This is not the place to go if you are looking for a sports bar and a place with nightlife, but you can create your own. BUT......if you want to get in touch with nature and get away from the hustle & bustle, this is the place to go!! All the food is from scratch and is served family style, and is to die for ....you can eat as much as you want. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. A place not to be missed!!

Off the beaten path doesn't do the locale of this rural gem of a hotel justice. The beaten path that it is off of is rarely travelled to begin with making a stay at the Hotel Diamond a one-of-a-kind, leave your life far behind experience that will stay with you long after you've stayed at it. Diamond is located in the south eastern corner of Oregon. Dominated by high desert terrain and whole mountains of volcanic rock, the landscape is dramatically open and bare and surprisingly lush at the same time. At a distance, this is dusty desert country, but a closer look reveals an area that is teeming with life. Towering over this landscape are the imposing Steens mountains, a shelf of jumbled rock that slopes gently up to huge peaks and gorges from the western high desert side and then drops off like a cliff on the low desert eastern side. This gorgeous and sometimes austere landscape will stay in your imagination for a long time. The absence of people and anything modern will have you feeling that you have not only traveled in space but in time as well. The Hotel itself is a perfect combination of rustic comforts. The large wooden ranch style home looks like something from a movie set. The rooms are really just rooms of the house retro-fitted to work as hotel accommodations. They're not Four Seasons luxury but that isn't the point of this experience. This a family hotel. Right down to the absolutely gorgeous family style dinners. The dinners at Hotel Diamond are, arguably, a signature offering. It's the kind of food you'd expect after a community barn raising or a Sunday spent working the farm. Comfort food in huge portions that show off an elaborate love for the guests. Coming in and out of the hotel dining room during the day will reinforce that as the cooking starts in the morning. The smell of baking bread permeates every corner of the house and is as welcoming a sense as any you'll encounter. After a day of exploring, hiking, bird watching, hunting or whatever it is you do, a full-on comfort food banquet is just the thing to send you off to bed happy and satiated. Lunch at the Diamond is equally high on calories and good times. Frazier's serves as a bar and grill on the back side of the hotel, complete with pool table and some of the best hamburgers in Oregon. Day trips from the hotel are limitless. Drive up one of the rugged Steens mountain road and hike around the rim of the Kiger Gorge with it's stunning views. On the east side of the mountains you'll find hot springs so isolated that you'll think you've found your own private spa. The rates are reasonable, especially off-season, and the pre-fixe dinners are an extremely good value. For those that are put-off by sharing food with strangers, however, supper at the Diamond might be a tad uncomfortable as it is served family style to all the guests. As well, other than driving trips, hikes, dips in the hot springs and general engagement with nature, there aren't any of the traditional vacation amusements. No spas. No movie theaters. No televisions in the rooms. Not making a judgement one way or another about the absence of those comforts and sources of entertainment, but it bears noting lest one thinks they are booking a vacation at an all-inclusive resort. A visit to the Diamond Hotel is a dynamic mix of adventure and comfort in an unforgettable setting. For those searching for a unique weekend getaway, this is it.

This is a friendly family style motel isolated in the heart of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. We were a group of three couples that stayed three nights, partaking of the family style dinner each evening. The dinners were delicious and extremely reasonable. Stay here if you are looking for quiet relaxation. We certainly will be back!

The pictures do not do it justice. The 'cabin' is clean and comfortable. There is plenty of room for 4 guests. The kitchen has everything you need. It was so nice to come back from a day on the playa and take a nice hot shower and have a nice BBQ dinner. Bring enough food because the nearest grocery store is in about 120 miles away. A word to the 'City' folk (like us), this is rural Oregon. The locals out here are honest, friendly people. If you want a good experience, treat them (as you should with everyone) with respect, courtesy and honesty. At the end of the day the real plus was getting to know the owners, John, Cheryl and their two dogs. They are very welcoming and know the area very well.

It was nice to come back from a long day of hunting to an air conditioned cabin. The cabin was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. Nice sized kitchen and the bedrooms were huge! The location couldn't be better, stepped outside and the Steen were right there and gorgeous. Well maintained area. Even though the cabin isn't quite a real "cabin", you wouldn't even know it when you stepped in. Such a great place. The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. They made sure we had anything we needed and they were very friendly! They had two dogs who are too cute for words. Highly recommend staying there, it's worth the trip!

It provides housing, conference facilities and some classes for groups who are doing research, hunting or fishing or touring the Malheur Wildlife Management Area - Steens Mountain and surrounding area. I stayed there as part of a bird photography excursion sponsored by the Klamath Bird Observatory in late April. We were lodged in a duplex with beds, living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. The only items we had to bring were bedding/sleeping bags, towels and food. The units are old but clean. The setting is a few miles from the Malheur Wildlife HQ on flat sandy ground covered in sage brush with a couple of small cinder cones nearby. There is a small but well stocked book/gift store and about 3 miles away is a gas station/café/saloon/market/RV park. The Station is isolated; at night all we heard were the wind and an owl; the sky was full of stars. (Astronomy buffs also come here.) The wildlife viewing opportunities are fantastic: over 120 bird species rmigrate through the area; plus you can see the residents that include golden eagles, sage grouse, ravens, prairie falcons, harriers, Am. coots (of course) and many other birds. There are antelope, mule deer, coyotes, rabbits, ground squirrels, wild horse herds and other mammals and reptiles in the area, and streams and lakes for fishing. If you want to experience the outdoors where there are very few other people but lots of wildlife and exceptional scenery, Malheur is ideal. (If you don't want to cook dinner see the reviews for Diamond Hotel--its about 45 min. away from the station.)

And the staff are really nice and helpful. Very friendly people everywhere we went this weekend. It was pretty busy for 2 in the afternoon on a Friday but it really wasn't a long wait. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and the chicken finger "burger" and two milkshakes (blackberry and marshmallow). Little did we know that we could have shared one milkshake, whoops! These came out first which was nice, since it was almost 90 out. There is only seating outside it seems (unless there was a closed indoor area I didn't know about) but there are quite a few tables. Nice to watch and see all the different travelers that make their way here. There's even a sign in book at the cash register, we saw names that day from Austria! The marshmallow was delicious but trying to eat it all myself was too much, became too sweet after awhile. The blackberry was actually pretty bland and the vanilla ice cream overpowered it. However, the burgers were good, juicy burgers. Just what I was looking for. Husband didn't enjoy his as much as I did mine. The ketchup dispenser inside was malfunctioning and I ended up with a lot of ketchup, but most of it wasn't on the burger haha! Also, I noticed later that technically my chips were expired since 12/2024. No, they didn't taste expired and no, I didn't get sick. They're pretty well preserved haha.

Our room had a small bed, a nightstand, one chair and a tiny table, but that was fine. We didn't expect luxury. The problem was with the noise at night. We could clearly hear our neighbors' conversation while they were speaking at a normal level. We could hear their VERY loud sink and toilet. We felt as though we knew them through personally after listening to a Skype chat between them and their elderly mother. But the worst part was that their heater was so loud that it made my brain shake. We didn't even use ours because it sounded like a freight train, but we could still hear our neighbor's heater. Also, housekeeping opened my hotel door without knocking, which was very uncool. I was still in bed. The pillows are just terrible. They're flat and hard. You might want to bring your own.
