Loved it here! My husband and I chose the Mulberry hotel because it's in the heart of Chinatown and only around the corner from our favorite Chinatown foodie spots. The hotel is also a short walk to the Canal St. station, so very accessible. We stayed in their penthouse which offered an amazing view of the city. Room was very spacious for NYC and it came with a King size bed, flat screen, mini fridge, and robes + slippers. Hotel staff was incredibly friendly and professional. They switched the building to heat during our stay and called us with plenty of advance notice. All communication over the phone and in-person was kind and courteous. I was here as a female solo traveler ; a two night stay. I love being in Chinatown and decided to choose one right in the middle of the action this time . This hotel is just across the street from Columbus Park ; a small community park where the locals are playing chess and mah-jongg, and gathering along the benches chatting. The hotel reminds me of some of the smaller places I stayed in Europe. Nothing fancy, basic, clean.the room was very small but for just me it like it ! I would be ok with two people as well . Here are the positives on the hotel . Clean , Tidy room Very friendly front desk ; Vana and Helen were terrific ; held my bag on arrival til check in and gave lots of clear info on the hotel and area. Bed was comfy; not the best but "ok." Plenty of towels , clean bath, Nice hot water! Two waters on arrival . A kettle and small fridge . Coffee is available in the lobby 10th floor room - terrific view Temp was hot for me but the front desk guy was very accommodating and helpful so I got it taken Care of . I was BERY comfortable and happy here . Negatives I don't really have any negatives about this hotel. But I do feel like I need to say that if you are the type to be bothered by scratches on the wall or dents in the door or little quirky things like an odd room layout or quirky interior ; or an area that is gritty ... or that there's a card slot in the wall, to turn the electricity on like in European hotels ... than this might not be the hotel for you. There are lots of people if you stay on the main streets and plenty of lighting . this is also a heavily policed area since the police station is a couple of blocks over . all of the police that I spoke with were very friendly, and felt like it was fine for me to walk around, and get on the subway, as long as I was. First of all, I don't even want to write this review so that Hotel Mulberry doesn't fill up and then I can never stay here again. I LOVE THIS PLACE! We came because it was affordable and in a great location to get to around in NYC. I called in because I had issues figuring out the room I wanted on their website and OMG the person on the line was SO FRIENDLY and prounounced my name properly! The day of our checkin, I was lucky enough to meet her in person and it was like we were basically instant besties! My husband was a bit freaked out that I was so excited to check in. ha! The room itself was so comfortable and HUGE. It had a full sized kitchen and full sized fridge if you were staying longer or with kids. We were lucky enough to be placed on the second floor and it had great views of the part and NYC. The room itself was clean, comfortable and had the best pillows ever. We only stayed one night and as we checked out the smell of fresh brewed coffee greeted us in the reception. There are a few great places to eat in the area (including Latin food) and a market up the block if you are staying longer. I also liked that it was close to parking deck AND to all the shops in Chinatown. Come stay at the Mulberry if you are looking for a charming central hotel in the middle of cultural melting pot. read more

This hotel is a great location if you want to stay right in Chinatown. There are various different pros and cons to staying here but I decided to give the hotel 4 stars based on wonderful customer service, a decent room, location and a very nice mid stay clean. The room itself was OK. It seems a touch outdated and in order to use the power you need to insert a room key into a power slot. Additionally you need to carry a separate special card key to enter the front door of the hotel. Would have been nice if just the hotel key worked for everything but nice that they are secure. There are 2 nearby parking garages and no specific hotel parking. The one a little further down the street is $35 for 24 hours and the one right next to the hotel is $51 for 24 hours, woof. But I'd rather pay that then park on the street. One thing I really didn't like about the room was that the bathroom door was a sliding door. Just a preference I suppose, but it makes it feel like the door isn't really shut. Also, they provide shampoo, conditioner and lotion but no body wash... I would have rather had that then the lotion! Oh and no working fan in the bathroom... Lastly, the noise level is going to be some sort of issue which is to be expected. I asked they front desk for a fan to help drown out the noise but they didn't have one. Definitely something every hotel should have in my opinion. Upon check in and check out they were able to store our luggage for us, which was very helpful. When we checked out on 10/03, the girl at the front desk was incredibly friendly and helpful. Kudos to her! Overall I would stay here again, but next time I'll remember to bring my own fan. read more

