Off the beaten path doesn't do the locale of this rural gem of a hotel justice. The beaten path that it is off of is rarely travelled to begin with making a stay at the Hotel Diamond a one-of-a-kind, leave your life far behind experience that will stay with you long after you've stayed at it.
Diamond is located in the south eastern corner of Oregon. Dominated by high desert terrain and whole mountains of volcanic rock, the landscape is dramatically open and bare and surprisingly lush at the same time. At a distance, this is dusty desert country, but a closer look reveals an area that is teeming with life.
Towering over this landscape are the imposing Steens mountains, a shelf of jumbled rock that slopes gently up to huge peaks and gorges from the western high desert side and then drops off like a cliff on the low desert eastern side.
This gorgeous and sometimes austere landscape will stay in your imagination for a long time. The absence of people and anything modern will have you feeling that you have not only traveled in space but in time as well.
The Hotel itself is a perfect combination of rustic comforts. The large wooden ranch style home looks like something from a movie set. The rooms are really just rooms of the house retro-fitted to work as hotel accommodations. They're not Four Seasons luxury but that isn't the point of this experience. This a family hotel. Right down to the absolutely gorgeous family style dinners.
The dinners at Hotel Diamond are, arguably, a signature offering. It's the kind of food you'd expect after a community barn raising or a Sunday spent working the farm. Comfort food in huge portions that show off an elaborate love for the guests.
Coming in and out of the hotel dining room during the day will reinforce that as the cooking starts in the morning. The smell of baking bread permeates every corner of the house and is as welcoming a sense as any you'll encounter.
After a day of exploring, hiking, bird watching, hunting or whatever it is you do, a full-on comfort food banquet is just the thing to send you off to bed happy and satiated.
Lunch at the Diamond is equally high on calories and good times. Frazier's serves as a bar and grill on the back side of the hotel, complete with pool table and some of the best hamburgers in Oregon.
Day trips from the hotel are limitless. Drive up one of the rugged Steens mountain road and hike around the rim of the Kiger Gorge with it's stunning views.
On the east side of the mountains you'll find hot springs so isolated that you'll think you've found your own private spa.
The rates are reasonable, especially off-season, and the pre-fixe dinners are an extremely good value. For those that are put-off by sharing food with strangers, however, supper at the Diamond might be a tad uncomfortable as it is served family style to all the guests.
As well, other than driving trips, hikes, dips in the hot springs and general engagement with nature, there aren't any of the traditional vacation amusements. No spas. No movie theaters. No televisions in the rooms. Not making a judgement one way or another about the absence of those comforts and sources of entertainment, but it bears noting lest one thinks they are booking a vacation at an all-inclusive resort.
