I've always said "let yelpers lead the way" this place has rave reviews and I'm glad I listened. I was pretty miffed last time I went to Portillo and they changed the brand of hot dogs they use. Blasphemy! Everyone knows the best hot dogs are Vienna beef and anyone from Chicago or NYC will attest to that. T Allen's is good, but the buns are blah. A real Chicago dog had a steamed poppyseed bun. This place checked all the boxes and was cheap! I used to go to a place in Michigan City with my dad every time we went to the movies. This place " tastes like my childhood" thank you for the nostalgia. It's nothing fancy, just some sweet ladies working behind the counter. Grab a meal here then go to St Patrick's park for a picnic. OOPS! I thought I had posted a review after visiting here last April when we were in South Bend to visit relatives from Ukraine here to see their daughter and her family. I had never had an "official" Chicago dog and we were heading back to So Cal in two days, so I found Hot-Dogs Plus on Yelp! (which was easier than finding it on the street, because they don't really have a sign to let you know where they are). The Chicago dogs were great! Vienna beef dogs, mustard, tomatoes, dill pickles, onions and the infamous sport peppers and "Atomic Green" relish . . . all on a poppy seed bun (something you can't find in LA, but can order through Amazon.com at a ridiculous price). The folks here are super-friendly, and it was a shame that the COVID chaos prevented us from eating inside while the dogs were hot. They have a decent menu with other hot dog and hamburger choices, too. If we ever get back to South Bend, I know where I'm coming for a Chicago dog again! read more

For what this location is, it has some great food. It's simply a drive though, but the food is fantastic and it's constant. They have specials that they advertise throughout the week and will remember you if you visit multiple times. You can even call in orders ahead of time. For those who like to take home food or bring it to a park, this location is perfect. The variety on the menu is great as well. read more

Being raised in Chicago the Chicago corner hot dog & Italian beef joints are what I miss. First let me tell you what make a great dog great in Chicago... it is the combinations of toppings, bun and hot dog. The hot MUST be a Kosher style all beef hot dog, and not the 1/4 jumbo but just a regular size as too much meat will not balance the with the topping The dog should be preferably Vienna Beef hot dog. The bun is S. Rosen poppy seed bun and it is key and accept no substitutions or it it is NOT a Chicago dog. The toppings: Yellow mustard, diced onion, slices of fresh tomato, Vienna Beef bright green pickle relish, kosher pickle spear, a shake of Celery Salt and Sport peppers (a type of hot pepper I have only seeing on thins from Chicago.) And sorry but no ketchup is a rule in Chicago (but you can ask for it if you want but just duck when doing it or tell them it is for the fries. lol! When I found Hot Dogs Plus I was overjoyed to find a place that can truly be a place worthy of honors from the windy city. You could pick their beautiful yellow and red building and place it anywhere in Chi-Town and it will do very well. Everything is perfect. They used ALL the correct ingredients. Not ever a complaint and the staff is great. I feel totally at home here. The Italian Beef is good too. That is why I drive once a week from the South side of South Bend to get this taste of home. Stay away from other impostors.... I have been to many of the King Gyros around South Bend. While the gyro are good. They are hit and miss.... each one is run separate and does not have the same ingredients. for instance I ordered a Chicago dog and it had an Oscar Mayer type pork hot dog... yuck! Tossed in the trash! Or no poppy seed bun or too sweet of relish or pepperonchinni peppers. If there dogs would be laughed out of Chicago if they served that there. Same thing at the Root beer place on Logan in Mishawaka... they have a Vienna Beef sign on the building but they gave a Gordon Food Service (GFS) hot dog when I ordered a Chicago dog. I complained and said they should have that sign up if they don't serve it. I was told they only used the Vienna Beef for their Jumbo 1/4 lb dogs. What a shame and disgrace to Chicagoans and their beloved hot dog. All most all places that offer Chicago style hot dogs beware most do not have the right dog or bun or toppings and will never pass for a true "Chicago Style Hot Dog!" NOT EVEN CLOSE! So don't wast a minute when you have the taste for the best dog in the state (That I know of) drive over to Hot Dogs Plus jut over the border in Niles, MI for a true taste of Chicago!!! Cross my heart...I had not eaten a hot dog in almost 20 years. I am a carnivore, just found hot dogs to be gross so chose to avoid them. My new boss took me to Hot Dogs Plus. He is a huge "chicago dog" fan and kept telling me how great their hot dogs were, etc. etc. I didn't have the courage to tell him I didn't want one and was trying to keep in his good graces when he ordered for both of us. I was skeptical but OMG....the chicago dog was SOOOO incredibly good I can't wait to go back. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Cheap too! Like, $2 or $3. Was walking around Notre Dame and wanted to get across the state line to Michigan. Small building on the right, start looking out when you see the Dairy Queen. The food was really good. The staff were so nice. Very helpful and personable; from the time we walked into to leaving 25 minutes later we enjoyed our experience.