Only minor issues were room temperature at 70 degrees was a bit too warm and the thermostat only appeared to paused the heat for 3 hours and the bed pillows were not the most comfortable. I've been to the Mulberry about 4-5 times this past year and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We've had double rooms and single small rooms. This is an okay hotel in a great location. I wanted to stay at a boutique hotel. appreciate how quiet it is, but it is a little lackluster. As some other reviewers have noted, there's a kitchenette that is completely unstocked. No utensils or anything. Breakfast is not provided during Covid. The beds are comfy, the space is small. You're not getting much. However you're right in Chinatown and only a 10 minute walk from the Brooklyn bridge. It's close to the NQR/6 lines. I cannot and will not tolerate deceitful behavior. It hurts me to leave such a negative review during covid to a potentially small business (but who knows if this is not owned by some not so small business owner). But I was beyond disappointed with my stay. The room we booked for our parents was marketed as a "larger" suite with a "full kitchen." The kitchen was deactivated and no one knew to activate it before our stay. To activate it, it required multiple conversations with the hotel management and that wasted a lot of our time. In addition, the heater didn't work. Lastly, the suite was basically the same size as the room that we were in (the regular room; definitely felt like such a bait and switch. There was also cigarette smoke coming through the vents -- no visible smoke but the smell was definitely there. It was so bad that I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I was suffocating. I had to open a window and breathe in some fresh air. I've never had such an experience in a hotel. And this indicated to me that the air circulation system was just internally circulating the air -- which was super concerning given the Covid times (this review is delayed by several months) . What I found the most frustrating was the fact that when we raised these issues, the management blamed us -- the management blamed us that we didn't call them sooner about turning on the kitchenette (which looks like a toy kitchen by the way, and who knows to ask management to "turn on" the electricity for a kitchenette?!). And they blamed us that they didn't understand we were indicating that the central heat wasn't working. Lastly, they tried to address the cigarette smoke issue and yes, it's not completely under their control. But they were unable to resolve the issue, despite the fact they also agreed they smelled the cigarette smoke. At the end of the stay, when we asked if we could be at least reimbursed for the difference of the "suite" and regular room given the lack of size difference, difficulty accessing the kitchenette, the heater issues, and the intense cigarette smoke, they basically said nope. Too bad. It's your problem. Talk about salt on the wound. 1 star for the location. read more

This hotel is super nice for the price and location. It's within walking distance to a lot of places like little Italy and SOHO. The room isn't the biggest, but can comfortably fit two people. In total there are 12 floors and a penthouse floor and I was on the 12th floor, so the view from my window was beautiful. The front desk people are super nice and accommodating. On our last day we checked out first and then left our suitcases in the hotel so we could go have brunch. There is a suitcase storage area for guests to leave their bags and they give you a tag to label your belongings. It's super secure because only staff have access to this area and you have to show them the tag in order to get your stuff back. read more

This small hotel checks a lot of my travel boxes: easy check-in, quiet (well-insulated thick walls?), close to public transportation (subway), clean. I found it convenient to get around lower Manhattan and friends were easily able to find me at this hotel. For out-of-towners - NYC hotels are NOT spacious, as a rule. This is an authentic "European style" room size, so remember not to compare apples to oranges. It is small but well-appointed with good pillows and generous linens. Hotel Mulberry checked all the right boxes for our family. It is clean, spacious for NY, and in a quieter area of town. When we needed something, the front desk came through for us. The rooftop was not open while we stayed there, and the breakfast advertised on the website has been discontinued. However, there was always coffee, fruit, and ample water provided to us. There is a laundromat nearby if you need to do laundry. I am thankful for having a safe, clean, comfortable, and pretty place to stay. read more

