This is a really nice lodging. I'm guessing it's relatively new, maybe 3-5 years old? I only stayed…read morehere because of the mandatory ROM requirement coming off of covid. Because of this though, I was given a room with a small kitchen top. Room is super spacious. The bathroom alone is really spacious. Lots of room for 1-2 people and the couch is even a fold-out couch! I spent a lot of afternoons taking naps on that couch.

Typical of any MWR Lodging, all the necessary amenities are here. The rooms have a nice flow and…read morelayout. The kitchenette is especially helpful for those on TDY or PCS. It has a casual feel to it because it is wood covered and doesn't look like a kitchen. I'm going to miss the big soaker tubs offered by Germany. The front desk staff is helpful. If ever you arrive on a holiday, know that the parade field is across the street and the parking lot at the hotel will be abused. You will have to fight for parking, so check in early. After that, though, location is phenomenal. You can walk to the movie theater, PX, commissary, even the gym, if you want. The gate off post is only a couple blocks. I wish breakfast had more seating, but the tables outside make up for it if you bring a jacket. It can be chilly, as its covered. There is a small playground and a few seating areas setup in the garden pathway. The entrance looks inviting, but the seating is not comfortable. Kind of a bummer. Movies are offered and there is a small computer center. Not many CAC keyboards, though, so bring your own. There was always a line when I was here. We were stepping on each other to check mail and access websites. I had multiple issues with security features and access. I had to bring my laptop to a keyboard to access. Bring your own!! Laundry is a flashback to basic where people steal your clothes, leave laundry unattended for hours so you cant keep the laundry flow cycle. On a good note, someone is always leaving, so there's usually soap or dryer sheets available. German and u.s. style laundering options

The restaurant is excellent, and welcomes guests who are not staying in the hotel. This hotel overlooks a lake and so there are outdoor activities readily available. 20 minute drive from the Graffenwohr base.

I've stayed at the Hotel am See and it's always a "home away from home." Alex and crew are the…read moremost gracious hosts you will find, and the hotel itself is a perfect balance of old and modern. There are 12-14 English channels on the satellite TV in addition to the 40+/- international ones, the rooms (at least in the first building where I always stay) are well-sized in that you have plenty of space but it's also cozy. The bathrooms are modern and mine only have a shower but that's all I need. As mentioned there is no air conditioning (not uncommon in Europe) but there are ceiling fans that keep the rooms cool enough in all but the hottest of days. The restaurant is excellent and there is a Continental breakfast every morning. Even more importantly, the coffee is smooth and flavorful! It's the perfect way to start your day! About the only tip I can share is that if you are a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the back (forested) part of the hotel. The front side along the B470 that faces lake Kleiner Rußweiher has beautiful views but even with the good soundproofing there will be the occasional loud truck or motorcycle that will go by during the night that may disturb your sound sleep. Otherwise, note that the restaurant is very popular so parking can be an issue during dining hours in the evening. But if you're looking for a great place to stay in the Grafenwöhr area, Hotel am See is highly recommended! If you are looking for an adventure, the tower atop the large hill to the south is called Kleiner Kulm and can be reached in about a 15 minute drive. It's a great hike with a wonderful view atop the 85ft tower. There is also a wonderful walled monastery called the Kloster Speinshart along the way, definitely worth a stop! Also, hikes around Kleiner Rußweiher or up the hill from the am See provide wonderful sights! Even the short hike into Escenbach, the village in which the hotel resides, provides a lot to see.
