Spin it any way you choose but it feels wrong. I donated everything to another pantry in Brooklyn and everything thing, shoes, clothing, bags, coats was gone in 30 minutes. I also had my daughter pack up all her gently used clothing, teaching her to help those in need but she learned another lesson and I will leave it there.

I absolutely LOVE to help others so this was definitely my kind of party. The staff was very friendly and nice. To be quite honest, I've never even heard of this place before this event but I'm so glad that I know about it now. I will definitely be back in the near future to volunteer again. CHIPS houses 9 young women who must be 21 years old and over and pregnant in their third trimester and allows them to have a place to stay for one year. They must go back to school and participate with in-house activities. CHIPS offers so much more programs as well. I spoke with Denise who is the executive director about the possibility of me coming back to volunteer with my church and she said that it was fine but I would have to participate in a training class which takes place the second Thursday of each month at 9 am and the last Thursday of the month at 6pm. I had a great time volunteering alongside my fellow Yelpers Peter D, William K, Aura B and Steven S. I'm looking forward to more opportunities like this in the future. Now, I've never stayed at the Shelter, or any shelter for that matter, but this one is very attractive from the outside. Built in a former armory, it looks like a castle with its turrets and big arched doorways. There's been a lot of talk in the neighborhood about the city consolidating other shelters and making the Peter Young location a primary intake center for the area. Naturally no one is excited about the idea of our block being ground zero for the down and out, so here's hoping the city comes up with a better plan. In the meanwhile, I try not to linger outside the shelter and attract any unwanted attention, but I have to say that the interactions I've had with the guys hanging out front have been fairly pleasant. I attended a Saturday morning service and Bat Mitzvah, and was impressed as soon as I walked in the building, I was immediately impressed with how light, bright and open everything was. The rabbi has a great personality - his love really comes through. The cantor has one of the most amazing singing voices I've ever heard - she is phenomenal! This is a reform congregation - and as the reviewer Joel mentioned - everyone is welcome! Gay, interfaith, whatever. It's a very warm and inviting place of community. I don't know that I was touched by the spirit to seek out a religious connection - but if that ever were to happen, I'd really hope I could find a place like BHS to call home. No transparency was given during the process, I was given the chance to meet the kittens I was interested in but at no point before did Donna mention that other appointments were also made and other applicants were being considered, until after the visit. I was shattered emotionally and no updates were given to me on the process even after I reached out. I understand you are busy but could've at least let me know if they were adopted. The other thing I liked was that we found free on-street parking right across the street on Ocean Avenue. Amazingly we also found parking right by Central Park as well. (This trip was a superb driving one) Even hanging out in the van, having a cold one at the parking spot was a fun experience. There's even a cafe in the middle of the park that is super nice! Worth seeking out when visiting Brooklyn.

They don't belong in a men's shelter. The food is horrible. Although this is suppose to be a new shelter, they have removed fans, air conditioning, and the water fountain serves up warm water. So when the hot weather comes, people are going to suffer. In the bathrooms, there is no soap to wash your hands, no paper towels to dry your hand, and they removed all of the shower heads so when you try take a shower, it just comes from the overhead pipes. They are also legal thieves. What they do like most Private Contractors is extract taxpayer money from The City, provide little or no services, and then take credit for something that they don't do. For example, you are homeless with no assets. You go meet your case worker where they tell you, You need documentation. Then they tell you to go to HRA to open a case. After that, all they do from that first encounter, they just monitor what you are doing. Once you get the documents that you need, you are on your own. There are no programs to put you in housing nor do they provide program assistance to get you out of the homeless system. To give you an idea how much Project Renewal makes in a month, the City pays about 1500 a bed. Times that by 177 beds equals $265,500 a MONTH. This is just from 1 Shelter. This should give an idea how broken the system is, and how thievery comes into play here. They also don't allow food from the outside to eat in the cafeteria. Stay away if you can. I am trying to get out of here.

I have met so many friends that have selflessly helped me through difficult times with prayer and actions. I occasionally sing during worship service with my mother who is very active in the church. I also volunteer at KidsStuff, caring for children of all ages making art, reading passages, and singing songs. This is an inclusive FOR ALL church and has many small groups where you can connect with the community outside of service (game nights, poetry readings, etc.). It is the first place I have felt completely welcome and accepted for who I am. You are never preached down to or judged. I have found friendships, work connections, and most importantly people who have become family.
