Serah-Marie M.

This is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The manager sat with me for over 30 minutes on my first day and wrote a list of must-visit locations as well as hooking my group up with a local tour guide to show us some off the under-the- radar interesting places and meet some Detroit artists. On our last day we were even treated with a delicious Mexican breakfast. The entire place was very clean, and fairly quiet. Though still friendly, the crowd tends to be mellow - this is not a huge party hostel. It has no pub or food purchase options, but it does have multiple useful and clean kitchens. We stayed in the large bunk room for 6 days and it was comfortable and safe. I was worried about temperature since we visited in a heat wave but the air conditioning was great. Free wifi, a communal computer, lockers, and bike rentals available. I has an fantastic and once-in-a-lifetime trip to Detroit, and Hostel Detroit was a big part of that.

Outstanding hostel that had comfortable beds, very good customer service, clean rooms and speedy wi-fi. There was free luggage storage and free laundry use after 8 PM during my stay (ask staff in advance to use it), lockers, excellent customer service, free parking lot, a tv/movie room, and bikes for rent. It was in a decent location (about 2 miles from downtown) but not a great location if you do not own a car since public transit in Detroit is not good, so be prepared for the slow buses or just use Uber/Lyft - it was about 7-8$ US for a trip to downtown. There was some free breakfast food like bread, peanut butter, coffee etc that was adequate but I have seen better breakfast provided at other hostels in the USA. Overall, this is an excellent hostel that provides a very good value.

Very warm, cozy hostel! It's something you don't experience at HI hostels. The staff is very friendly and you can feel that they're treating you as friends. The hot water is running fine and wifi is good. The space was a little small for a 10 bed dorm room but I won't complain about it. The area doesn't look so heartwarming but it doesn't change the fact that this hostel is awesome!

Never stayed in a hostel before but it was not bad.

Never, never, ever stayed in a hostel before it was like staying in a dorm to be quite frank. It was cheaper than a hotel. They provide you with sheets, towel, and kitchen appliances. Other families stay in the hostel as well. It is very secure they have codes to get into the building. Different codes for each door which made me feel safe. They had a bathroom on each floor but with 20 plus people staying there you have to wait your turn. Wifi was available here. The place did have amazing artwork on the outside of the building. Everyone was nice and made you feel welcome. My overall first experience was a pleasant one.

One of the cozy living rooms. This one is in the back of the 1st floor! It has a library also, with a lot of interesting books.

The location is definitely the highlight, it's right next to Tigers Stadium, close to Ford Field, and within walking distance of the NBA arena, plus tons of great restaurants and bars nearby. If you're in town for a game or event, the location is hard to beat. That said, the hotel itself felt small and a bit cramped. The room was on the smaller side, and the bed wasn't particularly comfortable for a hotel at this price point (around ~$350/night). For that cost, I expected wayyy more space and comfort. One downside was the hotel bar,I couldn't even get a seat and didn't realize you needed a reservation, which was frustrating and took away from the experience. It's not a bad hotel by any means, and it has a cool vibe, but overall it feels overpriced for what you get. Decent stay, great location just not sure the value is there.

I've never stayed in a place with such stringent policies. Ever. As far as the hotel itself goes, it's mediocrely cute, needs some updating and could be amazing. It's just blah. Hotwire gives Roberts Riverwalk 3 1/2 stars which is seriously not true at this point. Negatives: AC does not work in all of the rooms. Check in was terrible took about an hour was actually sent to 2 wrong rooms with the 3rd our final destination but it still wasn't right. One of their issues is their check in process is out of date and they still do everything by paper. Staff - was 50/50 about 1/2 didn't care and was rude and the other half where ok. Rooms are in need of updates and everything is seriously worn for example carpets, fixtures, furniture. It was seriously difficult to get extra sheets for the hose a bed. Attention to detail is lacking, with dirty carpets that need vacuuming, windows that need a wash and general dusting. I'm assuming it's basically it's just run down from years of a lack of a maintenance program. Positives : They did have 24 hour security. It's a really old cool building with lots of potential right on the river. The river walk area seems nice. I was told that they are refurbishing and updating the hotel. The sheets and towels where clean. Soap was provided. If you are staying here good luck! I seriously hope the place gets better. As of the date of this review it's not good.

