Pretty much one of the only few gas stations near the Alvord Desert where you can fuel up your vehicle, load up on ice, drinks, and snacks. While you're at it get yourself a cheeseburger and a milk shake. This is pump-it-yourself old school station so remember how much you're pumped (gallons) then proceed to go inside to pay. Since we were here during the COVID pandemic they only allow one person per party enter the general store. Giving this place 4 stars as the buns on our burgers were pretty hard and burnt but others it's better than what you'd expect out in the sticks.

Killer grilled cheese sammies! Kinda pricey tho. Guessing that's due to the isolation of the place.

Since…read morecamping in the dust did not appeal to us ladies, we decided to take it up a notch and stay at the Steens Country Cabin. I really can't say enough good things about this place. The pictures do not do it justice. The 'cabin' is clean and comfortable. There is plenty of room for 4 guests. The kitchen has everything you need. It was so nice to come back from a day on the playa and take a nice hot shower and have a nice BBQ dinner. Bring enough food because the nearest grocery store is in about 120 miles away. A word to the 'City' folk (like us), this is rural Oregon. The locals out here are honest, friendly people. If you want a good experience, treat them (as you should with everyone) with respect, courtesy and honesty. At the end of the day the real plus was getting to know the owners, John, Cheryl and their two dogs. They are very welcoming and know the area very well.

It was nice to come back from a long day of hunting to an air conditioned cabin. The cabin was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. Nice sized kitchen and the bedrooms were huge! The location couldn't be better, stepped outside and the Steen were right there and gorgeous. Well maintained area. Even though the cabin isn't quite a real "cabin", you wouldn't even know it when you stepped in. Such a great place. The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. They made sure we had anything we needed and they were very friendly! They had two dogs who are too cute for words. Highly recommend staying there, it's worth the trip!

We had dinner at the hotel both nights of our stay and to say the food was abundant would be an understatement. The meal, served family style, was so good you kept eating even though you knew you were full. The first night of our stay we had BBQ ribs and chile relleno casserole along with an assortment of cooked vegetables and homemade bread and if that wasn't enough, dessert was a homemade bread pudding. The second night we had meatballs, mashed potatoes with cabbage, cooked vegetables and homemade bread. Having learned my lesson the night before, and not being a fan of ground meat of any kind, I took a pass on the meatballs and just had potatoes and vegetables for my dinner. It was more than sufficient, but then came dessert again. This time buttermilk pie. I had never heard of buttermilk pie before...kind of like a custard pie...and I have to say it was quite good. I manage to eat about three bites of it before I had to declare myself full and leave it to our friend to finish. This is truly the kind of place that I envision when I read western stories and was a wonderful setting for our visit to the Steens.

Our room had a small bed, a nightstand, one chair and a tiny table, but that was fine. We didn't expect luxury. The problem was with the noise at night. We could clearly hear our neighbors' conversation while they were speaking at a normal level. We could hear their VERY loud sink and toilet. We felt as though we knew them through personally after listening to a Skype chat between them and their elderly mother. But the worst part was that their heater was so loud that it made my brain shake. We didn't even use ours because it sounded like a freight train, but we could still hear our neighbor's heater. Also, housekeeping opened my hotel door without knocking, which was very uncool. I was still in bed. The pillows are just terrible. They're flat and hard. You might want to bring your own. The linens are thick and have the cheap linen crunch.

It's the perfect place for a long weekend of soaking up the beauty of Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Harney County Oregon. The bird watching is amazing. Wildlife is plentiful. After a long day of exploring the landscape, sit down for a family style home cooked meal at Frenchglen Hotel. Be sure to go hungry because you will leave full & satified. A nice place to stay with wonderful owners.

She didn't have a mask though, somewhat discourteous. We had driven as far as we wanted on a dark, lengthy interstate and this was a nice place to stay for the night. All and all, it was a pleasant experience. It had all that was needed. Now for some criticisms- The hotel room smelled very clean, as clean sheets should, but there were a few small hairs on nearly every linen we found. The towels, sheets, pillow cases, and so we ended up remaking the bed with our own sheets and pillows. We hardly looked for dirt/hairs too. The washing machine and dryer traps may be dirty. The shower and room had a few stains, and needs to look less old and dated to get a perfect review. The remote for the TV was missing from the room as well after a quick search, and the TV could not be programmed manually. We could of called the front desk, but we just turned the TV off. All the shampoos and soaps were small little packets. Sterile but somewhat tacky. The handles on many drawers were broken, and the carpet was stained too. So that was unattractive. The door had a lot of space, so insulation was poor. It was cold in the room. But there was a heater if needed. Kinda loud. Everything else seemed to be in good condition for a quick stay!

It provides housing, conference facilities and some classes for groups who are doing research, hunting or fishing or touring the Malheur Wildlife Management Area - Steens Mountain and surrounding area. I stayed there as part of a bird photography excursion sponsored by the Klamath Bird Observatory in late April. We were lodged in a duplex with beds, living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. The only items we had to bring were bedding/sleeping bags, towels and food. The units are old but clean. The setting is a few miles from the Malheur Wildlife HQ on flat sandy ground covered in sage brush with a couple of small cinder cones nearby. There is a small but well stocked book/gift store and about 3 miles away is a gas station/café/saloon/market/RV park. The Station is isolated; at night all we heard were the wind and an owl; the sky was full of stars. (Astronomy buffs also come here.) The wildlife viewing opportunities are fantastic: over 120 bird species rmigrate through the area; plus you can see the residents that include golden eagles, sage grouse, ravens, prairie falcons, harriers, Am. coots (of course) and many other birds. There are antelope, mule deer, coyotes, rabbits, ground squirrels, wild horse herds and other mammals and reptiles in the area, and streams and lakes for fishing. If you want to experience the outdoors where there are very few other people but lots of wildlife and exceptional scenery, Malheur is ideal. (If you don't want to cook dinner see the reviews for Diamond Hotel--its about 45 min. away from the station.)
