I stayed at Hotel Pemaquid for 2 nights. The location was great and is a quick walk to the lighthouse. There is a wonderful loop to walk in the mornings and the coast of Maine is so special! This is a typical 3 star place to stay. You get what you pay for. I stayed in an out-building with 5 rooms. My room was updated and clean but nothing too special. There were split units to control your AC and enough room. There was a mini fridge and small coffee maker as well as a hair dryer included. The sink area was a bit tight but worked for what I needed. The sound proofing between rooms was pretty bare but the neighbors were quiet enough. I would've loved a bit more water pressure in the shower. We stayed just 1 night at the hotel; in room 5; adjacent to the main building. It was amazing! We loved the bed (so comfortable and true king size) and shower (water pressure was fine). AC worked well and just the charm of the hotel; we enjoyed a cup of coffee in the morning in a rocking chair in the porch before we walked over to the Seagull for a fabulous breakfast. And then over to the lighthouse. Would stay again if we're back in the area! read more

I've stayed at older hotels before and was a little concerned about the condition (water pressure, cleanliness, upkeep), however our room was immaculately clean and tidy with comfortable beds and nice linens - we were in the newer hotel rooms at the back of the property. Every inch of the lobby area was cleaned, polished, and dusted - I wish Hilton and Marriott would take note. The coffee in the morning was really good - fresh and strong, and they had milk in a little frig around the corner which made my daughters very happy. I little definitely stay again if I am back in the area. Nice short stroll to the lighthouse as well. read more

My husband and I have visited the Hotel Pemaquid annually for 18 years, primarily to enjoy its history and charm. Enjoying a bottle of wine in the lobby was a step back in time; we were surrounded by gorgeous antiques and 19th century charm. Sadly, the charm is now gone. We were greatly surprised to arrive Friday (9-8-23) to see the lobby was void of all antiques, and save for two chairs, all of the furniture. Apparently, mingling with the other guests is not encouraged. On top of that, we were placed in a room other than what we reserved last year. We were moved up to the second floor which was rather problematic for my husband given his recent knee replacement procedure. Our two night stay turned into a one night stay; we felt like we lost an old friend. The 19th century gem we loved was gone. Upon arriving home I emailed the (new) owners explaining - diplomatically - our disappointment. The reply I received was very short, very terse, rather sarcastic, and did not acknowledge my initial e-mail. We will never go back. read more

I have stayed here about 15 times over the past 25 yrs. I love this historical place. The prices are good. The people have never been very welcoming or friendly. I like the place and location so I could ignore this in the past, but not this time. The woman who checked us in was so rude and cold. I wanted to say I'm sorry im here and just leave. A guest came in and said the toilet in his room was not flushing. She snapped at him instantly saying " it will be ahwile". The guest said he figured out the chain came detached and he could fix it with a simple tool. She snapped at him again. I couldn't stand it, and said we are in the penthouse suite and you are welcome to our bathroom or perhaps could use one of the shared bathrooms. The woman snapped again and said " NO!" I have had vacation rentals for 25 yrs. Stuff happens--- but you apologize, tell them you'll have it fixed Pronto or even take the guest up on his offer to repair it and give him a restaurant gift card, a free night-- something! The morning my son and I were loading our stuff up - 3 people ( one a very curt middle aged man)came.right into our room and scolded us because checkout is 10 am and it was 10:30. I was just checking the room over- bagging the trash up, stripping the bed, wiping down everything. I always leave a place spotless and clean and strip beds. Literally all they had to do was put fresh sheets on and sanitize the bathroom. I told him I always leave a little window when my guests check out. He gave me.the short staffed story- but I saw 4 or 5 people cleaning rooms. Plenty for a small inn not at capacity. I travel a lot and never been treated so rudely. We won't be back and we'll go the airbnb route. I thought I would splurge on the penthouse which was around $250/ nt. It was nice but the kitchen was lacking. No burner, not even a hotplate. Microwave was 35 yrs old and rusty, one filthy sponge. I put a new sponge out between each guest! It costs pennies! In addition, when we returned from dinner sat night the older man at the desk was reading a newspaper and never looked up and greeted us. It was bizarre and almost creepy. I finally said "good evening" and he looked out over his glasses and said "hi". These people need some serious customer service skills if they are to stay afloat. They hate their Jobs and should not be working with the public. read more

Quaint and cozy historic hotel, located steps away from the lighthouse. The lobby and public area of the hotel feels like a historic museum with antiques everywhere - old radios/appliances, stained glass windows, organ, ornate furniture. The staff was very hospitable and upfront about covid protocols/changes. We arrived very late and the staff kindly left us very through directions/instructions. Lovely hotel! read more

