I've generally found vegetables (aside from potatoes) fairly sparse on menus in Germany, so having a small salad to start my meal was a nice touch. There isn't a massive selection, but everything there was fresh and tasty. Beer selection was solid, as to be expected, and the food was all good. The schnitzel was nice and crispy on the outside, and still moist enough on the inside. The burgers looked decent enough, as did the grilled pork with spaetzle. Service was typical for Germany, and as you'll find in a lot of places the food comes out of the kitchen as it is ready, not all at once, so there can be some time between the first and last plates arriving. If that is the case, the polite thing to do in Germany is to eat your food when it arrives so that you are eating it hot. read more

My husband and I ate at the Gasthof Hammer last night. We've eaten at many of the German gasthauses in the Grafenwoehr area, but the Hammer is truly the best we've been to so far. The food was fresh and delicious, and there is a fairly broad range of choices on the menu. There is very traditional German food as well as lighter grilled fare and vegetarian options. I had the fried mushroom appetizer, and the grilled pork with cream gravy and cheese spaetzle. It was absolutely delicious. My husband loved his schnitzel with a fried egg and home fries. While the dessert menu was limited to ice cream selections last night, it was still very good ( despite the fact that my husband almost dumped it over in his lap). The service was excellent and friendly as well. We decided we would be back on a regular basis because we want to try so many more things on the menu. read more

This review is only about the restaurant. I live in the town, so I've never stayed here in a room. The food is, at best, inconsistent. My wife and I have been there twice. The first time the food was okay, at least good enough that we decided to return. We had onion soup as an appetizer (a clear broth), and jägerschitzel with spätzle. Everything was okay, so once we moved out to the area we decided to return. Our experience on our return was quite different. We again ordered onion soup for an appetizer. I had the hammer spieß, she again had jägerschnitzel with spätzle. The onion soup was terrible. It was incredibly thick and had a radioactive yellow color. It seemed like someone had made powdered onion soup but had only added a quarter of the amount of water the box called for. We sent it back. Then we got our mains. My hammer spieß was, well, hammered. My wife described it aptly, "The meat looked like it died twice. Once when they killed the pig, and again when they cooked it." The potatoes it was served with had been sauteed to oblivion. The knife work on the kabobs of pork, peppers, and mushrooms was incredibly sloppy. Huge cubes of pork with teeny mushrooms, again all cooked to oblivion. The pork was dry; the mushrooms were mush. My wife's jägerschnitzel was passable. We sent the hammer spieß back and split her dinner instead. As compensation the manager gave us a free dessert-- a trifle of strawberries, pound cake, and mascarpone. Delicious. We would have been happy to just eat that, and we almost decided that any time we returned we would only order this dessert. But...we haven't returned. Why go to a mediocre, at best, gasthof when there are other ones right down the street that are light years better (and that also will serve you some good dessert)? One thing my wife and I noticed is this place gets frequented by a lot of Americans from the nearby military base, but not many local Germans, and that's probably why the food isn't as good as it could be. The Americans eat the inconsistent stuff they serve and don't complain, and since they don't venture out much to find other, better restaurants the ownership is content to stay the course. If you go, expect the quality of food to be a crap shoot. My advice: there are better restaurants to spend your money at. read more

This place is great. They have the best spatzle I have had so far. The salad bar is good. The service makes up for anything it is lacking portion size wise. Even if the portions seem small, they do still fill you up! read more

I've come here for dinner a few times over the past few years, and the food has always been fantastic. It's not as traditional as it gets. but the dishes are always well-balanced and beautifully presented. I particularly love the salad bar. Additionally, the restaurant has a very cozy, home-like ambience. There's plenty of seating for large groups, but it still manages to feel intimate for a party of two. On my last visit, I got the turkey curry (it's not called that on the menu but that's what it was) and my dining companion got the salad with grilled shrimp. Both were amazing. I will definitely be back many more times in the future. read more

The best German gasthof(guest house) I have ever been to in my 3 years living across the street from it. They have a very attentive staff and a great high quality kitchen. They serve the standard Bavarian fare but do it well with a great selection of local beer to boot. read more
