This used to be one of the grand hotels in Italy ... when all the wealthy people's tours of Europe…read morewould pass through Naples, this was one of the places that they stayed. It has since become more of a rough around the edges faulty towers-style hotel than a luxury hotel ... but the location is fantastic for drivers. While the Spanish Quarter is grittier and cooler ... good luck driving through the narrow, packed streets with Vespas whizzing by. If you have a car, do yourself a favor and stay here. You won't be without traffic stress here ... to get in, there is a section where 3 lanes merge into one and then bend around a corner. There are Africans selling packages of tissues or squeegy guys trying to clean your windshield who will not take no for an answer and can be annoying and scary. But, once you get in front of the hotel ... there is no valet, or person to assist with bags. You pull up in front of the hotel and drag your bags up the steps ... only then will someone run over and take your bag. They do not have a garage but there is a person in the lobby who takes your keys to their nearby garage. They give you an estimate of how much your car will cost per day to park. (Ours was $30.) Of course, upon picking up the car they insisted on $40. Welcome to Naples where tourists are marks to be fleeced repeatedly and taken advantage of. My advice is to get in writing how much the car will cost to park. Also, be prepared for the garage attendant to demand a top on top of the fee. It is still worth it not to have to drive in the actual city, though. The front desk staff were abrupt and to the point. Not very friendly, or warm. However, they were efficient. We asked for a room upgrade because it was a special occasion but they said that they don't do that. We were given the keys to our room and escorted up by a bellman with our bags, even though we said we could manage our single suitcase by ourselves. More tips. The room was small and spartan and old fashioned looking ... if you were filming a movie set in the 1950's or 1960's, you wouldn't have to do much set dressing. We had the standard room ... which meant the window faced an inner tunnel with no view and very little natural light. I imagine those with balcony rooms, or rooms which face the water, would be less dreary. The bathroom was nicer than we expected and, though not luxurious by any means, the shower pressure and hot water was good. The bathroom was all marble, so any sounds made could easily be heard in the room, even with a closed door. The bath products were terrible and cheap. There was plenty of storage space in the closets ... more than most hotel rooms of this size and a well-organized shelving system. The bed was not incredibly comfortable because it was two twin beds pushed together. We could feel the crack while we slept. Also, only two flat pillows were given and the towels were old and rough. The maroon wallpaper and lack of natural light added to the dreariness of the room ... but I will say that, although the room was small, it was laid out decently. The location is great! There are less scary people in this area ... and a lot of the nearby restaurants and shops are upscale. We felt like if we had a family with kids, this would be an ideal and safe location. You can easily walk to the downtown areas ... it is a 20 - 30 minute walk, but on a weekend, we felt safe-ish and in the morning, I walked to the Spanish Quarter for photography with no issues. There is a beautiful roof deck, which was unfortunately closed for a wedding while we were there. This is the only feature of the hotel which felt like a luxury ... amazing views of Vesuvius and the water. I am not sure what this is used for when not being used for weddings ... but we would certainly have a few drinks there, if it was a bar. Overall, the grand has faded from this hotel ... but it is still a solid option for an overnight stay in Naples, or if you want to be close to the waterfront/cruise docks.

We were very disappointed. The food was mediocre and they only served 2 courses. This was also not like a traditional buffet. They made the plates for you---which kind of didn't work since a lot of us have different likes and dislikes....So that also helped with the unsatisfaction. Unfortunately we will not come back.

For me, the 15 euros is worth feeling safe on the way to the hotel.

The street can get a bit noisy, but once you're inside, it's a peaceful retreat. There are plenty of drinking places just outside the hotel. Interior - The hallways are spacious and accessible for those with disabilities, and there's also a small elevator or stairs available. You might hear some footsteps from guests entering and exiting their rooms, though. I'd suggest checking out the restaurant just outside the hotel; they offer a sweet 10% discount for hotel guests. The hotel was incredibly clean, though it had a bit of a college vibe with IKEA-style furniture. Getting from the Naples train station was a bit of a challenge, especially with our large luggage, so we ended up taking a car service. The only downside is that you have to hand in your key each time you leave. They do have a 24-hour front desk, and the staff is incredibly helpful, friendly, and accommodating. I initially booked a queen bedroom, but they upgraded us to a larger unit with stairs and a loft-like feel. I wouldn't recommend the loft if you have mobility issues, as the bathrooms are upstairs. There's a sofa downstairs. Overall, I recommend this hotel for a walk, ability and access to some of the touristy spots. However, it is pretty far from some of the other highly rated pizza places or the coast. You're really depends on what you're looking for, but I do think this is the best hotel in the central Naples area. It was very safe.

