't many tables in this section. Their Signature Menu had apparently been awarded a AA rosette, which is a rare feat - though definitely deserved as we loved both courses. At two courses for £25 or three for £30 it was very reasonable indeed given the quality of the food. You can obviously order lighter snacks from their other menus. Service was warm and friendly - we were well taken care of throughout and not rushed despite how full they were. If it hadn't been chucking it down we'd have gone for a local walk as well - the village of Delph is charming. Tip: on the last Thursday of every month they hold a gin masterclass. Tickets are £15 per person and a light supper is included.

I've been a few times now and would definitely recommend…read more Great selection of food and wine and the service is most excellent.
