    Hotel Doña María -- storefront
    L L.

Doña María was mentioned in a travel review of best Sevilla hotels by the Telegraph, & Samantha Brown featured it in an episode. So I had it on my radar. The hotel is named after the great-aunt of the current owner, the Marquise de San Joaquin. The location, the boutiquie charm, & the smaller number of rooms, are all key for me. It came down to a choice between Amadeus, Las Casas de la Juderia, & Doña María. The Marquise won! Others mentioned Alfonso XIII (which was $600/night in off-season when I booked), & Hotel 1800 (still a little more expensive), but valuewise, Doña María was it for us. No other property in Seville has a rooftop bar with a view like Doña María. The bar itself is a locals & tourist destination, just for the view. There is also a rooftop pool, adjacent to the bar. (Doña María has another cocktail bar just off the lobby.) Our room had the toile beadspread & princess canopy they advertise in photos. Not my style, but a cool nod to the aristocratic theme, & connections of the owner's family. The bathroom was marble, clean, somewhat spacious, & had a full tub, which was great. We were on the 4th floor, but did not hear any noise from the rooftop bar (even on the weekend before Carnival), nor the church bells, which others have mentioned. The Telegraph reported that "Each of the 62 rooms is named after a famous female figure from Seville's long history - Roman, Jewish, Moorish or Christian - and guests are presented with a charming book featuring all their stories." But we never got any such book. Admittedly, I forgot to ask. So remember to request it for more cool history. It probably would have better explained the toile in our room... after someone from the 18thC, I bet. Hotel Doña María is owned by a Marquess, & sits on the site of a casa palacio owned by Samuel Levi, treasurer to King Pedro (the king who built the Alcazar). One detail I liked immediately when researching this hotel, is that it is filled with hundreds of years of family-owned antiques, collections, & artwork, all displayed throughout the lobby. It was very fun to look at everything, especially the antique silk fan collection, & the handmade lanterns on the walls (now retrofitted with lightbulbs). The lobby is gorgeous, & very welcoming. Doña María is in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, the former Jewish quarter, from the Medieval city. This neighborhood is where all the current action is, both for locals & tourists alike. On Sat night, this is where the jet set dresses up to go out to dinner & bar hop. Doña María sits on the corner of Plaza de la Virgen de Los Reyes, with direct views of the Seville Cathedral & la Giralda (both, lit up at night). The Alcazar is just across the plaza. It is a short walk to all the hottest restaurants, & just around the corner from famous Taberna Álvaro Peregil (for vino naranja). Reviews warned ahead about the "cold" demeanor of the front desk. It was just a very city attitude, with a little posturing, perhaps, but nothing particular to Sevilla nor Doña María. Annoying, & drives people away, but that's the city. We stayed on the weekend before Carnival, so rates were higher. Many hotels, like ours, were booked with Spanish yupsters coming to the city, either to visit family, or find a party. This hotel has a bit of a see-and-be-seen crowd, always amusing to watch. The kids that hang out at the rooftop bar are local Millennials, who have decided to roost here on Friday & Saturday nights. I read complaints about the 16€ breakfast. Of the 4 hotels we stayed at in Spain, & 1 hotel in Portugal, this was a pretty standard rate. If you don't like it, get some groceries the night before (there are two grocery stores a short walk from this hotel), & stick them in your mini fridge so you can have baguette, jamón ibérico, & cheese the next morning for WAY CHEAP (like 4€). Spainsh peach juice is delicious, & is 1,30€ for 4 servings (or more), also at the grocery store. Or, if you are big on breakfast, go out to a proper restaurant. Hotel "spreads" for breakfast are often a joke anyway. Euro hotels 20yrs ago always included "Continental breakfast," but those days are over. Now American economy inns include it, & EU doesn't. Oh well, it's breakfast, I normally skip it anyway. * * * TIP * * * Free champagne at rooftop bar when you book through hotel website! * * * TIP * * * Elevator accommodates 4ppl MAX, & usually not that many. 2ppl with 4 suitcases will exceed limit. * * * TIP * * * While reviewers have bragged about the view, most rooms in this hotel (like many city properties) lack a view. Think about it structurally, there is only so much street-front space. On the ground floor, that part's all lobby, on the 4th floor, it's all rooftop bar, therefore, you have 3 floors (remember floor 1 is what Americans call floor 2) with potential street-front views of the cathedral, but most of the hotel is side & back rooms. Expect not to have a view, unless specified, when booking.