Our previous hotel in Naples, as well as the one we stayed at in Sorrento, didn't have much floor space and we barely had space to open both our suitcases. We had to put at least one on the ground and step over it every time. So I really appreciated that I could walk around normally with both suitcases open. Hotel was clean overall, and location was nice. It was by the water so had a nice view. And there were a bunch of taxis parked next to it so when we had to take an early morning taxi to the airport, it arrived within a minute or so of the hotel "calling for a taxi" (which actually meant someone leaned out the door and waved one of them down). I'd stay here again.

The door would not open all the way as it bumped against the toilet and we had to sandwich ourselves in between both to brush our teeth - with the added joy of the backs of our legs constantly bumping against either or both. The shades keep it very dark and completely quiet. The rooms are beautiful with high ceilings and there is a free basic breakfast every day. Also, Amalfi is central to a lot of places you may want to go visit, like Ravello (highly recommend), Minori, Vistri Sul Mare, Positano, Capri, Sorrento, Salerno, etc. We enjoyed our stay here. Parking is just down the street at Luna Rossa (20 euros per day in late May).

Wow what can I say, this would have to be one of the best boutique Hotels we stayed in while on…read moreholidays in Europe during July 2011. Our room was delightful and well appointed. The breakfast was lovely and catered to all taste's. The staff were so helpful and accommodating. There is not one criticism I can truly think of. Palazzo Alabardieri is situated on a lovely cobblestone lane way, an oasis in the city right near all the designer stores (if that is what you are into.. Chanel, Armani ,Dior and one of their representatives from Paris was at breakfast the morning we were there, so I guess if it was good enough for them well.....) but also very close to the major shopping/resturant areas, via a lovely pedestrians only mall. . We really only came to Napoli for two nights to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, but I wish we had stayed longer, we will be back again. PS: we took the train to Napoli from Roma (which was great so much better than flying which we had considered) and I thought it would be an idea to warn you all about the taxi drivers... we were grossly overcharged for the trip from the train station to Palazzo Alabardieri.. on departure from the hotel to the airport the staff told us how much it should be and low and behold the taxi driver did try to rip us off ,but luckily we knew what it should cost. Buses we discovered were a little hit and miss, timetables well did not really seem to exist and very few drivers spoke English...take a taxi to the station or long distances ...and walk everywhere else. Catching the train to and from Pompeii and Herculaneum was so much fun it was summer and lots of kids going to the beaches and fans to the soccer matches singing their team songs. It was very warm the day we visited, I found taking a light umbrella much better than wearing a hat and a lots of water. We made the mistake of doing both Pompeii and Herculaneum in the one day... if you love history take your time and allow a day for Pompeii and half a day for Herculaneum. From the station down to Herculaneum is a bit of a walk but obviously OK on the way down, just take your time on the way back and stop for cold drink and a break. I would love to hear from anyone that stays at Palazzo Alabardieri and hope you have as lovely a stay as ours.

The breakfast spread, should you include, is fresh and has enough to be impressive. I didnt think it was the best I've had in Europe, but i think it more than got the job done. The air conditioning worked well. The area around the hotel looks a bit sketchy, but neither my travel companion nor I felt unsafe once. It was very convenient to the Napoli Central Station, making the hotel an excellent choice for connecting to other places by train like we did. Overall, such a nice stay! Highly recommend!!!

I chose to stay at Grand Hotel Europa on my last night in Italy. It was a quick decision made after…read moremy flight home was cancelled. I was nervous but quickly realized how lucky I was that this was the hotel where I'd stay the night. The folks at the front desk were welcoming and kind. So many little gems are sprinkled throughout the building. My room was huge for just myself, I think a family of four would really enjoy it. The hotel is very unique and exudes personality. I was pleased with the overall cleanliness of my room. The bathroom was well sanitized and my bedsheets were clean and smelled fresh. I had a very restful sleep in this room which was all I wanted to prepare for a long trip home to America. I didn't think anything could top how awesome my room was until I visited the restaurant downstairs. My server was attentive and knowledgeable of all the dishes being served, I asked him to choose my desert for me and he picked this torta caprese (flourless chocolate torte). My favorite dish of the night was the pasta but the meatball was a close second. I didn't feel comfortable leaving the hotel on my own because I was clearly a tourist and was traveling solo, but if you were to visit with a group you should do okay. It is about a three minute walk from what looked like a train station/shopping plaza where I got lunch, a pizza from the food court. I didn't have much time to explore the area but it felt like a typical downtown city area to me. I only give four stars because I was not a fan of the statues situated at each end of the hallway on the second floor, they gave me an uneasy feeling every time I left my room. I also was not too excited about the location. Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and am grateful to staff for maintaining this hotels charm and beauty.
