If you're looking for a quirky hotel, with a lot of antiques and ornately decorated rooms, common spaces and corridors, then this is your hotel. I read the reviews and descriptions on decor before booking, but nothing can really prepare you for this place. For example, we were on the 3rd floor, it was decorated with about 100 crucifixes. Getting up to floor 3 was like climbing Hogworts staircase from Harry Potter. If I had to describe this hotel it would be a cross between Disneyland Haunted Mansion, meets Hogworts meets Asian bordello. This place has every inch covered in weird collectables, candles, old lamps, velvet furniture or mirrors. We booked a lagoon view room, which it did have, but the room was small, dated and the bathroom was very tight. Yes, it's Europe so everything is tight, but even the closet had a small curtain which was very basic, old furniture antique style, and the lamps had 'iffy' wiring. Some weird stuff happening here for sure. We had night service, with towels delivered and freshening up of the room nightly. The door key is huge, you leave at the desk when you go out, feels like an old west saloon style system. The buffet breakfast was great, service staff was excellent-- but the coffee was horrible. If you can't stomach the coffee and need a Cappuccino it's 8€, which is highway robbery. Coffee included with buffet needs improvement. The in room coffee is instant with no creamer - ugh. The in room coffee is in a basket, which is strange considering the room is small and there isn't really anywhere to plug the kettle into. We booked our arrival and departure transfers with the concierge- the service was excellent. Location is very close to San Marco square, water taxi can take you to their own private dock, which is in a little channel on the side of the property. It has a cute secret courtyard garden in the rear that has plenty of seating and is open for use during the breakfast buffet. Mini bar items are costly, makes sense to go the a small local shop for waters, snacks and beverages. I don't think I'd stay here again, for the cost of the room it was pretty tired and small. read more

We stayed here Sept 26-28, 2024 From the train to this hotel it took approximately 45 mins on the water taxi which included numerous stops along the way. Checking in was fast & efficient. Every staff member we encountered were very nice and spoke English. Our room was roomy but be aware the decor is very dark. The bathroom was small like most of the bathrooms we encountered in other hotels in Italy. The hotel location was great as there were plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. The FREE Breakfast Buffet had a variety of food options. You have the option to sit inside or outside. We booked a private water taxi to take us to the train station. The water taxi picked us up right at the hotel. The cost 70 euros. We were at the train station within 15 mins. Overall our trip to Venice was great. Ciao Venice!! read more

The hotel was one of my favorite hotels of all of the hotels that stayed in during these 12 days trip through Europe. I felt so...so...I am not sure that I can even put it into words. The staff was chef's kiss. The breakfast buffet I can say enough about it. The chef actually makes the butter from scratch. The marmalades from scratch. Like this place is so divine! The bathroom toiletries; OMG. Smells so good! I have literally been slowly using the body oil because I don't want to run out. I genuinely cannot say enough about this place. And the story behind the dad that owned it and the son taking over. I love how the decor of the hotel is primarily made up of all of his dad's collectibles throughout his years. read more

