We were actually in the process rushing to get to a recommended specialty hot dog stand down the street from Chocolat and then catch the Metro when I suddenly saw a sign advertising "Ice Cream of the Gods". I was curious but hesitant since we were already in a rush. The group I was with encouraged me to go treat myself. Best. Impulse stop. EVER. Hotel Chocolat is a British chain of cocoa bar-cafés with locations all over the UK as well as in Denmark (here in Copenhagen), Japan, Hong Kong, and New York. And it does seem like they have different TYPES of locations? But modern, high-end feeling chocolate shop in the front and café in the back. It's set up with a clean design that's very photogenic/Instgramable. They have a variation of chocolates made from cacao beans from Ecuador to Indonesia and a café that serves all kinds of mostly chocolate-y drinks and desserts. And for all the jokes about me being obsessed with chocolate, everyone was pretty involved in browsing through this store. I got the "Ice Cream of the Gods", which is a very soft serve in a cone and the option for either a chocolate or a salted caramel drizzle. And it's so GOOD. Even my dad, who was skeptical about spending money on something so simple, said it was worth it after having a taste. Translated from Chinese, the consensus was that it you could really taste the milk, which made it sweetly rich rather than richly sweet. We also happened to be there between the times they were switching out samples, so we got to try the Billionaire Shortbread Chocolate Selector (caramel, cookies, and hazelnut) and a dark chocolate bit that I didn't get the name of. In hindsight, I deeply regret that I didn't get the Billionaire Sundae, a dessert based on their Billionaire Shortbread Chocolate Selector truffle. Overall, super nice and really wish we could have hung around longer, even sit down and try out more menu items. If nothing else, drop in for a free sample, but just from what I tasted, I'd say it's worth it to make this a short stop. It's definitely on my list for the next time I'm back in Copenhagen or even London. That ice cream just made me really happy... read more

I don't usually search out ice cream parlors and sweets shops. But, my wife insisted we had to go to this one. First impression was it was a high end chocolate shop. We bought some small samples and everybody ordered an ice cream. I would normally just take a few bites out of my wife's cone because I get nauseous after about half a cone. It's just too sweet and rich. But, she insisted on no sharing this time because she wanted the whole thing to herself. So, she ordered a rather large cone for me alone. They were right. It was not super sugary like other ice cream. The lady behind the counter said the only sugar came from the milk itself. I finished the whole cone without feeling like I'd just had a tub of butter/cream. We were only in town for a week, but managed to come back to this place for seconds. Holy cocoa pod! Check me in and I'd stay here forever. UK based Hotel Chocolat reminds me of Dandelion chocolate company from San Francisco: supreme quality chocolates ranging from single origin bars with the slightest addition of cane sugar (and low preservatives), intoxicating truffles, petit desserts and even a line of toiletries made with cocoa butter. Their 70% milk chocolate squares are deceiving: it tasted rich with a hint of nuttiness and very slight sweetness that I thought it could pass for 65% dark. The thing to get is the hot chocolate! I went here two days in a row because it was THAT good! We were especially lucky that the weather was warm in Copenhagen so we requested it iced. One time they made it with a slushy consistency (similar to Starbucks' frappucinno version) and it was the perfect afternoon treat. Big tourist spot. It was delicious though. I enjoyed a hazelnut chocolate shake. It was well crafted and came out fairly quickly. The store is packed full of every type of chocolate you can think of. This is close to Nyhavn. There are lots of shops in this area. If you are a chocoholic like I am, you need to come here. They have a bar/ cafe that sells hot chocolate and pastries and of course, shelves and shelves of chocolate bars, truffles, spreads, perfume, scented oil, soap, etc. They also have balsamic vinegar infused with chocolate and port wine for pairing with chocolate. I got lots of chocolate bars and bon bond for myself and to give to family/friends: amaretto, praline, hazelnut, pistachio, apple cider, banoffee, chili, champagne - in dark or milk chocolate. I also got their chocolate hazelnut spread. My sister and I tried their hot chocolate. Amazing! The guy running the cafe and shop was super nice and friendly. read more

Amazing! What a great place for a delicious hot chocolate on a just cold enough day! Flying back from a business trip, my co-worker and I had a 7 hour layover in Copenhagen... (possibly planned that intentionally... just sayin) and we walked around a lot of Copenhagen. We stumbled upon this place just walking down the main pedestrian shopping area and based our decision to go in just from the sandwich board advertisement they had outside that was too good to be true. We walked in stunned at the concept of this cafe. Chocolate drinks, coffees, desserts, cookies, truffles... yum! Why wouldn't we try this out?! The girl behind the counter was fantastic and helped us make some educated decisions about what to choose. I went with the salted caramel hot chocolate and the co-worker went with the 70% dark. I didn't try his, but mine was amazing. We got the chocolate whip cream which was essentially mousse (heavenly) and it came with a couple of small bars of chocolate as well. While waiting for our hot chocolate to come, my co-worker browsed the rest of the shop, and since we were there closer towards Christmas, they had all the advent calendars out and I decided to buy the advent calendar for 2 for the wife and I which features 12 different truffles. Can't wait for the 1st of December! Totally recommend anyone to come check this place out. read more

