This studio was fine, but lacked mindfulness aspect of Yoga that I really look for in my practice. My main critique is that after taking one class and finding that the studio's more aerobic approach wasn't a good match for me, they refused to refund the remaining balance of the month long membership I purchased. Finding a yoga studio that fits your practice is a very personal experience and I was really disappointed. So if you want to try out this studio, make sure you only buy 1 class in the beginning. read more

The teacher have great cues and the class was otherwise balanced, but about ten people sat on their mats 50 minutes into the 75-minute class. 100+ degrees is not OK in a power yoga class. Having just moved to the Capitola area, I had heard great things about PPY and was excited to give the New Student Special a try. I once had a very regular yoga practice and was looking to get back into it. I even convinced my boyfriend to give it a try with me. He had never practiced yoga before and so we chose one of the basic classes recommended for beginners. We figured it would help me ease back into it, and it would give him the foundational tools to begin a practice. Unfortunately, our experience was completely disheartening. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. The bathrooms/locker rooms were on the smaller side, but clean and maintained. The studio space appeared clean as well. No complaints there. However, the class was HORRIBLE. As I mentioned before, this was supposedly a class appropriate for beginners and was advertised to us by staff as so. Couldn't be farther from the that. At the start of class, the instructor took no time to ask if there were any beginners in the room. This should have been my first warning sign. Maybe I've been lucky, but all studios I've practiced at previously have had instructors who come up and introduce themselves to new faces and inquire if that new face has any yoga experience or prior injuries they should be aware of. It makes the teacher aware of who they may need to help offer modifications to, who may need a little more assistance with proper body alignment, etc. So after not surveying the room to see who was new, the instructor jumps right into class. Didn't even give a quick intro to a basic flow (chaturanga to cobra/upward facing dog to downward facing dog) so they know what to do when she says "flow". This meant every time she said "flow" all the beginners looked around the room frantically trying to figure out what was happening (my boyfriend included). The instructor never went around the room and helped the new folks with proper positioning, maintained a pace that was beyond the abilities of beginners to practice safely, and only offered adjustments to more advanced students in the room. If you are going to advertise a class as a class that will be beneficial to beginners then make them your focus. I am confident that an advanced practice yogi will know how to challenge themselves in a beginner class and will know when to implement arm balances and inversions as it suits their practice. Leave that out of a beginner class if you aren't going to help with proper positioning or modification to prevent injury!! I left PPY livid, not at all how I wanted to feel after a yoga session. I even apologized to my boyfriend for bringing him along. After this class, I decided PPY was not a place I wanted to reconnect with my practice at. I never returned to utilize the rest of my New Student Special. read more

Started doing a 30 day challenge going to pilates which I have a lot of experience in. The classes were much, much to hot and movements fast and it really was more like aerobics than any pilates I've ever known. Ended up hurting my neck in class and never returned. I work with several other people that have also quit due to injuries or strains while in class. Don't feel inspired to return with the feeling that you like the class when it's "over" I want pilates / yoga I enjoy while I'm doing it. On the plus side , facility is attractive and love the cold wash cloths. read more

I often visit Santa Cruz on the weekends and have been looking early morning barre classes, which are rare to find in the area. This studio popped up in my search this week, and I was both intimidated and enthralled by how hard all the reviewers said these classes were. I have been taking barre classes forever, and while J love the low impact, it's hard to keep me interested for very long. I was nervous to take a class, but I tried it out anyway. WOW, it was HARD, and it was only an express Pilates class!i don't think I have ever sweat that much in my life, and I had to stop at several points because my legs simply wouldn't move anymore! The front desk staff was very welcoming, and so was the instructor. I love that guys go to this studio, too. I am definitely bringing my husband (if there are no waves, of course)! Glad I did the one month new student membership, as I hope I can take as many classes as possible over the next month! read more

I tried the New Student Special, $40 for 30 days unlimited, and I'm glad I did. So far I have had three different instructors and they have all been good, although I have to say that Pat Tao is my favorite- he's awesome! I am new to hot yoga, and although I regularly practice yoga, I would recommend beginning with the Power Yoga Basics classes. The pace is a bit slower and you get a chance to explore each pose (and get used to the heat). The regular Power Yoga classes are quite vigorous- I can't imagine doing the Power + class yet! Maybe in time. The facilities are clean and tastefully decorated. My only suggestion would be to do a quick wipe down or Swiffer of the studio floor between classes- people are (obviously) sweating a LOT and the floor gets pretty yucky. Other than that, I would definitely recommend checking this studio out! read more

I absolutely love this studio, but think the assistant manager Allison is one of the rudest and most unprofessional people I have ever met. She is incredibly unfriendly, and it makes this place feel unnecessarily snobby and unwelcoming. In other discussions I have had with people there, this feeling seems to be mutual. I must say, this is so unfortunate given how wonderful all the teachers are. As a manager myself, I definitely understand how much one person can absolutely change the entire dynamic and feel of an environment. I have to say, I wouldn't stand for this as a business owner-- because you will absolutely loose the clientele of people who are on the line, nervous to go to a new facility, and are curious about whether or not this is the right place for them. If it wasn't for this person working there, I would absolutely be willing to pay the high price in order to go back. Such a bummer that she makes this a very uncomfortable place to be. read more

Love the heated room... Great atmosphere , I love that u can leave early during class or show up a little late to class and it's ok. This is hot yoga so remember if it's ur first time here ur goal is to just stay in the room for as long as u can. FYI it is warmer than bikrim, which is why most classes are just 1 hr, and some are 1 hr and 15mins. read more

