The room was large and well-appointed with a very good modern bathroom and was extremely clean. The building boasts a charming courtyard and garden though there isn't much of a view of anything. WiFi was free but very slow even though the wireless server was plugged in right outside the door of the room. The main problem here was the service needs to be more polished and to provide more info. When we reserved, they gave us the address for one of the other residences in their collection. We were then told to go to this address, which involved shlepping a lot of luggage for about six blocks. Then we were told the hotel tax had to be paid in cash, despite the fact that another hotel put it on the credit card. They include continental breakfast but it is in a little caffe that is evidently owned by them or a business partner and is several blocks away. Had we been directed to the correct address and informed ahead of time that they requested the hotel tax payment in cash, we would have been much better disposed towards them.

I have to start this review by noting that I am incredibly picky and very rarely approve of hotels,…read morebut I love The Code Hotel. I couldn't be happier that we stumbled upon this option when booking our trip to Rome. The room is very clean, does not have carpeting (carpeting in hotels is a fear factor experience for me) and is centrally located to all things worth seeing in Rome. We had one incident where we lost power in our room. After sending a maintenance man who was not able to fix our issue, they sent Francesco, who I refer to as "the renaissance man" to solve our problem. Quickly and professionally he restored our power. He was very concerned not to interrupt our stay or our belongings. He also can recommend a fantastic cocktail, pasta, or desert, and we are thankful that The Code has him as a valued employee. The stay would not be the same, in fact we would have switched hotels, without the fantastic service of Francesco. It should be noted that I lost power due to running a clothing steamer, but was able to have the hotel press our items at a minimal cost. Obviously, this hotel makes smart hiring decisions by bringing someone like Francesco on board to provide the absolute best experience for guests. Expert tip: eat at the restaurant, Francesco will ensure you have a superb dining experience.

The door to the room did not block any noise, and we could hear every conversation outside and every time another guest in our hall entered/left their rooms. Luckily there were not many other guests and they were mostly quiet. Included breakfast was good, with fruit (canned peaches and pineapple), sweet fruit juices, bottled water, hard boiled eggs, tasty pastries, pie, coffee cake, coffee/cappuccino machine. Inside the restaurant there's a living tree, very cool. The location is a little out of the way from the touristy areas of Rome, but it's nearby the Ciampino airport which is why we stayed here for a night.

I wouldn't recommend it for tourists.

Let's see, where do I even begin? Chronologically, I guess…read more Check-in: We booked this hotel--for our 3-year anniversary, no less--through HotelTonight. Upon arrival after a long drive from Modena and stressful drive through Rome, we were rudely told they could not find our reservation and that the hotel was full. We were able to get it sorted out through the lovely service of HotelTonight. It was not The Duke Hotel's fault but the front desk man was still rather rude and unapologetic--so much for hospitality. Also, if the hotel was full, how did we suddenly get a room? Hmmm.... Room: The A/C was broken and only after multiple calls to the front desk, did maintenance finally come up to "fix it." He even patronizingly said not to touch it afterwards, as though we broke it!! Oh, and by "fix it," I meant the fan started working but by no means did cool air come out of that vent--ugh. By the time we realized it was not getting cooler, it was close to midnight and we were too tired to lug all our suitcases back down and find a new hotel. Did I mention how stressful it is driving through Rome?? Is that what the man meant when he said the hotel was fully booked? All the fully operational rooms were booked?! Ugh...would've much rather gotten our refund and found a hotel earlier in the night if so. Shower: Rusty drain. Moldy corner. I wish I had taken a photo. The worst part though? Rather than have the shower head aim the length of the tub, as all normal ones do, this one aimed down the width of the tub, causing the shower curtain to billow and spraying water all over the bathroom floor. Fuhhhhhh! Breakfast: New morning, new staff, new service, right? Nope. Breakfast was supposedly 7a-11a, but upon arrival the first morning at 10:30a, we were the only ones there, given no welcome, and given death stares from the staff, who cleared things away AS WE WERE EATING. They certainly did not take our coffee order either (the sign clearly stated that cappuccinos and espressos were part of the breakfast buffet). 2nd/final morning, we arrived earlier, around 9:30, as we were itching to get out of the shitty hotel. There were other patrons there, however, still no "Prego" or "Buongiorno" from the staff, and certainly no taking of our coffee orders either, though I waited patiently and watched as they took orders from 2 other tables. Are they racist or something?????? Note that our stay in Rome was part of a larger European vacation and it was not our first city in Italy, so we had other (much better) experiences to compare to. Suffice to say, I would never come back to The Duke Hotel nor recommend it to anyone I know.

The shower has a strong pressure and toiletries are included including lotion. The reason why we chose this hotel is that it was a walking distance to Trevi fountain and Pantheon. There's a bus stop near the hotel so it was so convenient to go around Rome. The Coliseum was just a short bus ride from the hotel. There's a lot of local restaurants nearby which were open until 11PM. Safety is also prioritized here since the door of the hotel is locked after midnight. Guests can ring the doorbell if coming back later. Will definitely choose this hotel again when in Rome.