My family and I had a horrible experience at this hotel, first, there's no parking anywhere, second, there's a horrible, dirty smell throughout the hotel that you can't escape. Very poor maintenance. At night we were freezing and asked them to turn the heater on, there's no heater in the hotel... no heater at a hotel in New York during the winter... how can this be allowed. Towels are too small and rough. They make you pay 24 hours in advance because they know that if you had to pay after you simply wouldn't, we were booked for 2 nights and left a night early because of how terrible our experience was there. The kitchen was a complete joke. No microwave, and stove and fan didn't work first day. No pots pans dishware. They expect you to bring your own cookware!? False advertising everywhere. Stay at your own risk. So our family got 2 rooms. The regular 2 queen bed room only really had one flaw which is the beds are very clearly fulls and not queens. On the otherhand we paid 40% more for a kitchenette suite- which was also supposed to be twice the size of the other room. 1. Kitchenette - no microwave, no microwave available to be brought up, from the fan to the cooktop, none of it would turn on. After 1 night, we asked them and they said, well you have to ask to have it turned on. Like, what? if I paid extra for a kitchenette I have to tell you to turn it on? So they turned it on for the second night. BUT, no dishes or silverware... which would still be fine but nary a pot, pan or utensil to be found and none at the front desk. They said that is how every hotel does it (actually this has never happened to me where a room has a cook range but no pan) - and then they had the nerve to say that all hotels have a bring your own pan policy (yeah that is ridiculous). I have never heard of a kitchenette not having a microwave. 2. TV - not a huge deal but initially didn't work at all took 3 visits to our room to get the cable working. But the advertised channels did not work (such as espn etc), and only basic antenna - the basic big three networks were the only available. Even the sheet under the television advertised numerous channels... just another disappointment. 3. Thermostat - just did not work or turn on. Room was humid and about 70-75 and gross. When we brought this up at checkout they said they turned it off. What the heck? 4. Bathroom fan - none. The bathroom was like a sauna. 5. I would be shocked if any of their renovations were actually inspected or done by licensed contractors. The materials, fit and finish were terrible. I suspect a handyman job and unlicensed and probably not totally safe. 6. The final eye poke: On arrival I asked them which room was bigger, I should have known when they had to look our expedia reservation to choose which one which is pretty suspect when they didn't know if the kitchenette room was bigger, so they looked at the reservation and then decided it was the kitchenette (supposedly double the sq footage based on the expedia advertisement). The truth is because they forced a range top and full-sized fridge into the room it was actually smaller than the other supposedly smaller room. I have never encountered such terrible service and such little accountability with the false advertising and expectations. Every issue that we brought up they would have an excuse, and dismiss our concerns entirely (such travelers should bring their own pots for a range top). We attempted at least to have the same rate for both rooms - rather than overpaying for an inferior not working kitchenette room with no working thermostat. They entirely refused to give any refund whatsoever or even entertain our concerns. This is the most disappointed I have been in both the service and the actual living arrangements of any hotel/resort I have ever stayed at. read more

Hotel Mulberry is right in the heart of Chinatown and within walking distance of Little Italy. Great for getting food, baked good, fresh produce for decent prices. Just head up Mott street. Hotel is nice and clean and seems to be popular with European tourist, plenty of German and French staying there. Like most NYC rooms it's a bit small, super clean and a sink with counter space which is rare, at least the place I've stayed at in NYC. You get a free breakfast at a cafe a couple of doors down. It's OK. Columbus Park is right across the street and has a lot of locals hanging out doing Tai Chi and playing Chinese board games. Overall it's a really safe area. Only problem I found was that subways were a bit far to walk to. Other than that, I would definitely stay here again. read more

The view we had was amazing. I got a front seat view of the aerobics class held every morning. The beds were super comfy and I sank right into my pillow at the end of each day. When we originally checked we were given the electronic card keys and dropped our stuff off, went out to eat, then headed back to get ready for the night of NYE. As soon as we walked into the hotel, we heard guests complaining to the front desk about how they haven't received any towels. We got to our room with no help from anybody and we had about six large suitcases. Our hotel room had three beds and one bathroom. One of the beds was in a "separate" room. The ac vent in that room wasn't working. You could feel how hot it was. So we tried opening it more, just to see that there had been a TOWEL shoved into it. No clue as to why the staff would shove a towel into an ac duct to block air. We had to basically beg the staff to give us screwdrivers so we could take the towel out. They gave us screwdrivers and we got the towel out. The ac didn't improve much, it would turn on for about two seconds then immediately shut off. Also, you need a key to keep the power on?????? what???? The shower head in the bathroom is loose and it sprays the ceiling of the shower when it's on. The paint was coming off and bubbling from it spraying it so hard. The window in our room (it was a very nice view i'll give them that) creaks like crazy. The caulking on the window frame was basically gone so the window would make so much noise. The amount of dirt and stains on the walls is disgusting. There's no working vents in the bathroom so if you plan on taking a hot shower also plan on suffocating. Vending machines took the money we put in and didn't dispense anything. Management was okay but not very helpful. For $300 a night I figured it would be a little bit of a nicer place. Overall, the hotel wasn't the best. I would suggest not staying here. read more