Discovered the Power Yoga studio this week while visiting Santa Cruz for the holidays. I have taken many power yoga classes throughout the years, but WOW, the Power Yoga class I took today with Jeanette blew the rest of them out of the water! I was a sweaty mess [in a good way!] by the time the class ended today. They heat the studio to 95-100 degrees which really adds intensity to the overall workout. Jeanette was very friendly, and was great at walking through the details of each and every pose. She definitely pushed the POWER side of the class, making each pose very challenging, but also offering modifications along the way! Great experience overall! I will most likely be VERY sore tomorrow! If you want to go to a yoga class, but get a fantastic workout as well-- I highly recommend Power Yoga! I will be back--tomorrow in fact! read more

I discovered PurePower 2 or 3 years ago and I love it! I have gone from intermittent practitioner to addict. The practice is extremely challenging and satisfying. The music is fun, the room is quite warm. I started in Pilates due to an old back injury and thanks to the excellent instruction I was able to practice even when every other form of exercise was too painful. I have since moved on to practicing the additional classes offered- yoga and yoga sculpt as well as pilates. The instructors are friendly and helpful, and in my experience, has drawn a friendly crowd also. I think it is worth every penny. read more

I have never attended yoga before, and it was in pure power hot yoga ! It is not easy. But all the staff give you one on one attention (like a personal training session) and I have never felt better in my life! I expected it to be hot , since it says "hot" yoga , but it's way doable . The studio is clean , organized and the staff always smiling and helpful. 1 year now and I have never been so strong in years , I am thankful for this place -perfect timing for what I needed after gym blahs ! It took me 3 tries to make it through an entire class. When I finally made it through, from beginning to end, Brooke at the front desk said, "You made it!". My review is just on the the Yoga classes. I was really surprised by the some of the reviews. I thought they would all be 5 stars and 4 stars. I was really impressed by the beauty and cleanliness of the studio. I loved all the teachers that I have had so far, Jessica, Tim, Greg (or is Craig I don't know). I love the hardwood floors and that they clean them between classes. I love how the heat opens my muscles and joints up and I feel that it helps protect my body by warming it up very quickly. I love how the the teachers give you modifications if a pose is too difficult and how they let you know that this is your practice and that you don't have to force anything you just need to listen to what your body is telling you. I have recommended this place to at least 15 people who have gone and they all love it and continue to go there so.... If you want a great work out, a great stretch and clear your mind of all your stress you should go. read more

I'll start off by saying my teenage daughter loves it, so I bought her a ten class pass and she goes almost every day. So I know I'll be buying more for her at least. I tried the 30 day new member special and mistakenly thought I had a month to use it. I went to one class on the first of the month, and as a previous review mentioned found the class almost unbearably hot. I had to leave once which I haven't done with past hot classes I've taken from other studios in the past. Because of this I resisted going back till the last day of the month, what I thought was my last day, hoping for a different experience and so I could at least get my money's worth. Turns out I missed my last day by one day (due to the fact that July has 31 days and not 30) and the front desk staff, unfortunately made no exceptions. I understand, but geez. Between the mat and towel rental and new member special, I paid almost $50 for one class that felt like torture. read more

As much as I enjoyed the studio, I have to agree with the reviews from Hannah and Chandra that its just TOO HOT for power yoga. I've been doing power yoga for years as well and absolutely love it. I was relieved to see their reviews because I thought I was just being a wimp! I had to step out of the yoga room, I just couldn't handle the heat. I've been going to Yoga Source in Los Gatos for quite some time and I think their heat level is perfect (I do love heated yoga!), but now I'm living in Santa Cruz and really need a studio close by. I rarely write reviews, but I'm hoping there may be enough consensus on the heat level to result in a change for a safer yoga room. I'm not the expert of course! I would love to make this my new home studio, but I just can't go back with the heat at that level :-( read more

I tried Hot Yoga for the first time ever at pure power yoga and I was not disappointed. I wasn't really sure what to expect going into to the class as a newbie. I'm a fairly athletic person but the hot yoga classes definitely gave me a good work out. I was exhausted by the end of class but felt extremely refreshed and relaxed afterwards. The staff there was great and very friendly. The instructor for my first class was Krystal and she was very helpful. Krystal kept a good pace in the class and at the same time was able to help me correct my form for some of the poses and positions. I highly recommend Pure Power Yoga to anyone new to yoga. read more

Too hot for me! I do yoga at Divinitree and am fairly used to warm yoga, but this is an entirely different animal. I did a 90-day challenge at Bikram once and decided I would never again darken the doorway of a studio whose classes were 100+ degrees. This yoga was HOT. I took the class of one of my beloved teachers and am used to his level of intensity, but it was just too much for me. This studio has, however, some of my favorite instructors, is a beautiful space and is very conveniently located. It seems the perfect landing spot for those yogis that love the heat. read more

I absolutely love Pure Power, but the reason for the 4 stars, is that they went and got rid of the sweat towels and the cold towels (I know that was a while ago, but shoot, we are paying enough to warrant a couple free towels...). The second reason is that I feel it is EXTREMELY necessary to put a cap on the number of people allowed into a class. If you already have a cap, I suggest you lower it. Not all classes are packed elbow to elbow, but the ones that are, it's miserable and distracting to take a class while having to worry about hitting your neighbor. read more

I have only taken two classes here so far but am loving it. The teachers are all really nice and helpful. The thing I love the most is when you leave a class you get a cold towel that smells like lemon!!!! For free!!!! I have done hot yoga on and off for the past 5 years and I have NEVER been to a studio that does this for its students. PPY is a special community that offers its students support, encouragement and inspiration. I've witnessed first hand the positive benefits of being a student at PPY, both mentally and physically. Do not go to this studio unless you want to get hurt. I have practiced yoga for many years and damaged my neck very badly the first time I took a class at this studio due to bad instructions from one of the teachers. Months later the injury is still not entirely better. Avoid this place like the plague. read more