My son and I just spent four days at the Hotel. I had four days in the inn and my son had One night in the pilot house and thee nights in the hotel. We got there late on Friday there was a very nice young man who checked us in. Within 15 minutes my son came to my room and said we have a problem when I picked up my pillow there were some bugs. So the young man brought a cot to my room and my son slept there for the first night. The next morning I met Judy and told her about the problem and she made me feel like I was not being honest and when she questioned my son he felt the same way. So They never offered money back for the room he could not sleep in. So keep this in mind if you book this place and are not happy you are screwed. After visiting LimeRock Inn in Rockland, Hotel Pemaquid was so disappointing. While we can deal with staying at older inns, this hotel was missing too much. We had a window that wouldn't shut so we stuffed a towel in to keep the cold out. Morning coffee/tea was ridiculously weak! No morning snacks or options for breakfast which is tough when you're so out of the beat and path. Oh and all facets leaked. WiFi was extremely challenging. read more

We made reservations over nine months ago for this past week for a wedding. It was beautiful and well appointed. The Wi-Fi signal does not work especially if you're an AT&T customer. We had to walk down to the lighthouse older phones out and then we were able to download information and call the kids make sure they were doing well. Charlie and Judy are wonderful hosts. One of the most charming things about this was not available which was morning coffee on the veranda of the main house. This was because of Covid. We stayed in the chauffeurs quarters which was great except the front room is all windows no shades and it got so hot in the afternoon that we weren't able to sit out there to enjoy it. We did find out that the door in the sitting area opened up to the screened in porch with other chairs to sit in. That way we were able to get a Crossbreeze going with the fan. There is no air-conditioning. We had a fan Which served his purpose, but it was an unusually hot week that week. I definitely would go back again! I had a two night stay at the hotel: 8/24 and 8/25/2021. I booked my stay thru Airbnb. Upon check in, a boy, presumably one of Judy and Charlie's son gave me the keys to my room. I drove from NY and was starving at this point. When I asked the boy about the food at the Harbor Room Restaurant, he said he didn't know because he has never been there. It would have been nice to have been welcomed by an adult who could provide me with more information on the area. Unfortunately my stay here felt impersonal. I never got to meet Judy or Charlie. There were no personal touches here like you would expect from a similar establishment. There was no breakfast; only coffee was available in the morning. Coffee was terrible with those little prepackaged mini cups of creamer. No real milk to be found. There was no lemonade on the porch or even a bottle of water to be found. No tea and cookies. Like how much do these little touches add to cost? Cheese and fruit would have been wonderful.; there was an artist group staying there when I arrived. The artists got the cheese and fruit but not the hotel guests. I had the Butlers pantry guest suite. The decor was cute but it was stifling hot without air conditioners or a fan. All the windows were kept open at all times and that did not help the heat issue. The shower head had a fine trickle of water. How does this save money when a shower under these conditions takes 3 times as long?Lastly, why are there not smoke or carbon detectors? Do they cost too much money too? read more

I wish I could give a higher rating. The owner (I think?) who checked us in was very pleasant, the main hotel building is attractive and fun to wander through-- as others have mentioned, it's full of period pieces and gewgaws. Free mediocre coffee in the AM but that's okay, it's free. We were in one of the side buildings and had a nice porch to sit on in the morning. The room was adequately clean, in as much as the bathroom looked like it had been well cleaned since the last guest, and the bedroom wasn't dusty and the sheets were fresh. It is worn, and some of the repairs were definitely homemade, but we weren't afraid of fleas or electrocution. The room had a small fridge, which was nice. We were here a single night before heading off to Mohegan and the location was great for that, and it was okay for a night. However, we had a few problems, the most serious of which was an overpowering mildew smell, especially in our bathroom. It was strong to the point of being sickening when we first came in, but we had friends we had to meet, so we opened the windows, cranked the bathroom exhaust fan, and fired up the oscillating fan that came with the room. By the time we came back, the bedroom was much better (though it never faded entirely) and the bathroom was tolerable. Aggravating the mildew smell was a pervasive sweet/floral smell, as if someone had sprayed a particularly strong scent to cover the mildew. This actually made it worse, not better. I suspect that the mildew is because the room had no AC. Now, Maine is pretty comfortable in the summer, and nights can even be cool, so I understand not wanting to spend the money on AC. But this hotel is a five minute walk from the water, and the fog barely lifted the entire time we visited. That much moisture cannot be handled with just some fans. At this point, the carpets need to be seriously deep cleaned if not replaced, and the bathroom may need near-gutting. Another, much more remediable, problem was that the shower head was mostly clogged. No exaggeration to say we had a dribble of water. I could take a navy shower but washing my hair was out of the question. This might be solved by tying a baggie full of white vinegar around the showered for a night; if the clog is lime or calcium, that will dissolve it. Or replace the entire shower head, if that doesn't work. Either way, this was a huge drawback for any hotel, but especially one in an area where people are fishing, hiking, and doing other sweaty, smelly activities. I wouldn't be posting a basically negative review if we had been able to find an owner or manager to tell about this before we left. I checked at 7AM, at 8 AM, at 9 and 9:30 AM... then we had to go to our ferry. I didn't see any staff or management-- not a single person-- in that time. My partner called the next morning, but didn't reach anyone. We weren't interested in a refund or discount. I hope the owners address the problems. The Hotel Pemaquid has "good bones" and could be a great little inn. As it is, when we come back to New Harbor, we will be staying somewhere else. I wouldn't refuse to stay at the Pemaquid if absolutely nothing else was available, but I'll be looking for something better. read more

