I ventured out to the Alvord Desert to experience Land Sailing with my husband and friends. Since camping in the dust did not appeal to us ladies, we decided to take it up a notch and stay at the Steens Country Cabin. I really can't say enough good things about this place. The pictures do not do it justice. The 'cabin' is clean and comfortable. There is plenty of room for 4 guests. The kitchen has everything you need. It was so nice to come back from a day on the playa and take a nice hot shower and have a nice BBQ dinner. Bring enough food because the nearest grocery store is in about 120 miles away. A word to the 'City' folk (like us), this is rural Oregon. The locals out here are honest, friendly people. If you want a good experience, treat them (as you should with everyone) with respect, courtesy and honesty. At the end of the day the real plus was getting to know the owners, John, Cheryl and their two dogs. They are very welcoming and know the area very well. read more

Stayed here on a recent hunting trip in the Steen's mountains and wow, what a great place! The cabin is huge! Tons of room and well decorated. It was nice to come back from a long day of hunting to an air conditioned cabin. The cabin was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. Nice sized kitchen and the bedrooms were huge! The location couldn't be better, stepped outside and the Steen were right there and gorgeous. Well maintained area. Even though the cabin isn't quite a real "cabin", you wouldn't even know it when you stepped in. Such a great place. The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. They made sure we had anything we needed and they were very friendly! They had two dogs who are too cute for words. Highly recommend staying there, it's worth the trip! read more

The 'cabin' is an attachment on the side of a two story pole building, but it is very clean. The 'commanding' view, mostly gravel parking lot and road, one small window you can see the mountains...no desert view. There is not much around for services, small store & gas 15 miles, Frenchglen 50 miles. We had problems with the owner, at one point he went ballistic and we were worried for our safety. I think this place is OK for hunters where they can take their weapons inside with them for possible protection. read more

My husband has camped on the Alvord Desert for years to go landsailing with buddies, and usually it is a dusty, windy, roughing-it experience. This time we went with another couple, and wanted a little more creature comfort. The pictures don't do this place justice. It is a spacious cabin (yes, attached to a shop but the idea is to get out and explore) with everything you need. We are in the queen bed room with a tempurpedic style mattress - super comfortable. It is nicely decorated, there are plenty of towels, even ones designated for the hot springs, soap, shampoo, all the things we packed just in case. Heck, there is even a window AC unit! I was expecting a glamping experience, but this is on par with a great vacation condo. Would it be nice if the windows facing the Steens were bigger? Sure, but from the kitchen table you have two views, and back bedroom also has multiple windows. The owners were quick to answer any questions before we arrived about amenities - if you have any doubts check ahead of time - you may not need to pack as much as you think (e.g. aforementioned towels). After six nights here in the area, we have really gotten to know the area and the folks that live around here. Between the campers and the locals, we have experienced and heard great stories about the hospitality. We went home with great stories and experiences. read more
