The hotel is located across from a small lake along the busy B-470 state road in East Central Bavaria. It is comprised of three buildings, two covered areas, and a small parking lot. The restaurant and reception are located in the main building. I stayed in the hotel for 2 weeks in July (on business) and ate at the restaurant several times for dinner and several times for breakfast. The hotel is 9 miles from USAG Grafenwöhr gate 6 which is about a 12 minute drive at the speed limit, most of which is 100km/hr.
Hotel Review -
Atmosphere: At first glance the hotel looks very commercial, however, about 10 seconds after you meet the owner, Alex, you'll realize this is a nice family run hotel. The hotel appearance, the patios, tables with canopy, etc., are all arranged nicely and the overall effect is one of comfort and relaxation.
Service: You need it, you'll get it. Beer (other than from the restaurant) is included in the price of your hotel stay. Let me say that again. Beer (other than from the restaurant) is included in your hotel stay. There are little refrigerators scattered throughout the hotel with 1/2 liter bottles of beer in them. The owner apologized that the brand he usually stocks was unavailable but since the best beer is "free" beer, everything was good.
Room: I had a single room in the old (middle) building. Since I was a last-minute booking, I ended up with a rather small room, however, there was a single bed, window, 32" HD flat panel TV, desk, etc. The wireless internet is open throughout the hotel and is provided through Kabel Deutschland. At first I thought the up/down rates were average, however, I was able to download about 24 GB of game data in a few hours, which is much better than most hotel systems.
I stayed almost 2 weeks but spent the weekend traveling in the Czech Republic. The owner was going to move me to a larger room over the weekend but as I wasn't there, it slipped his mind the following Monday and by that time I only had a few nights left and really wasn't bothered by it.
Note: My room had no phone or alarm clock, however, it did have a private toilet, sink, and shower. The bathroom was unexpectedly spacious given the size of the room.
Parking: Not plentiful, and you'd better be good at backing in or parallel parking, but I always found a spot. Part of the problem is there's enough parking for guests but the kitchen has a good reputation in the area and attracts many guests on its own.
Conditions: It was VERY warm while I was there. As with most small hotels outside of major metropolitan areas there is no A/C in the rooms. There was a fan and I kept the bedroom window and bathroom window open all night with the fan on me just to stay sane in the heat. A nice touch is the windows do have screens on them (many places do not). Also, my room was on the north side of the hotel overlooking the lake and lake play area. Between the lake and the hotel, however is B470 which gets busy around 5 AM. With the window open, no rolladens or blackout curtains (not that I would have used them since I needed the outside air) I didn't need an alarm clock - the sun and traffic noise woke me up each day. However, it was so pleasant a view and the weather was nice and cool then that I really didn't mind.
Food: Standard German menu. I had the special my first night, ribs and fries. The ribs were cooked perfectly and the meat was excellent. The beer is very good as well. My last night I had a 200g (pre-cooked weight) Argentinian fillet. I asked for it "rare" hoping for "medium rare" (standard for Europe is to overcook beef for some reason) and it was actually between the two - perfect. There was no gristle to the meat, very flavorful. I was very satisfied with both the dinner options and the breakfast buffet.
Overall: I will try to stay there again when I go back in the winter for more (business) fun in Bavaria. read more