Even if I was offered a free room I would not go back. NO parking, good luck finding a spot. The streets are so tight you can't get through. The room with a porch is a rip off. Your view is of cement dirty buildings and it smells like bad fish. My sheets had hair on them ,like they didn't change them. The bathroom had roaches!! Yes I killed a few and that was it! I demanded my money back and checked out. The owner was an Ahole!!! Didn't care about any of it, would not give me a penny back. Id rather sleep in my car then in that place. LOOK ELSEWHERE! This hotel is absolutely perfect for a copule, a single person, or a few friends going out. Compared to Times Square, i paid almost $150 to $200 less per night and I was given the same amenities, if not more (you'll see why/how) For $130 a night: 1 bed - King size Room with Balcony overlooking Manhattan (ex. Freedom Tower, local park, etc.), which was bigger than our actual room - amazing! Bathroom with large enough bath tub to lay in and soak Room service was incredibly prompt I would highly recommend staying here. I went out every night I was there, relying on taxi's and subways. The cost for a taxi ride from St. Marks was about $8 dollars. The ride from Penn Station was also around $11. Highly recommend Mama's bakery - you're given a breakfast voucher to use. worth it! If you're not into what they offer (even though its basically the perfect breakfast), Yelp Cup and Saucer - fantastic American style breakfast diner a few blocks down Seriously though, If you're doing what I did (got a hotel b/c its more fun to have a place to crash in the city while you pull all-nighters but you're still really picky about where you stay) this is the place to go! The hotel overall is like any other. Plus for the view of the WTC. If you like tai chi, you can be a creeper from your window by watching dozens practice in the park across the street. But I'm really here to talk about the breakfast. The free voucher gets you a set of options. Most are variations of carbs - pancakes and a couple pieces of fruit, waffle and fruit, oatmeal and fruit, French toast and fruit. But then there's the option with eggs. Do that. Just don't get them scrambled or as an omelette, and don't get the cheese. Then opt for any of the veggie sides and you'll be set. read more

Don't pay the extra for a refundable room. You won't get the refund and will be charged a hefty, and I mean heavy surcharge fee. BTW nowhere do they list their policy on the surcharge fee. We had a reservation for two people, three night stay. One person's mother died. We called three days ahead, but not 36 hours ahead. We had to fight to get at least two days refunded. The third day, they would not refund and charged us almost a $200 surcharge. The surcharge was calculated on all three nights. They refused to let us talk to the owner or a manager. Would not give us his/her phone number or email address. We have stayed at this hotel for the previous two years. This was to be our third stay! The reviews listed were correct. It is a very nice hotel with a good location. However, as far as I'm concerned, a place is only as good as the service they give you when there is a problem. In the end, we could tolerate the charge for the first night, but the random extreme surcharge was unacceptable. We will be back to NYC for sure, but absolutely NOT at this prosperity. How sad to loose loyal customers over this. They could have cared less that this was our yearly visit. Once again, don't pay extra for the refundable room. Hotel Mulberry is a great place to stay if you're looking to find comfort without all the bells, whistles and craziness of a place in Midtown. The rooms are generously sized, the beds were comfortable, there were three nightstands (one for every person sharing the bed), the wi-fi connection was reliable, and the pressure of the shower was GREAT! I know, why mention the shower, right? Well, as I was checking the TripAdvisor reviews for Hotel Mulberry, I noted that someone made an emphatic comment about the shower pressure ... and it is SPOT ON. Something about even, solid water pressure from the shower head is very refreshing after walking around the city all day. Why am I writing about a shower head?!? But it's small things like this that make Hotel Mulberry a great value. The hot water/tea in the lobby and breakfast vouchers were also pluses. And in terms of location - it's close to Soho, and just a few blocks from the NQJZ lines on Canal so it's easy to go Uptown if you need to. We were pleasantly surprised with Hotel Mulberry for accommodations and would stay there again for sure. NOTE: Chinatown car services are just a call away if you need a cheap ride to the airport.
