Guess you have to stay here long, to really understand what happens. All this has an influence on you as a visitor. Uno Hotel is in the absolut center of Catania and it is also there you find the interesting places there are. It puts up itself as a luxurious hotel, but it is not. The facilities are very good, but the staff is disturbingly provincial, with one exception. The breakfast is not worthy a hotel of this caliber and evening dinner is poor. Among other things because there are people hanging around the tables for no reason, that you expect to find in cheeper bars or plain pubs. We hade to make some complains while staying there and they were immediately followed up by a reduction in price. Catania is a loner missing in charm. Not very easy to run a hotel even if you try.

The hotel is located on Villa Etnea which is a main street in the City. On Villa Etnea you will find high end stores, local shops, cafes and wine bars. The rooftop bar called Café Etnea in the Una Hotel Roma. The rooftop provided a view of the city and the dining area was open to the exterior by French doors. The bar features a happy hour for 10 euro which affords you one cocktail and all you can eat of the appetizer buffet. Included in the appetizer buffet were charcuterie, marinated artichokes and olives, arancini, caponata, bruschetta, flatbreads, and quiche. Due to the unlimited buffet, this served as more than just cocktail time for us but dinner as well. You definitely can't beat this deal for an evening out in the city. The bar was beautifully decorated and provided amazing ambiance for an evening out. The staff was friendly and accommodating. And the food and drinks were good. This was a girls' night out for us but this is perfect for a date night.

This hotel does not respect your privacy ! I had a 4 night stay with a travel group I was with. First night I asked for a DO NOT DISTURB sign I can place on my door. I told the front desk I did not want room service during my stay. When I returned to my room on the second day, someone had come into my room, moved everything around, and touched everything I had. I complained to the the front desk, that my do not disturb sign was on my door and someone came in anyway. This happened 2 out of the 3 nights I was there. When I complained to the manager and the front desk, they refused to take any responsibility. They treated me like I was a complete idiot, and didn't know how to put a do not disturb sign on a door. They had every excuse, like someone walked by my room and turned the notice around. They refused to take any responsibility or offer an apology. I told them I was going to write a yelp review, and they couldn't care less.

Location is convenient to…read moreairport shuttle bus, fish market, main shopping streets, and is about a 15 minute walk to bus / train stations. Friendly service from all staff. Very good value. In particular the included breakfast was excellent. There were tables inside and on a terrace. Extensive choice of foods and drinks at the buffet. Drip coffee available and coffee on order (eg espresso) offered also. Meats, eggs, fruits, cereals, milk (cow and soy), juices, yogurts, cheeses, breads, pastries... Our room faced a quiet inner courtyard. The ceiling was high with unique painting and other decor. Bathroom was new and clean. Internet (over Wi-Fi) worked very well. The hotel arranged us a car ride from the airport, and said we could pay by credit card. Car was there as scheduled, with a very competent tattooed female driver who got us to the hotel through a complex series of non-main roads with interesting local urban scenery. When we went to pay, the driver could not take credit card herself but had to go to the hotel front desk... we just paid cash to make it easy. TIP: if going to/from the bus or train station with luggage, there is a little-used bike trail along one street that is very easy for wheeled luggage -- unlike the dirty and "curby" parallel streets. When using Google Maps walking directions, it is the route that goes down Via Giovanni di Prima -- which by chance includes one block where the street has been named after Tony Curtis (Via Antonio de Curtis).

They offer a variety of fruits (peach, apple, etc) and small yogurt. That's all I ate. They have cereal, bread, milk, and other things. SHARED BATHROOM - The female bathroom down the hall looks a little worn down and could use some renovation. It also lacks ventilation. - After one showers, there is no where fast way for the hot air to pass through other than opening the entry door. - The curtains were cheap and do not provide full coverage. - There wasn't side chairs or enough wall hooks to put away your items. ROOM - I stayed in the 8-bed female dorm. Quite Spacious. - I like that each bunk bed comes with a 2-port USB outlet and curtain. - The beds are covered with a black plastic film. I was lucky enough to have an unoccupied single bed in the room, so I slept on that, instead of the bunk bed. (I think I was less restless than any other hostel bed I slept on within Italy) - This room has 2 balconies so you will hear noise from the busy square. - The lockers come with a keyed lock. And there are 2 shelves. - It was difficult to find a wall outlet. Not sure how many there are in the room. The roof terrace offers good views. There is a bar there. You can see part of Mount Etna. It's the highlight of the hostel. I wasn't sure if there is an elevator but you have to walk 2 or 3 levels of stairs. It's a 15-minute walk from the Catania Centrale Train station. There is a kitchen with a fridge, so I'm sure you can cook.

It had been over five years since my last stay in one, so this was a bit of a shock. I don't think I really have the right personality for sleeping with strangers. I had some random girl above me in a bunk-bed format (she seemed nice, but it was still too weird for me!), and there's no privacy aside from a curtain that you can put up around your bed. Unless, of course, you book a private room....which I should have done! Shared bathrooms are down the hall. For a hostel, they're quite clean and tidy. They even stock hair dryers! Many of the budget properties we stayed in this month did NOT have such lush accommodations. A light breakfast is included in the rate, but you do need to pay 2 euro to rent a towel. You'll get a locker for your belongings. Staff here was very friendly. One of the current staffers is even from Philly! Keep in mind that this hostel is situated right on the main square in Catania. You'll have beautiful views from their rooftop terrace, but you'll also deal with a crapton of noise in the middle of the night. Bring earplugs. I'd always prefer a hotel to a hostel, but if you're trying to keep to a budget, this property is a good option in Catania.