I love this hotel's location because it is just a stone's throw away from Seville Cathedral. Since Sevilla is a walking city, I felt confident getting lost in its streets because I just had to look for the Cathedral's tower (Giralda) and walk towards it to find my way back to the hotel. The negative side, though, was the ringing of the church bells from early morning till midnight. I didn't mind it so much though because I thought it added to the charm of the place. We stayed at a room with a view of the Cathedral from our balcony. The room looked dated but was clean. Free wifi. The bathroom was small and sometimes it took a few minutes for the water heater to kick in. Housekeeping came in every day even though we left the do not disturb sign every morning. Front desk personnel helped us make reservation to see a Flamenco show. They were helpful in giving us directions on where we wanted to go. The hotel map was helpful and easy to follow. Around the corner from the hotel is Mateos Gago which is lined with restaurants/tapas bars and souvenir shops. There's even a convenience store down the road where I was able to buy an adaptor for my curling iron for less than 5euros. It's also where we bought water, soda, and late night munchies. Dona Maria is also just steps away from Alcazar of Seville. Plaza Nueva is just a short easy walk away. Dona Maria's location can't be beat!

Hotel Dona Maria is centrally located to top sights in Seville.

If you are looking for a hotel in a great location to see the sights of Seville, then this is a great option. My wife and I stayed there for three days and were very happy. Yes, you hear the church bells (and I'm someone who gets easily annoyed with noisy hotels) but I slept very well here, and I could see the church bells from our room.

Amazing view and service! Highly recommended. A bit hard to find as are all the great places in this neighborhood.

We could watch the processions leaving the cathedral from the rooftop terrace when our feet hurt from walking.

We dropped off our rental at the airport and hopped on the bus that took you into the city. We got off at the San Sebastian stop and walked with our suitcases a few blocks up to the hotel. I also liked that it was walking distance from many of the sights we wanted to check out. We were able to walk to a Flamenco show, the Real Alcazar and the Cathedral. We also took some scooters to Plaza España. The hotel itself was more so a blocks of rooms in a neighborhood square connected with a labyrinth of courtyards and gardens. The rooftop was really neat, too. There are different levels where you can lay out in the sun near people or more privately. There is a pool that looked neat but we didn't have enough time to get in before our show. The hotel itself is clearly very old (by American standards at least) but well preserved and beautiful. The hotel piano bar in the second floor is a must see, too. Don't miss it! The rooms were surprisingly modern. The bathroom was very spacious. The bed was a little firmer than I would have liked but it wasn't a deal breaker by any means. I would definitely stay at this hotel again!

I was grateful for the valet parking, not so much by the €25 a day charge. The building itself seems to be a collection of buildings spread around a number of internal and external courtyards. Our room was accessible via a long and twisty underground tunnel that stretched for at least 300m passing the spa, various bric a brac bits and pieces, statues, fountains, peculiar display areas that may, or may not, have been shops or small boutiques. I've no idea. It's almost impossible to describe how bizarre and yet how charming it all was. After a while, though, I have to confess it became a bit of a schlepp. Our room was small but the bed was extremely comfortable with a queen size bed and a decent sized, well provisioned, en-suite bathroom. A piano bar on the first floor was both elegant and comfortable and we repaired there each evening after dinner in one of the fabulous restaurants within walking distance. The hotel also opened out onto a small plaza with plenty of outdoor bar and coffee options throughout the day and into the night. A couple of minutes away was the Cathedral and Alcazar as were numerous shops, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours (a must). I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a stay in Seville but leave the car at home,

It was very convenient to take in the sights of the Espana Plaza. Other sites and restaurants are anywhere from a one to fifteen minutes walk away depending on what your interests are. The breakfast in the hotel is awesome as there are many options to choose from hot/cold options, various breads/pastries and various fruits/vegetables. The only disappointment we experienced at the Melia Sevilla Hotel was in the onsite restaurant, Quimera for dinner. Although the food is very good, their spontaneous appetizer option was offered in a forced payment manner. The first visit for dinner we were served croquettes by a waiter as a complimentary appetizer and we said we ordered croquettes, he stated these are complimentary. However, on the bill there was a $7.50 charge for 3 small croquettes that we did not request as we had placed an order of croquettes as part of our dinner option in which we received six in the dinner order. Ok, you thought we would have learned our lesson and we did. On our second visit for dinner, another friend joined us who accepted a piece of bread, but the three of us from the previous visit stated we didn't want bread as we ordered dinner options that included bread "chicken and waffles"...which are by the way very good. Again when the bill came, we were charged $10.00 as if each person received bread although only one person accepted "a" piece of bread from the waiter. We could understand if they placed a bread basket on the table with enough bread for each person to charge each person for bread "provided." But NO, they have a RIDICULOUS policy that if one person receives one piece of bread from the waiter, they charge the entire party for a piece of bread. We are so grateful that our fourth guest refused the "FORCED APPETIZER" due to the waiter literally plopping the appetizer onto the table without us asking for it and describing it as spicy which our guest does not like. Therefore, the waiter retrieved the appetizer from the table and no additional fee was charged this time as the rest of the party also refused the "FORCED APPETIZERS." Unfortunately, on our last evening in town, we declined to dine in the Quimera restaurant onsite which based on the lateness of the day would have been convenient and we dined elsewhere in the city.
