Hotel Chocolat is indeed a little pricey but rather delicious and special so I'll not whine too much. Imagine a step up from Thorntons and you have Hotel Chocolat. Clean, white looking shop with huge shelves just packed full of chocolates in gift sets, packages or boxes. I bought some Tiddly Pots from here which were assorted pots of baby buttons in different flavours. Great stocking fillers for christmas along with the Tiddly Santas and Tiddly Reindeer chocolate boxes. You can also buy drinking chocolate from here and other chocolately accessories. Beware, if you go in you will buy something. It's a dieters nightmare.

I heard of Hotel Chocolat on various chocolate blogs as being a great British brand for upscale chocolate. This is not your Cadbury but neither is it your 'bean to bar' pretentious upturn nose brand. I wanted to bring back some treats to Canada and wow, did this place ever fit the bill. Housed together with their 2 story restaurant/cafe, the Hotel Chocolat store is a spacious wonderland of Chocolate. Willy Wonka may be jealous! Service here is really great... they proactively ask you if they can help! Novel! I was mentioning how I had a little one back home who loves great chocolate but I wanted to give her things that she would only find unique to the UK or the brand itself. She was quick to point me AWAY from the boxed assorted mixes and to the chocolate sets instead... to build my own array that better fits a little one. This was great not only because it made for a better mix of tastes for us but also it was more affordable! We did get the Eton Mess (the dried berry with the white chocolate was really great), the billionare shortbread (we need more like this in Canada. Great), and salted caramel creams (something different and quite enjoyable). We savoured each bite back in Canada as we knew it'd be a few weeks more till I get back to the UK. Loved the brand, the service, and all the flavours. I'll definitely come back to pick up more.

I shouldn't have to make an excuse to go here - It's excellent. The ground floor is their outstanding chocolate and cake shop - definitely worth spending some time here tasting and choosing what they have on offer. Their selection of over 40 celebration cakes on display are stunning - you'll find yourself staring at them like some sort of art. A few of the wedding cakes are pushing £1,000.. asking if it would be worth it? For me, yes! Their cakes are amazing - no wonder Wayne Rooney bought his wedding cake from here and had it shipped to Italy. You'll find me with my face pressed up against the viewing window where you can watch the cake decorators working hard to perfect these masterpieces *drool* I'm certainly not planning my wedding or anything but I already know that there's a massive possibility that my cake will be from here. On the first floor is an elegant restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and of course CAKE. The menu is fab and I haven't heard anybody mention a bad word about it. I have yet to visit the restaurant and I hear that unless you book weeks in advance you've no chance of getting in, but this only makes me want to try it even more and it is certainly on my list. In the past I have bought baskets from here and made my own hampers, mainly for family or friends at Christmas time - consisting of chocolates, hand make cakes, biscuits, marmalades, wines etc (all locally sourced). Safe to say these always go down well. If you have a sweet tooth, this is somewhere you should definitely visit.

The shop itself is reminiscent of the one in the film Chocolat. There are aesthetically wonderful treats galore, with seductively rich smells wafting through the warm air. I bought some Pink Marc de Champagne Truffles last year for Mothers Day, and they were very well received. Although slightly excessive in price, the extravagance of the product for a special occasion is fitting. The Chocolat Charbonnel drinking chocolate is a far superior version of the usual product. Made with hot milk, the creaminess and rich flavours make the taste a delicious and complex one, without being synthetically sweet. I prefer the chocolaty delights of nearby Leeds-based Bon Bon's. I find their products more personal and the flavours more varied. However, if you need a more mainstream gift to impress, chocolates from Charbonnel et Walker would certainly achieve that.

So kitsch, yet somehow not tacky...just...beautiful! The sensuously curving gold letters swaggering across the window draw you closer...dare you enter? Dare you? I went in. The shop is quiet and I imagine rarely has more than one or two customers at once, except on February 13th! Of course, the chocolates aren't cheap...but how could they be? Where would be the decadence in that? But for that special someone...and considering the sheer quality and indulgence exuding from the classy packaging...the prices aren't through the roof. If just for a window shop, or to splash out on a special gift, I'd recommend you take a look!

It may or it may not be confusing, but does any of that matter, since the effect is that you simply must venture inside. And you won't regret having done so, either, oh no. The instant that I wandered in my eyes were drawn to the stacks of old school sweeties and goodies that were piled upon the sweet laden shelving to the left of the entrance. Blackberries and rasberries (the little chewy ones), jazzies, jelly buttons, pink and white mice, black jacks, cola pips, lemon bon bons, jelly babies - and more than I could possibly list. Heavenly. And if that wasn't enough, they sell belgian chocolates too, as the lovely assistant was pleased to inform me! The chocolates come in a number of pre-packed varieties, from specially selected packs and best seller trays. Alternatively you can pick your own - 100g for £3.95 (I think) which amounts to about 7. 9 for £4.95 and there were also 12 and 24 selections, though I've forgotten how much those came to! I went for 9, I couldn't not buy some, and they were delicious. My favourites were the white chocolate pistachio ones and the little noisette. Yum! As for the cards selection, they have them all nicely arranged so that it's easy to find what you want, and they've a really nice set to choose from. The gifts are varied and thoughtful too, ranging from some deliciously scented fragrance candles, bath sets, quirky lamps, a range of really cool wine and beer glasses (decorated in glass paints with various phrases and such) and my favourite, the quirky mugs with curious sayings such as "Camp Coffee! Daddy likes it full." This strange mug had a picture of a little girl carrying an overfull mug of coffee, presumably for her father. I did not understand the joke, but it was certainly amusing! With clearly passionate owners, a fantastically tempting range of stock, and helpful friendly assistants you can't go wrong for gifts in this lovely store. I highly recommend!

Walking upstairs we had luckily booked a table. It was chaotic ,full of screaming kids playing frisbee with the saucers and knocking teacups off the table. Cautiously I sat down avoiding this kid with sticky mitts behind me. The waitress came swiftly to take our order. The menu consists of some indulgent £4 hot chocs, cakes, sandwiches and well.. chocolate. I did consider the chilli but for 12 quid you can purchase a tea for one. This combined a hot choc/ drink of your choice, toasted sandwich , scone and some chocolate. I chose the ameretto white hot chocolate which turned out quite sickly. Then eventually the food arrived. Most of us had selected tuna melt or ham and cheese apart from one veggie.. so when the tuna arrived dripping all over the veggie sandwich she was not amused. We got this swapped. The tiered trays were intimidating so I just ate half a sandwich to make room for the scone and chocolate. The scone was nice the choclate was too experimental and sweet for me.. especially the honey choc. Also i Never saw any waitresses again..it was like tetris trying to balance all the plates and I really needed a drink . The noise level was high and the decor was that of a soup kitchen.. In the end we just went downstairs to pay. Needless to say I won't be back. I do what to try the Mousetrap instead?
