Would you pay $200+ for a 170 square foot room?
Tripadvisor reviews rated this place in the top 10 of the several hundred hotels in Zurich, with the hotels rated higher much higher in price.
We were attracted by the proximity to the main train station - an 8 minute walk, and the hot cooked daily breakfast free to hotel guests.
We found the best prices through www.booking.com, and made reservations three months in advance for five nights May 14-19. Rained at night most evenings during our stay.
Tiny lounge with bathrooms for those who get here before their rooms are ready.
We left SFO at 530pm, and arrived at Frankfurt at 1pm the following day, before getting a connecting flight to Zurich, arriving at 4pm.
Costs chf 70 cash for taxi, chf 34 for uber, or chf 10 for train to go from the Zurich airport to the hotel. If you are going by train, got to be able pull your luggage 0.4 miles to the hotel over numerous tam tracks and cobblestones, but won't have to lug the luggage up stairs.
There is a single elevator, and it can hold a maximum of 4 adults without luggage, or 2 adults with overhead bin luggage. or 1 adult and 2 oversized luggage.
Four floors, with the fourth floor being tiny single rooms with slanted ceilings due to the roof incline.
Our third floor room was 12' x10' two twin beds on either side. Separate modern 5' x 10' bathroom, with shower and a towel warmer to dry wet towels.
The shower stall is quite decent 5'x 4'.
No carpets so you can hear footfalls from the people above. Comes with an electronic safe. Dorm size refrigerator stocked with complimentary beer and soft drinks.
No microwave oven, no closet, and no dresser. The blackout curtains over the two windows have large gaps on the sides. No AC.
Two double pane windows open up to the street below, the major thoroughfare for pedestrians in old town Zurich. You are within 1 block of literally dozens of restaurants, useful in early May when it rains most nights.
Desk offers free vouchers for the Kunstadt Museum, which is free on Wednesdays for a portion of the museum.
Last day of my stay had to get toilet money from the front desk, as automated public toilets in Zurich cost chf 1 in the parks, and chf 1.5 chf in the train stations. Exact coin change only.
Lots of street noise, and on Friday and Saturday nights, you'll hear the drunks boisterous yelling well into 2am or 3am, when the bars finally close. Not as much a problem for us seniors with declining hearing, plus we were suffering from major jet lag the entire stay due to the 9 hour time change.
One of those hotels when you should get a discount for a street view, and pay a surcharge for a garden view. read more