Perfect location, between San Marcos and the Giardini, for biennale goers. Beautiful historical building with a convenient entrance from the canal, if you arrive by water taxi. The service is impecable, and the rooms are good, not super great but there is nothing to miss in them or to complain about. Best feature is its garden, where you can find the balance of tranquility to prepare and rest from Venice liveliness. Breakfast there are unforgettable. Not cheap, but neither super-expensive. I snuck in here to escape torrential rain and ended up falling asleep on a lush velvet bean bag in the bar area (after I took a picture of it) True definition of: lounge. Very comfortable seating and redefines the bean bag. This hotel lounge seemed very Moroccan themed, staying consistent with Moorish influenced design of Venice. It was romantic and resplendent with rich red/maroon tones. Gorgeous. I loved it. This would be a perfect after-hours lounge particularly on a rainy day. I have to write this review because this place is the biggest ripoff in the whole Venice. It is a TOTAL SHAMELESS SCAM OF A RESTAURANT. I went in for the decor and because it was quiet- red flag. I ordered the tapas combination- venetian. they brought me the oriental tapas which consisted of 2 pieces of dry breaded medium shrimp, 2 scallop size bites of tuna that was called tatami that was overly cooked with no special sauce on it. 2 small round size crackers the size of a scallop with a half teaspoon of store quality humus on top and 2 asian style soup spoons with a half a teaspoon of babaganoush. i told them the meal was absolutely horrible and ridiculous . it cost 35 euros. the cost of the ingredients was less than 1 euro. the things didn't even go together and they were not even what i ordered. the sever was a smug older guy who was sizing me because i was eating alone. They offered to change the meal for a scalp dish - so i changed all that for 3 scallops.. the bill came and it was 98 euros for that and 2 glasses of prosecco and water. They had a 10 euro cover charge coperta. it was my first day and i didn't know .. no other restaurant charged more than 3 not even a MIchelin rated one: Stay away from this place! i will report them because I am sure there are regulations about the cover charge. I hate places ripping off people like this. Overall, this is a very nice hotel in a great location. Our room was on the side canal but if you craned your neck a little, you also have a view of the Grand Canal. I don't agree that this place is worn down in the least. A lot of the decor is antique. Our room was fairly basic but not tiny. There was an area to sit and the bathroom fit our needs well. This is a pricey hotel but everything on the canal (hotels, restaurants, bars) in Venice is expensive. The English options on the TV were pretty limited. CNN and BBC news. One thing to look out for is mosquitoes. Up until our last full day in Venice we had no issues with opening our windows and looking out. One morning I went to open the shutters and something flew into my mouth. Ummm... gross. I quickly shut the window and turned around. A nest must have hatched because our walls and ceiling looked like something out of a horror movie. At least a hundred mosquitoes lying in wait to attack. Our whole room had to be cleaned out. I'm not sure how they did it but I didn't get one bite. The front desk staff was awesome with recommendations and advice. Don't speak English or Italian? It seemed like the staff spoke a few other languages too. On our last day we took a private water taxi from the hotel's dock to the airport. It's expensive (120 euros) but worth it. As for the hotel's bar and restaurants... Oriental Bar: expensive but drinks come with an antipasti tray (see the pic) which makes the average cost of 15 euros per drink seem a tiny bit less ridiculous. The service is slow and a couple of times I wondered if the bartender hated us. Don't expect over the top friendly service. Patio restaurant: once again, not the friendliest servers but they do make sure you have everything you need. If they're serving the lobster linguine, you absolutely must get it. It was probably one of the best pastas I had in Italy. Met restaurant: very good. We each did a different tasting. My food was traditional and the hubby's was essentially the same concept as mine, but deconstructed. I thought everything was prepared and presented well but not completely worthy of the huge price tag. Lovely property! Definitely old world style! Good location with easy access to everything! I would stick to yelp for dining suggestions. We loved the breakfast in room as well as downstairs in the dining area...and the full coffee set up...quite the experience. The bathroom is a tad bit small but the room was nice and the daily service was great as well! It's on the water so perfect access to restaurants as well as local shopping! Easily the best food we had in Venice. Right along the Grand Canal in the Hotel Metropole, Met Restaurant couldn't be easier to find. Atmosphere is so so stiff, stuffy, formal. Be sure to pack your monocle. That's pretty much my only complaint about the restaurant. Water list. I was ill prepared to make this kind of critical decision. Minerals, pH, origin, what will they mean? We selected, water arrived. It tasted like quality water. Good...Good...just as we intended. They offer a couple different tasting menus, one of which they tell you nothing about, and you may not take pictures. I forget the specifics, but I remember every course being at minimum good, my wife loving even the pigeon, and a hickory aroma explosion as the servers swirled the lids from an arriving dish. Our wine was good but not as amazing as others we had throughout our trip. Some of that is the luck of the draw though. Creative presentation, wonderful food. Two Michelin stars is about right. Not the pacesetter, but still 6th Yelp Star worthy. read more

