The hotel is right next to a river and it's beautiful. I loved the balcony and our room was a good size. Stayed two nights in August and it was a great experience. Free breakfast buffet was a nice amenity. One of the more remote places I have stayed, but hearing the river from the room was great. It felt very authentic and there is good Austrian food available in the town.

Great hotel and restaurant right on the Lake with the best location in Hallstatt…read more While our room didn't face the lake, it was large, had all the amenities that you would want like large towels and toiletries, and a super comfortable bed that had me wishing for a nap the second we walked in. Several others in our group got rooms facing the lake and some had balconies! We had lunch out on the dock in the back with was a great place to enjoy a glass of wine, a salad and to just wile away the afternoon. Make a reservation or you will be disappointed, although they do give preference to people that are staying in the hotel which is how we got to have lunch out there. There are umbrellas that they will adjust for you if the sun is too intense. I also ate at their indoor restaurant and had fresh trout that was just delicious! We also had a local dessert which was like pieces of dough and applesauce, but whatever they call it- I hope you aren't cutting back on carbs cuz it was delicious! Seehotel Gruner Baum definitely has the best location and views in this little town!

A little pricey but not bad for the service and quality of food. It's an establishment where the locals hang out so you know the food and service must be top notch.

Breakfast was also included in with the wedding room rate and it was one of the most awesome breakfasts I have had ever. Fresh breads (croissants, rolls, etc.), plus so many different jams to choose from. Fish (e.g. lox, white fish, etc.), cheeses, scrambled eggs, bacon, a european like meat (kind of like luncheon meat?), drinks (including coffee from a most amazing coffee machine with freshly ground beans, etc.). Wifi was also available and included (e.g. no extra cost). The reception was held there too and the food was just as amazing for dinner. It started out with the traditional pumpkin soup. I chose the steak, green beans and baked potato for my entree. For dessert they had creme brulee, fruit and a small scoop of ice cream. Very delicious and satisfying. The wedding reception midnight snack was goulash which I had a piece or two of and yum! yum! Service was top notch. We went for 7+ hours. The music/band was great (different review). It was a night to remember. Amazing

It's hard to believe nobody has rated this wonderful hotel. We come here most summers when the…read morehotel is not packed as it is in the peak ski season. As a result, a few of the facilities aren't open, but there are still plenty of things to take advantage of. The staff is wonderful and they deal well with stupid Americans like me that only sprechen a few words of German. The restaurant has an incredible breakfast buffet and serves excellent, tasty meals. My wife has very specific requirements for her food and the cooks do a wonderful job of adjusting to her requirements. You can rent bicycles or walk into the lovely altstadt just a few blocks up the road. There are tennis courts, a pool, a sauna, and just about all the comforts you would want in a summer visit. Want a massage? They can do that, too. Almost all rooms have a balcony with great views of the valley and mountains. Some of these balconies can be quite spacious. Like many hotels in this part of the world there is no air conditioning (except in the dining room), but that generally is not a problem even on the occasional warm day. Ask the front desk for a room fan - between circulating the air and cracking the door to the balcony, the air is dry enough to make a difference when needed. It cools down rapidly at night.

I was really torn about reviewing this place. I received a birthday gift from my colleagues for…read morethis place so we booked to go and check it out. It's been around in the same family since the 60's and it's a small but beautiful hotel. There are some 14-16 rooms and a restaurant. We had booked for a long weekend package which includes breakfast, two normal dinners and a gourmet dinner. The rooms are fabulous and spacious and well appointed. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Mr and Mrs Maier run the place and Johanna is the head chef at the restaurant. She used to have two Michelin starts and 19 Gault Millau points and was at one time the highest rated female chef in Austria. I believe they have given all that up now and run and nice luxurious place with decent food. Breakfasts were very well done and you basically chose from a menu and things arrived one by one. Dinner was a daily affair and whatever was available in the market or at the hotel. Food was generally good and I enjoyed most of it. Some of it was very bland and the vegetarian choices lacked some creativity. I would come here again. It's cosy, beautiful and has great friendly service. A highlight in Filzmoos. You can just book to come and stay one night or book packages which include dinner and so on. You can also just come here for dinner if you so choose. Tip: try their huge selection of schnapps, excellent :-)

We just spent a week at Sonne for the SECOND year in a row! When you find a good thing, you stick…read morewith it! We so enjoyed our stay at this lovely apparthotel. The rooms are well equipped and clean, and the staff is always courteous, friendly, and willing to help with any need/desire. They offer a selection of room types - hotel or apartment (with mini kitchen), sleeping varying numbers of guests. The location is ideal - Obertauern, rated the "snowiest" place in Austria, cannot be beat. Even the NY Times noticed (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/29/travel/skiing-the-alps-austria-winter.html)! Owned by the Grillitsch family, the team goes out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Goran would drive our group to the lift, a mere 3 minutes away and pick everyone up. Afternoon snacks of either a dessert or stew were always a welcome treat. I am marking this as moderate, since compared to the resorts in the US, Sonne and the ski experience (lift, lessons, restaurants) are a deal ... you get so much more than you'd ever get in the US. Go there - you'll love it. The US ski resorts could learn a thing or two (or more!) from this resort town.
