Botel - I'd say sterile, but that'd imply it was clean, by no means was it

Botel

Ok Chad must work for botel to write such a gleaming review on such a lodging scam, since when was…read morea cinder block room 10'x10' with a non functional air conditioner, noisy surroundings (expected), severely decayed shower, sink with a trash can under the drain to catch the leaking water, shower that has consistently inconsistent temperature, an owner too cheap to get even basic ikea items like a bath mat and in the end have the nerve to charge $300 for a room or $100 a night for a shared dorm a "deal", if you plan well you can get your share in a house for less than that. This hotel is a scam of epidemic proportions. People will pay for mediocrity, so why try aanything else.

Some facts about Botel: 1. It is constructed completely out…read moreof cinderblocks. That includes the inside of your room, which might remind you of your dorm room in college, but with less personality or comfort. 2. Even though the Botel is a couple years old, it looks and functions like a 60s-era motel, with attendant rust stains. 3. They aren't big on privacy at the Botel. Like most Fire Island hotels, the bathroom is shared, which is expected. But your room may or may not have a lock with a key. If it does have a key, you might find your door opened anyway by another befuddled guest who was given the same key to the same room. In fact, the door to your room might not even close all the way. And if it does, someone might wander in and then try to suavely pretend that is normal and, "Nope, don't need anything, bye." 4. Your manager will claim this is not a big deal, because everyone is cool here. Residents of the island claim that stuff gets stolen from the Botel all the time. Who to believe? Nothing was taken from our room, but maybe that's because we left all of our valuables at a friend's house. 5. The beds are pretty comfortable and big. 6. The club gets quiet at 10, so thumping house won't be a problem. I'm not giving this place a one star, because I'm sure many people arrive and all they want is a place to pass out after partying until 6 am, and don't mind strangers wandering in and out. No hate on that, do your thing, but if you're wondering why this place is $100 cheaper than everything else, that's why. If you're looking to save a buck but want comfort/privacy, try AirBnB and Craigslist.

I'm hoping this is the right place to review the location is not accurate and the name is slightly…read moreoff. Also, am I the first person to review since the aughts? Is this a case of What happens on Fire Island stays on Fire Island? Well, its called the Grove Hotel now and the Ice Palace is still going strong. First well discuss the accommodations and then the infamous Ice Palace. The hotel "is what it is". Its a perfect place to throw your shit (have a few pre-party drinks), shower off the sand and rocks from your body and sleep. Its not luxurious accommodations by any stretch, nor does it aim to be. The place is the definition of beach-y. I love the wooden plank floors and the slightly aged pain on the exterior. All i have to say is that the A/C worked the mirrors behind the bed gave it this whole tacky late 70s vibe (I'm sure the place's heyday). As far as the staff they were ok. I didn't get the whole $10 deposit thing for your room key until after a day at the beach nearly made me loose not only trusty cap but my cute MJ sunglasses. I didn't get the whole having to go the front desk for ice thing though. I'm like are you monitoring my drinking? Are you trying to get me to go to the Ice Palace do do all of my imbibing. If so, I would go gladly. I liked it. It was a great be achy (i'm using that word again) joint: a nightclub where people came in shorts and their flip-flops and it was actually acceptable. We saw the Porsche show and the Taylor "Hardcore" show. Both were great we sat cabaret style and had way too many of their mudslides. The bartenders outshine the hotel staff. Then we stayed for the under ware party which was fun (i don't want to tell you how many mudslides it took to get me to go out nearly naked). It was a fun time all over. Didn't do the pool b/c for most of the day it was more occupied and at capacity than i like. I traded that experience in for wide open space at the beach. Seriously the water was cool but there were few people out there. All in all i can't wait to go back. I'll go during off season though, b.c the prices (for weekend stays) are way too high. This time i stayed during the week the 2nd weekend in June and it was very cheap. Actually most Motel 6's are more expensive and i bet they don't have a beach a block away and easy access to Mud-slides.

The size of the room was nice and good view. The cleaning wasn't perfection/spotless, but it was…read moredecent. I will say don't get a room on the side with the pool. It can be loud due the pool or the bar at night. No Netflix. The staff were very nice. Allen was great when checking in. Everyone was friendly. Overall, we were comfortable.

Belvedere Guest House - Horrible room view of old pool & junk

Visible from a distance, The Belvedere Guest House stands out in Cherry Grove -- a beautiful eclectic castle. The interior matches the exterior charm -- various hallways and staircases and corners to get lost in. The rooms are all different from each other -- each with its own unique theme. There are a variety of room options -- from single rooms with shared bathrooms -- to luxury rooms with balconies overlooking the bay. I stayed in what they call a standard room -- it was cozy with its own bathroom, mini-fridge, and television. It was steps from the pool and Jacuzzi. The pool is not heated, but of course the Jacuzzi is -- a great place to mingle and meet other guests. There is also an outdoor gym and an outdoor shower. I particularly enjoyed the top floor of the property -- accessible only through a spiral staircase -- its quiet and peaceful with an outdoor deck and stunning views of the bay. It's a good place to curl up and read a book, or get to know a new friend more intimately (as seems to be encouraged by the porn-playing television). The entire property is clothing optional, but at least on this off season weekend, it was far more leisurely than lascivious. And while the property is generally only open to men -- this weekend it was open to everyone. The Belvedere would be a great choice on these weekends for anyone who wants to unwind, relax, and just be themselves. My only very minor complaint was the heat in the room and property -- on a relatively cold weekend, it was a bit chilly throughout the property, and while my room did have heat, it wasn't quite enough to warm it up properly. But other than that, I found the room, as well as the property clean and well maintained. The staff was cordial and friendly, but not intrusive. And there was coffee/tea and breakfast-type muffins, danishes, etc. available in the morning. None of it is fancy, but this isn't a 5 star midtown Manhattan hotel - The Belvedere doesn't advertise itself that way. It's a guest house on Fire Island -- a very good one.

Staff were super friendly and relaxed giving guest that island vibe. The guest house is well located and extenuates the community feel of Cherry Grove. There could be some updating and inside the rooms are fairly rustic (and you may have to walk out of your room to enter your bathroom), but that may be part of the charm.