If you love chocolate go to this place! It is a chocolate heaven and has any flavours and combinations you can imagine! I was there with my friend who is an engineer and once I told this to the person working there he made us a tour to explain exactly how the cocoa been is cleaned and cut and separated from its shell and then melted into chocolate. He showed us all the machines in the store. So friendly! There are also few tables in the back if you want to stay and enjoy a warm chocolate. All the chocolates there are handmade and delicious! The shop is on the main shopping street of Copenhagen and close to the end of Kongens Nytorv, just opposite the Bang and Olufsen shop. It's worth just a detour from all the clothes shopping! Dear chocolate lover..the Hotel Chocolat won't disappoint you. They have a wild varieties of chocolate and some are in a very pretty box, perfect for gift in any occasions. My favorite is a champagne truffle..super yummy. What you can't miss is a delicious hot chocolate. Best quality!!!! You can sit and relax inside the cafe after walk around and get so excited about this place. Even the one in a tin I bought home with me was so good. Not a powder of chocolate but a real piece of chocolate inside. The salted caramel one is the best!!! I love choloclate. More so i love a shop dedicated to chocolate. Whilst in Copenhagen we crossed town in the pouring rain just so i could find Hotel Chocolat as a last stop before my flight home and i wasn't disapointed. As a none coffee drinker i'm used to my only options being large or small when ordering a beverage in a coffee shop. so it was nice to finally be able to choose from a range of flavours. I went with the hazelnut hot chocolate, topped with chocolate flavoured whipped cream and a single chocolate truffle on the side. Heaven right there!! The shop obviously also stocks a huge range of chocolate bars and gifts, including a vintage range (expensive but then that's Copenhagen). They also roll there own beans and make their own chocolate on site. I could happily live right there read more

I thought I was too old for a hot chocolate, or rather I had to give it up (just don't have the metabolism of a little kid to drink all those calories!). BUT NOPE. The chocolate beverages from Hotel Chocolat are worth every krone and extra step I had to take to burn off the chocolate. Also after all the walking around, it was very lovely to sit down, take a break, and refuel. they had couches/table/chairs/benches. If you're looking for Belgian level chocolate, seek no further. This is also the only place I've enjoyed hot chocolate from. Pro tip: if you come after seasonal promos (e.g. Halloween, Christmas), some of their chocolates are 50% off. At the end of the day, good chocolate is still good chocolate. Nothing wrong with a choco reindeer in January. We tried their salted caramel hot chocolate, and it was perfect for a cold day and for a sweet tooth. This shop has so many different chocolates, including those in some crazy wild packages and also in themes. I saw some Halloween-themed chocolates there now that it's mid-September. They also have a little cafe corner where you could drink warm chocolates and sample their items while you chat. They provide free lemon water if you're thirsty. I bought a small box of their chocolates for a gift and the girl behind the counter happily put it into a gift box for me and wrapped it up so prettily. We walked through the store and picked up a few things, when it was time to cash out the cashier made sure to let us know we could add another and save off the total. What a great little place. It looks a little unassuming from the street, but take a brief walk along the hallway to their shop. They are serious about chocolate - its pretty rare to find a place that actually makes their own chocolate from the bean. This place is a joke - British chocolate in Copenhagen?? - What about the Swiss, French or even the Danish. I tasted some wonderful chocolates from Summerbird, really nice. I am told that this City has over 60+ Chocolate Shops, all-local, why go British? The place is really nice looking, this place could have ben located south of Tribeca NY - was not impressed with the staff or the "re-invented" Choco drinks. Will not come back for any of them. I keep asking my self: Why do you want to steam a Choco drink - it will eventually taste burned. The staff did not have a clue about what I was talking about.... We were walking around, spotted this place and I remembered reading about the hot chocolate here. Though it was hot outside, the shop was nice and cool inside so hubby and I decided to stop here for our daily sugar injection. I ordered the chili cocoa with chocolate whipped cream (why isn't everyone using this?) I've always wanted to try cocoa with chili (just like anyone else who's ever seen the movie Chocolat) and I can't imagine a better version than this one. My husband wanted an iced mocha but the chocolate they were using was a bit strong and he found it bitter and not sweet enough. I encouraged him to ask for something different, which does not come as easy to the English as it does us Americans, and the guy who helped us could have not been friendlier. He explained why the chilled version would taste more bitter than a hot one, and brought out a new hot one with whipped cream on the house. It was just as good as my cocoa, and the guy even came back a few minutes later to make sure my husband liked it. Now that's going above and beyond! I wish I remembered the employee's name but he was working the day of this review. He deserves major credit, not just for the delicious beverages but for outstanding service.
