The regulars, Chef Robair, Joanne, Denise, Gus, Eddie, Tom...they're all a bunch of sweethearts and actually hilarious folks who just happen to be very generous with their time and energy. And honestly, it was more fun than charity work has any right to be: We chopped, we cooked, we washed dishes, we served, we sang...and at the end of the day, more than 200 hungry people got a nutritious and actually tasty meal. (Most of the produce comes from the Park Slope Food Co-op, and other awesome local spots like Runner & Stone, so essentially these folks are eating quite well for at least this meal.) There are far worse ways to spend your time (I should know), and not many better. Another time I was told that they don't have space. So they have space for new, name brand clothing but not for gently used? Doesn't make sense and something about this is really disturbing. Spin it any way you choose but it feels wrong. I donated everything to another pantry in Brooklyn and everything thing, shoes, clothing, bags, coats was gone in 30 minutes. I also had my daughter pack up all her gently used clothing, teaching her to help those in need but she learned another lesson and I will leave it there.

Now, I've never stayed at the Shelter, or any shelter for that matter, but this one is very attractive from the outside. Built in a former armory, it looks like a castle with its turrets and big arched doorways. There's been a lot of talk in the neighborhood about the city consolidating other shelters and making the Peter Young location a primary intake center for the area. Naturally no one is excited about the idea of our block being ground zero for the down and out, so here's hoping the city comes up with a better plan. In the meanwhile, I try not to linger outside the shelter and attract any unwanted attention, but I have to say that the interactions I've had with the guys hanging out front have been fairly pleasant. One guy told me I was an angel. Nothin' wrong with that. So for your friendly residents and nice architecture, Peter Young Shelter I give you 3 stars.

I attended a Saturday morning service and Bat Mitzvah, and was impressed as soon as I walked in the building, I was immediately impressed with how light, bright and open everything was. The rabbi has a great personality - his love really comes through. The cantor has one of the most amazing singing voices I've ever heard - she is phenomenal! This is a reform congregation - and as the reviewer Joel mentioned - everyone is welcome! Gay, interfaith, whatever. It's a very warm and inviting place of community. I don't know that I was touched by the spirit to seek out a religious connection - but if that ever were to happen, I'd really hope I could find a place like BHS to call home. Interfaith and gay families have a home at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. There is a great concern for Tzedakah, education and mutual support. BHS has been running a homeless shelter for over 20 years, religious services, educational programs and social events. It is a place that can easily become your home.

After vowing to never rent from U-Haul again, circumstances were such that I had to give them another go. Tip #1: DO NOT pick up OR return your rental truck after business hours. Call the location to make sure you know when staff is there and when staff leaves on the day you are picking up and returning your rental. This way someone can assist you when the online process crashes and doesn't work, which ALWAYS happens. I made sure to pick up my rental at 9am on a Sunday. SELMA was there and using an iPad, she assisted everyone on the cue, entering in their information so that they could pick up their rental truck with relative ease. SELMA was amazing!!!!! I was in and out in about 10 minutes and I didn't feel like crying. I just returned my rental vehicle today, Tuesday and arrived at 9:30 AM. I had my Uhaul rental order cued up on my iPhone ready to drop off and go through scan-click-scan-take photos-upload-app crash hell, but instead, staff member KAVON greeted me and said he'd be responsible for check out, and that I didn't have to go through the app nightmare. He asked me how the rental vehicle was during my move, and he confirmed how much I was going to be charged which matched the estimated cost of the rental I received when I booked the truck. Tip #2: It was still my responsibility to take photos of the rental after check in to be able to drive off the property and was subjected to having to use their online system. Sadness. As always, it crashed on me after I had taken and uploaded pics, but the second time it worked. I MOSTLY check "dispute" and upload if the there is even a tiny scratch on passenger side, front, back, roof, interior, etc. I rarely check on "accept". Since I returned during open business hours, KAVON took over the check out and examined the rental upon return and did not find any "damage" that wasn't already there so I was free to go. They don't belong in a men's shelter. The food is horrible. Although this is suppose to be a new shelter, they have removed fans, air conditioning, and the water fountain serves up warm water. So when the hot weather comes, people are going to suffer. In the bathrooms, there is no soap to wash your hands, no paper towels to dry your hand, and they removed all of the shower heads so when you try take a shower, it just comes from the overhead pipes. They are also legal thieves. What they do like most Private Contractors is extract taxpayer money from The City, provide little or no services, and then take credit for something that they don't do. For example, you are homeless with no assets. You go meet your case worker where they tell you, You need documentation. Then they tell you to go to HRA to open a case. After that, all they do from that first encounter, they just monitor what you are doing. Once you get the documents that you need, you are on your own. There are no programs to put you in housing nor do they provide program assistance to get you out of the homeless system. To give you an idea how much Project Renewal makes in a month, the City pays about 1500 a bed. Times that by 177 beds equals $265,500 a MONTH. This is just from 1 Shelter. This should give an idea how broken the system is, and how thievery comes into play here. They also don't allow food from the outside to eat in the cafeteria. Stay away if you can. I am trying to get out of here.

I tried the Hillsong mega experiences and also tried the traditional Methodist and Pentecostal environments. Non really resonated with my core at all. I didn't feel at home. When i tried Forefront, i didn't have any expectations. Church was warm and non invasive. People are real and humble. It's OK to not know what you're suppose to do at church but feel apart of it (this is what struck me most). There was a combination of good, warm music that got me into a peaceful state. The band that rotates every week are just really good folks who want to jam out to Christian Worship music! The Lead Pastor Jonathan is super relatable and is someone you would have a cold beer with. He's not your traditional pastor. He comes from a non-traditional background with an interesting upbringing which is why he's so relatable. I would consider Forefront a very progressive church, inclusive and diverse to all folks who are questioning. If you're looking for a warm comforting church filled with young families, professionals, artists or just anyone looking for Christ. This one works very well! This is my second year with Forefront Brooklyn and enjoy going every week. Free coffee and local bagels to boot! What's not to love?!

I have met so many friends that have selflessly helped me through difficult times with prayer and actions. I occasionally sing during worship service with my mother who is very active in the church. I also volunteer at KidsStuff, caring for children of all ages making art, reading passages, and singing songs. This is an inclusive FOR ALL church and has many small groups where you can connect with the community outside of service (game nights, poetry readings, etc.). It is the first place I have felt completely welcome and accepted for who I am. You are never preached down to or judged. I have found friendships, work connections, and most importantly people who have become family.
