We stayed at Hotel Le Colombier last month, on a Saturday night during the Christmas markets, peak busy season for the small city of Colmar. It was a centrally located four-star hotel, and we paid a ridiculous amount for an okay room. I'm guessing the rates are much lower the rest of the year, more in keeping with the actual quality of the hotel.
Not that the place wasn't fine. It was clean and reasonably attractive, and we got a big room with a living area, so my mom and I could maybe escape my children after they went to bed. No door, so we were only moderately successful, but we were able to share the bottle of champagne that awaited us when we arrived (though I did open it wrong and spill about half of it in my lap). My three-year-old rampaged after a cursed five-minute power nap on the couch, and when he finally went down, I slept curled up on the lower half of the king bed we all shared, for fear of waking him up. I can't say whether the bed was comfortable or not under ordinary conditions. The bathroom wasn't especially pretty or updated.
Our room was actually in a separate building from the lobby, across a high-traffic cobblestone alley and up an unfortunate set of stairs. We got help taking our luggage up, but were on our own going down, though I guess someone would've helped us if called. The lobby and main entrance were on Rue de la Poissonnerie, a very convenient location in old-town Colmar.
The lobby was nice. Check-in and check-out were easy, the staff friendly and accommodating. They tried very hard to procure us a cab with car seats to take us to the train station when we left (no dice, but the walk wasn't bad, even with two kids and luggage). There was complimentary hot wine set out for the taking, a lovely touch. Breakfast was good too, a buffet situation included with our stay. The kids had pancakes and their choice of pastries, and I enjoyed some great apricot yogurt and soft cheeses, as well as a slice of Germanic raisin-studded cake/bread.
If you're looking for a comfortable place to stay in Colmar, you could do worse than Hotel Le Colombier. The location is good, and the rack rate probably in keeping with the rest of the town. Just expect to pay out the nose on Christmas market weekends. read more