Maybe this isn't a better review because I came from California vs. being more local but... I did not have a good experience here. Yes, it is close to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse but that is really the only thing good about it. They take only cash or check - which made receiving a confirmation of my reservation months beforehand a bit complicated. I can get over that though. The postcard I was supposed to receive confirming my reservation never arrived but, nothing a phone call cannot fix - so I was content with that. They could not accommodate my 4 night stay in one room so, I had to switch rooms 3 times - again, I can get over that, not a big deal - but this became very difficult when they told me they could not alter my check-out times. I still needed to be checked out by 10am even though I wasn't allowed in my new room for several more hours. I really wish they could have offered some help and understanding with that : ( They agreed to add a mat to the first 2 rooms / 2 nights for me since I had 3 bodies in my party, however when I arrived late the first day (which I had notified them of) my room was missing a mat and only had a Queen. Of course, their office is closed and no one is working since this is a 'quaint' little place so, guess who sleeps on the floor (before killing lots of spiders, mosquitos, and other bugs)? Yours truly. Disgusting. The 2nd night, after sternly speaking with them about this the following morning, was a mess. The front desk informed me that they cannot give me a mat for this room EVEN THOUGH she told me on the phone that she could. So, I was forced to pay for another official bed and the price shot up. I was extremely annoyed by this as it was a last minute change to something that was already agreed upon (and now became more expensive). Grr. This 2nd night accommodation was larger and on the 2nd floor, but all the floors were uneven. The bathroom was tiny and gross, the toilet was broken, mold from the shower grew on the floor... bleh. Luckily, we were able to move our stuff directly from the 2nd place to the last place on the 3rd morning - I was happy they were able to help us with that move at least. This room was much larger and we could finally unpack a few things and feel a little comfortable. However, the format in this building was like a dorm room. Across our front door, is another front door and all the walls are paper thin. We got highlights of every adult conversation and every fight and scuffle between a group of 4 kids that stayed across from us at 4am. Also, the bathroom was gross here as well. The mold behind the toilet is enough to make you feel sick and the shower clogged so you're standing in water that hasn't drained due to who-knows-what. Upon final check-out, I asked for a receipt and was given a blank stare in return and told that I "should already have a receipt since I paid with check and my bank should be able to give me a copy". After reiterating that it would be nice to have a copy from Hotel Pemaquid, I was told "well, I'll have to go to the back and get all the information together if that is what you want". What a way to make ME - the customer - feel bad for asking for something I am already owed. I revoked my request as I was officially done with this place, but then she changed her answer and insist she get it for me. After 15 minutes of waiting for her and someone else to find the proper hand-written information they needed in order to write up a 'receipt', I was finally able to leave. In summary? If I ever return to this area, I will never stay here again. I have absolutely no problem with quaint, small-town, 'old' places, but the customer service that accompanied this one was awful. read more