As soon as I entered - I was greeted with a brief tour and a shot of whisky. The rooms weren't spotless (there was trash in my trash can, spots on the walls, etc). My private room had a closet, a box fan, a desk, a side table, a stained towel, and a subpar twin mattress with one basic pillow. My radiator made hellish noises throughout the night, but the temperature was cozy inside. The location is great - very central within Hamtramck, and walkable to some good restaurants. Parking wasn't always available on Holmes, so I was a little nervous leaving my car around the block. If you're not used to Detroit (or other major cities) - make sure you don't leave anything in your car. The hostel was "fostering" a dog while I was there, and she was not friendly when I passed her in the hall one night - I hope she finds a good home asap. Check-in was more complicated than it needed to be (all instructions left off a critical digit, and I saw several others struggle with the same issue) - the building has also been painted since most of the online photos, so it can leave you scratching your head if you're in the right place. I hope they've fixed the entry code issue instead of expecting guests to figure it out, and I hope they add instructions about the trick to leaving the building... I didn't explore other floors (like the laundry room in the basement, but it's nice they offer on-site laundry) and ultimately - it was a standard hostel: a grungy, affordable place to crash alongside like-minded travelers.

According to one friend, the first 2-3 rooms they tried didn't have working a/c (and it's July, currently). However, their suite was very nice - they had a small sitting room area with a Keurig, mini fridge, and TV, and large bathroom, and then the bedroom area, with another TV and I believe a king-sized bed. The only caveat: the door didn't lock. If you turned the knob upwards instead of down, it unlocked, no key needed. The pool was smallish but overall nice. There were a few large families/groups there, like groups of 5-10 people, but it's a Sunday so I suppose that's why. I ended up using the shower in their room and it was pretty nice, with Dove shampoo and conditioner, but a little slippery. Overall, if I was looking for a Southfield hotel to stay at, I'd consider this one, especially since it has free breakfast, but I'd definitely make sure the door locked.

All my other experience with the staff have been uninviting. Seem to be troubling them to look up from there phones. On my check in day I asked the front desk to address a concern in my room. My smoke detectors (2) have been ripped of the ceiling and covered in a trash bag. 4 days later and 2 times a day I have notified the front desk and been told someone is on there way to fix and no one has done so. My room smells both of cigarettes and weed. Nothing has been done. Their staff did an admirable job in dealing with a sudden emergency. We were sitting around a big table in their Dearborn Conference Room on Friday when around 6:30pm the area was hit with a power outage. Somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 customers lost power, including the hotel. Whatever happened also affected the hotel generator, because that was knocked out too. No heat, no hot water, no electricity, no internet. The hotel staff did what they could and set up emergency contractor lights in the lobby area and dining area. I'm not sure how, but they were able to serve the traditional Embassy Suites hot breakfast the next morning. My visit got off to a great start, with a big suite room and an excellent check-in experience. Some of our party arrived early and we enjoyed their complimentary Happy Hour drinks and snacks. Their staff was wonderful -especially the food service workers who set up that hot breakfast in dim lighting. She informed me of hotel amenities and their hours of operation then directed me to my room. Room was fine, albeit a tad worn. I had a burger in the bar which was very good. Bartender was friendly and efficient. There was a loud, obnoxious woman at the bar who I was able to avoid until I spoke with a man at the bar. Evidently, she was a regular customer. She directed a comment toward me that was factually incorrect and when I attempted to explain to her why, she exploded and started screaming at me. I stepped away, gathered my stuff and waited for my check at the end of the bar farthest from her. She continued screaming at me from across the bar, raving loudly that she would pray for me--which I found particularly bizarre and rather scary. I asked her repeatedly to stop shouting at me. While waiting I had a polite conversation with a man at the end of the bar that I had purposefully placed between she and me. The bartender returned and she finally got her to stop screaming. I paid and left. In the morning at checkout I told the front desk person about my very negative and frightening experience. She apologized and said that they expect people not to "talk politics". I pointed out to her that Fox News was playing on every TV in the lobby and bar and she apologized again. I took the shuttle to the airport. Driver was nice and professional and even tried to help me obtain a cart. Despite other positive aspects of the hotel, I will not be returning to a place that allows crazy people to drink to oblivion then verbally attack other guests.
