It was our first time visiting the Alps and there were so many unknowns in terms of logistics. We only had 4 days so we want to make sure we make the right choice. We decided to stay in the jungfrau region because we felt that was less touristy and the views are as nice if not nicer than the other regions. We were debating between Murren and Wengen, in the end we chose Wengen because it was car free and was quite central to places where we wanted to go. Looking back, we made the right choice but Murren would have been fine for us as well. We really enjoyed the tranquility and sweeping views that Wengen offered.
The next was finding the right hotel. Wengen is pretty small so its hard to find a hotel that is in a bad location. You wont find chains or luxury hotels in this area, more family run, small business hotels. Our criteria were quietness, aesthetics, proximity to train station and of course a good value (price/quality). I think that we hit the jackpot here.
The location is fantastic, it is close to the train station but was still quiet. We were able to walk to it from the train with luggage in 5 mins. There s short portion that is downhill going to the hotel so its uphill going back to the train station which was not a big deal even with heavy bags. The coop (supermarket) is just across the train station. One of the things that was hard for us to get information was the cost of these lifts. When you go hiking, you do a combination of SBB trains, gondolas (cable cars) and your feet. The lifts are super expensive in my opinion. For example, the lift from Wengen to Manlichen was almost 40 chf but you get a discount with some of these gondolas if you stay at Hotel Baren. What we did was take the lifts up and then just walk our way down to towns. It might be harder on your knees but if you have the technique down, its a better use of your time and energy coz I see people going up and they are almost ready to give up after an hour. BTW if you want tips and recommendations for your hikes, ask Therese, she really gives great advise.
The room was exactly what you see in pictures. It was charming and cozy. We stayed in room 205 which I really liked because I dont think there was a room right above it. I am super sensitive to noise and am a very light sleeper so I was worried since it had wood floors but I did not hear anyone above me. We chose the room with balcony and we never saw our neighbors out there. There really is no privacy when your in the balcony since there is barely any wall in between as you can see in the picture I posted. If you had a noisy neighbor or a smoker and they are out in the balcony, and you are not into that then that would be bad. Thankfully we never had that problem. The room had no small fridge but you can bring it down and they can store it in their kitchen. You pay more for rooms with balcony. I think on our return, yes we plan to return to this same hotel, we might choose one without because we were never really in the room. If you foresee yourself to be in the room a lot then get one with balcony otherwise, you can save a good amount if you opt for the room without. The internet in the room was fast and reliable as well. I am someone who is used to the comfort and pampering from luxury hotels so I was hesitant with this one at first but it turned to be lovely.
Other than having a quiet room for my beauty sleep, one of the most important things that I look for is service. I have to say that except for one of the employees there who I felt lack the personality and warmth compared to most of the employees, the service here is very good. My favorite is Karen, she has the service with a smile, she even dropped us off in the train station with our bags. If you need anything breakfast, just ask Linda, she is always there to help. Marissa is also one of my favorites. These ladies just know what excellent customer service means.
When you book here, you have the option to get a rate with dinner and without. I seldom if never eat in hotels in my world travels. There's something about hotel restaurants that do not appeal to me. I am also very picky with my food and meals.
The dinner that comes with the rate is a pre-fixed menu so I was afraid of being limited and with no choice that I will be happy with. We ended up having dinner in the restaurant our first night and after that, we decided to change our rate to include dinner for the rest of our stay. The food is that good. Not your typical hotel food or any casual restaurant. The food here is at the same level as some of the fine restaurants that I have been to. I wont be surprised if they have a Michelin star. People come to this place just for the food. When you are booking, don't even think about it, include the rate with dinner, it comes down to 20 per person for dinner (appetizer, entree, dessert) which is a STEAL in Swiss standards. As healthy eaters, the breakfast also meets our needs. read more