My husband and I decided to eat at the Met restaurant on our last night in Venice. To start, the service is outstanding. Our waiter, Michael was funny and made the entire meal so much more enjoyable. You really feel taken care of here. The sommelier had perfect wine recommendations. We decided to go all out and order the 9 course mix of the traditional and contemporary dishes. It was an insane amount of food and we were stuffed. It was nice to sample the same flavors in two different ways. I really enjoyed the traditional dishes the most. Most impressively, Michael ordered a special dessert for us upon arrival that takes two hours to make. They bring out a table cloth and plate the desert right on the table. I'm sorry, but this hotel was very disappointing. Quite expensive with very old furnishings in a very small room. We paid over €790 per night for something that is probably worth about €400 per night. I think I've had better hotel rooms at the holiday inn. The concierge was only minimally helpful. We asked him to book us train tickets and he seated us all in separate seats on the train so we couldn't even sit next to each other. He could've told us that ahead of time. My friend and I were looking for some afternoon drinks as we were ambling through the streets of Venice. We were walking down this main street where there are a number of cafes that have a great waterfront view when we stumbled across Hotel Metropole's bar. All the other cafes that we were looking at had a cover charge, and my friend wasn't willing to pay for it. Hotel Metropole's bar was the only one that didn't, and despite paying much more for a Spritz than was necessary, it wasn't an experience that I regret. We both ordered a Spritz--our first Spritz ever and quite the quintessential Venetian drink. The highlight of the drinks was definitely the appetizer platter. This wasn't just your typical potato chip platter--we had some raw ham cubes, mozzarella balls, pretzel sticks, and potato chips. While each drink came out to be 9 euros, I would say that the classy atmosphere and delicious and filling appetizers made the price more than worth it. The waiters were friendly and spoke decent enough English. The hotel itself is beautiful. I used their restroom and wandered around their lobby looking for it and was really impressed by the decor. Nice hotel, great bar. From what I could tell, they also serve some sort of pre-set dinner that sounded quite fancy. tldr; expensive place for a drink, but no cover charge and great appetizer platter! read more

As I was wondering about the waterfront area of Venice when happened upon this secret lunch spot that will now be my go-to spot when I visit Venice. I had been walking for hours and when I turned down the incorrect alley for the third time that day when I saw the entrance to the garden area of the Hotel. I was greeted by such a kind and gracious staff I ended up staying for lunch. They sat me in their peaceful and cooling garden where I enjoyed prosecco and cooled down. As plates of the most delicious-looking food continued to pass by me I couldn't help but order from the menu. I was recommended the special of the day which just so happened to be pork cheek (one of my favorite dishes) and it was amazing. I'm so glad a got lost down that alley because this spot is one of the best lunch experiences I have ever had. read more

Not a very nice hotel. Small crowded rooms, tubs leak on bathroom floor, breakfast very limited and not good tasting. We asked to leave two day early because we were not liking the hotel or service. Most staff speaks very limited English so this was a problem compared to most hotels here. They said they will only refund us one day so we lost a days room rate. This was not made clear when we discussed it earlier. We moved to another nicer hotel. Pictures on website were taken with wide angle lenses. Very deceptive. read more

After coming to the bar restaurant at the back of this hotel which has always been one of my favorite in Venice for many years . Today I had a horrible experience at their back garden area . The server was annoyed with us being there for drinks and appetizers at 2 pm. We have been here before at this time in this part of the hotel and always had a great service . I can't begin to tell anyone how bad the experience was and considering the price and location the manager of this bar restaurant should really worry about it. The staff obviously doesn't care about making this place money and they were all just sitting around chatting in one of the adjacent rooms without helping . They made us wait 20 minutes and then told us we had 10 min to order with an attitude . Do you like old stuff? Like old gothic lamps, candles, and body armor? The Metropole is floor to ceiling with this stuff, like they used to have 5 hotels and had to downsize into just one. It's certainly unique, but don't expect luxurious. The (tiny) rooms and bathrooms haven't been touched or upgraded in at least 40 years. It is worn down and showing its age. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun experience and the service was quite friendly. I just expect more at $550 (pre-tax) per night. read more

