My wife and I have since come back to Hotel Angerer for a nice pre-deployment-last-restaurant-meal-for-a-while meal. For a special, they had wild boar steak. Wild boar steak you say? I was interested. I ordered it, and when it came out I started to really question whether I had made a good last pre-Afghanistan investment of 14 euro. There were two small steak in a sour cherry and cranberry sauce. As an American, I immediately associate cherries with pie, and this was not pie. I was automatically skeptical. But, then I tasted it, and it was wonderful. The meat itself was excellent-- well-cooked and exceptionally lean, so it wasn't very heavy or rich. But the sauce. The sauce! The sour cherries acidity nicely cut the richness of the wild boar jus (have you ever heard that before?), and the steaks had been nicely seasoned with rosemary, which served as a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of the cherries. An all around winner. My wife and I were surprised, because the quality, creativity, and execution of both of our meals was much better than before. We asked our waitress if they had recently hired a new chef, but they had not. Instead, the chef's daughter, who is merely an apprentice (a trainee chef) was filling in. So, only 4 stars, because in my opinion the chef's daughter is, despite being an apprentice, a better chef making better food. However, the change will be short-lived, and who knows if she'll pass on any of her successful specials or tweaks to the regular menu when she leaves. We can only wait and see. read more

Hotel: I stayed at Hotel Angerer for a week for a business trip, and it was a perfectly fine choice in the Vilseck/Grafenwoehr area. This is a smaller place and the front desk isn't manned 24/7, but the proprietor lives nearby and comes over quickly if there is an issue (you can call from the front desk). Service was friendly and the two women I spoke with during my stay both spoke enough english for me to get by. The studio I had was one of two top-floor rooms, and it was a pretty substantial room with plenty of closet space, a small mini-fridge, and a little two burner stove (I'm not sure if there were pans or not, I never checked), plus the usual desk/chair, couch and chairs, and a small table to eat at with a couple more chairs. The bathroom was small, as was the shower, but it worked just fine. The bed was pretty substantial, and comfortable enough. WiFi is free, but slow, and parking is just on the street out front (but I never had a problem getting a spot). Continental breakfast is included; it's a small spread of meats, cheese, bread, granola, etc, and the woman on duty will get you coffee, tea, and/or eggs is you want. Overall a perfectly fine hotel. Restaurant: Only the gastzimmer was open since it's the low season, but service was friendly and my meal was good. Roasted deer with potato dumplings and berry sauce was good, and the selection of beers by Tucher was sufficient to scratch the itch for any German beer style you might want. I'd love to come back to Vilseck in the spring or summer, and I would certainly stay here again. read more

I stayed here for a week. Everyone there was super-polite and courteous. The rooms were pretty stark however, not even shampoo or hairdryer provided; just a soap dispenser. I went to the restaurant pretty often since it was part of my package. The breakfast is adequate, though there was no fresh fruit. Just lots of bread, meat, cheese, yogurt, cereal. The bed was ok. The place is pretty outdated. But, I wasn't paying, so for that it was okay. Would not be my first choice...but I don't know what the other options are like in that town. read more

Awful service. The woman was rude at the desk and the plastic food that they tried to serve for breakfast was cold.

Stayed here in April of 2012. Very standard gaesthaus type hotel, very basic. I ate here only once. I don't remember what it was, but I'm pretty sure it was a type of wurst. It was OK. I was only there for three days, so I didn't really get the chance to experience much of it. read more