Spent four days in Bungalow 8 at the Hotel Pemaquid the first week of August. First, the good points: We liked the location, very easy walk to the Pemaquid Lighthouse. The lobby is very cool, filled with antique furniture and all kinds of old stuff. It's on a quiet road, but easy to find. The room had a refrigerator and cable TV. We loved the buildings and the grounds, and just the cool feeling of history in the place. Good breakfast at the Sea Gull Gift Shop right down the street. Now for the not so great stuff. Amenities are pretty limited: No air conditioning, no phone, no iron, no shampoo or anything like that, only two towels, loud toilet and slow shower drain. Only the most basic makings of coffee and tea in the morning (no juice or even ice water), with no one in sight if you have a question or a request. Our room was noisy, right next to the driveway (and since there's no AC you have to sleep with the windows open). No curtains on the windows, just Venetian blinds, meaning wake-up time is about 6am. Also, all the bungalow rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows next to the doors with no blinds at all, so anyone walking past can see right into the room. Probably what lacked most was service: It was hard to make (and pay for) a reservation, hard to find someone to check us in, and at the end of our stay it was impossible to find someone to check us out - I ended up just leaving our key on the desk. I kept getting the line about how they're short staffed right now, but it's the middle of the summer; if this isn't your high season, what is? Hire a kid to sit at the front desk. And get a credit card reader, for crying out loud. They make them for iPhones and they cost like ten bucks. Having said all that, believe it or not, we were happy with our stay. I know that seems like a lot of negatives, but for us the beauty of the location and the character of the old hotel won out over the rest. If we stay in New Harbor again, even though I think we'll choose a different type of room, we'll still probably stay at the Hotel Pemaquid. read more

If your idea of a hotel is some sort of museum with old-timey things, this is the place for you. The first floor is all made up of parlors with an old time radio, a switchboard telephone, an old TV, an old-timey phone booth (!) They have these two old-timey Huffy bikes you can ride around in, but it's not like my Giant Rincon, baby, riding one of these is like trying to get your grandmother to move offa the chair during Price is Right. I stayed in a tiny second floor room, outfitted with a bathroom as an afterthought as I suspect it was not built with modern conveniences in mind. Though they do have wifi for the tech obsessed, probably cos an employee wanted it (I've been down that road before). No credit cards, ya gotta send a check in advance, so you know you are going into another dimension when you're here, sorta 1910 like. read more

Closest lodging to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse! Historic Property which is important to note- The main hotel/inn building has a wonderful warm feeling - The bungalow I stayed in was comfortable as well-but the bathroom is very small and sink/toilet/stall shower all in one small room. The linens in my room were worn-but I appreciated that there was a portable heater that I could turn on. ALso I did not expect a tv in the room but there is one. It was very quiet at night- Really enjoyed staying at this historic property and would stay again but if sharing the room be warned the bathroom is tiny. This is a hard place to review. It is a historic hotel with lots of charm. Which can translate to great location (a block from the lighthouse) and antiques galore. Or it could translate to no AC, no phone, floors that are not always level, bathrooms that are unique to say the least. On the other hand, those same potential faults, give it the charm that will make your stay memorable. Think Bob Newhart. Would I stay here again - probably - mainly because of the location. But if you are use to more modern hotels, you need to ensure that this throwback will satisfy your needs. read more

Disappointing. We were most dismayed at the response of the staff after we mistakenly left 2 high quality jackets in a closet. Though we called back as soon as we recognized the error, the staff were unwilling to make any kind of concession, even after revealing that the help were all new that weekend and that the subsequent guests were all members of the same wedding party that had rented out a block of rooms and therefore very reachable. First off, I'm not hard to please but this place plain sucks. Is not cute. It's not quaint. This place is nasty. I don't care how old a place is, that doesn't mean you can't update some things or make simple repairs. The shower trickles and when I mean trickles it literally takes you almost a hour to shower because that's how slow the water comes out. Toilet ran the whole time. The walls were stained brown and black. Like seriously? You can't even afford to paint once in a while? Oh and let's not forget that you have to pay in advance with a check. Huh? A pleasant surprise. Booking was difficult although the person on the phone was pleasant and tried to help. We only wanted one night and they wanted us to take 2 nights. We had to pay by check and us mail. As we planned a 10 day trip, there was concern about where we would sleep after the boat trip and we had no confirmation that the reservations were accepted. My wife and I stayed in one of the Burnside rooms in early October. The only positive was the close proximity to the lighthouse. The negatives were many; the Internet signal was so weak as to be unusable, breakfast was muffins and coffee, the shower stall was smaller than those on a cruise ship, the bathroom faucet was separate hot and cold and each was spring loaded requiring constant hand pressure to stay on which made it impossible to get get comfortable temps other than filling up the sink, the walls were paper thin and we could hear people in other rooms speaking in normal voices and at night had to listen to snoring in the adjoining room. I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone.j read more