We stayed at the Hotel Metropole last weekend. While we were excited to stay at one of the few five star hotels in Venice, our experience at Hotel Metropole made us swear off the the city forever. We were attacked by bed bugs on both nights of our stay. Because it was August and Venice is on the water we thought we were getting bitten by mosquitos. It was not until we were on a plane flying home that we became suspicious the bites were not the norm. After a quick google search our worst nightmare was confirmed. We were covered in bed bug bites. We immediately called a pest inspector and after they sprayed we found bed bugs that had hitched a ride from the hotel. We attempted to contact the Metropole, if nothing more than to warn them that they have a problem and spare others who are staying in our room (101) the same bad luck. However, the hotel has been nothing but rude. They refuse to acknowledge that we were bitten at their hotel. They repeatedly do not answer calls and emails and when they have, they pretended that they did not know/understand what bed bugs were. The service has been absolutely appalling. Forget a refund, there has not even been an apology! We were so looking forward to a lovely stay in such a beautiful city and instead ended up having the inefficiency of the Hotel Metropole follow us all the way home. Not to mention spending hundreds of dollars trying to fix the problem. We will never stay here again, and have warned all our friends. At least we listened to previous reviews and avoided the tacky 90s restaurant. The one highlight. read more

Checked in here for the exact date of our one year wedding anniversary for a 4 night stay. Asked for a better room than the one in the back of the hotel on the first floor. The front desk clerk remarked that the next upgrade is "400 euros per night. I don't think you want to spend that..." He realized he was sounding slightly derogatory and corrected himself and said something to the extent of "it's very expensive, save your money for everything else." However I caught it. From that point on it seemed downhill. The room was a small room in the back away from the other rooms, the bath tub did not drain fast enough during out showers and was not fixed (despite me telling them on day 1...it must be a chronic thing I could see the water marks on the white shower curtain). Don't open your windows if you overlook the side canal as you will get bit by something. They arranged a "free" taxi to murano but you aren't allowed to go out and explore the island...it's a ploy to get you to buy expensive glass. Sucky one year anniversary stay. Should have done the hilton with the rooftop bar I suggest staying somewhere else. read more

The Met is in a sumptuous -- but not over the top -- comfortable room in the hotel Metropole. Everything served was great, and sometimes transcendent, especially the pasta. Both my date and I agreed it is one of the best dinners we've ever had, in Venice or anywhere else. The staff spoke English well and provided excellent service, too. Some especially fun tidbits: they have an excellent cheese cart, large chocolate sampling desserts and several surprise courses (more than courses we paid for). read more

We were passing by, sulking about the terrible hotel we re staying at (a supposedly 4star), and we stumbled on this gem. The staff were so extremely nice. We stopped for a cup of coffee, and to warm up. The welcoming staff, the calming ambience, and the pricing have convinced us to give a try to the Met on our next trip. Great location, super service, and it has a really super bar/restaurant that will serve up some great cuisine if you get there before closing. Try to get a room with a view of the Grand Canal rather than the side canal. What I like about the Metropole - it's centrally located, but also a bit away from the more popular tourist hotels near San Marco. I also recommend the hotels on Giudeca, but they are a little more expensive. Also they have great breakfasts in the garden cafe, which is really serene and tranquil. read more

Wonderful hotel, stayed for 3 nights and it was all exceptional! The breakfast buffet was top notch, plenty of options, and delicious. Rooms were cleaned and checked up on every single time we left the hotel, no matter how many times a day! Reception was very helpful and great location. Lots of great places to eat nearby (Duh, it's Venice) and close to major boat taxis and docks. Far enough away from St. Marks that the area isn't completely crowded even in June, but close enough for a 10-15 minute walk. read more
