That experience was a lot better than expected, and we had planned to return. Plans came to fruition today! We got the Mixed Appy Platter to start. Mains chosen were Goat Masala, Kadai Paneer. 4pc Tandoori chicken, and family size garlic naan. Hearty, tasty, beautifully balanced flavours. Spice level chosen was medium - hot enough to waken your palette but not blow your head off. Ambiance was cozy and quiet, which we LOVE. We tend to eat early, so having the restaurant to ourselves is always a treat. Staff was welcoming and hospitable.

They have a pretty good size menu, so it took awhile to sort through. We ended up with the Vegetable Hakka Noodles, Tandoori Chicken, Family Garlic Naan, Chicken Saagwala, and the Kachumber Salad. The Hakka noodles were delicious, hadn't had these before but would definitely get again, they are actually really good as cold leftovers the next day as well. The Tandoori Chicken was great, bone in and cooked perfectly. Not too spicy, even my daughter ate some. The Family garlic naan really is FAMILY sized, absolutely huge, too big for our small family of three. Really good naan, and pretty impressed they can cook one this size, it paired so well with the chicken saagwala. The chicken mixed with the greens was delicious unlike other dishes we've had, it was probably the favorite dish we ordered. Their kachumber salad was quite nice, cold salad, really fresh feeling and the light seasoning blend they add to it was really nice to balance it out. This is a great spot to get some quality food.

The biryani came with yogurt chutney (bachadi) and we ordered a basmati steamed rice to go with the tikka masala. Pro Tip: there is enough steamed rice for 3 normal people. We ordered medium heat, even though we're used to the hottest because our waiter, Fenil, recommended it. He was right--it was sufficiently hot for us. The food was seriously delicious and I highly recommend you give this place a visit. They also have takeout. The ambiance is casual, quiet (even with the well-behaved children who were there, and the seats were very comfortable. Oh, and the service was great--although Fenil felt more comfortable dealing with my Indian wife when we ordered. Nice demeanor and pleasant experience. I really think you'll enjoy it. With tip and without drinks or dessert, the bill only came to around $66. Go for it; I think you will like it.

Everything tasted great, but everything was oily enough to keep a car going until the next oil change. On a positive note, there was plenty of food in the combo and while we worried about our future health situations, my wife and I enjoyed every morsel. The place is rather small but there was only one other party of four there and one waitress covered the entire restaurant and Uber Eats folks without a problem. They serve beer and wine but we only had pani [water, for those of you who aren't dating or married to an Indian to translate].

We have eaten there once and ordered delivery twice. I tried all 3 times to get a whole tandori chicken (which is listed on the menu). I was told the first 2 times that they only had the leg sections available at the time. The third time was a phone order, and I was told (after the order taker talked to kitchen) that the whole chicken WAS available this time. I was very happy to hear that. However, on receiving the order, I was very disappointed to see that rather than the whole chicken that I was charged for, with 2 leg sections, and 2 breast sections, they gave me 4 leg sections. Not my definition of a whole chicken. Since I prefer the breast meat, I would have ordered something else if they had been forthright about not having breast sections any longer. I also ordered a kale salad and got something with no kale in it at all, not the same salad as I had enjoyed while dining in at their restaurant. I called them about the chicken, and was basically told "tough luck", nothing they could do, not even a refund for getting leg instead of breast. This disregard for customer satisfaction would have earned them a 1 star review, but the food IS flavorful, so they get an extra star for that. Also, avoid the tandoori shrimp, WAY overcooked. Nicely seasoned, but shrimp should not be that tough, especially not at the price they charge. Flavor: good Price: high Customer Service: poor

This small and unpretentious family run [I'm guessing] restaurant serves delicious paper thin dosai, fantastic puttu, medu vada, idli and sambar that will have your wallet send a thank you card. We got there on a Sunday slightly before it opens at 10 am . Oh, and the chutney. Did I mention the chutney? I give it 4 stars only because of the decor. So I had Chicken Kottu Roti for the first time while in university in Montreal at a restaurant called Jolee (which will forever remain my favourite South Indian restaurant of all time - it's still in business at the time of the writing of this review, so if you live in Montreal or are visiting and love Kottu Roti, I highly recommend it) and all Chicken Kottu Roti is compared to this standard, lol. And I have to say, that the Chicken Kottu Roti at Ayini is the closest to Jolee's that I've had! Mind you it's much more expensive, but all food in Ottawa is more expensive than Montreal or Toronto, so I have resigned myself to that. We got the Chicken Kottu Roti ($11.99) and I was surprised to see Momos on the menu, so I got some Chicken Momos ($9.99) as well. The Chicken Kottu Roti had a good level of spice to it. It had a decent amount of meat in it and the cut up roti had a good level of chew to it. It was flavourful and I loved the medium spicy heat to it (which was the default, they did not ask me what spice level I wanted, so I just let them make it the way they normally would). I usually associate Momos with Tibetan or Nepalese restaurants, but apparently India has Momos as well. The Chicken Momos were delicious. They were steamed. The filling was ground chicken and it was mildly spicy. The chili dipping sauce added more heat to it. It came with raw onions and 2 cucumber slices, I guess to cut the heat. I didn't use too much of the dipping sauce, so it wasn't too spicy. The wrapper was soft but still had some chewiness to it, which I liked. I want to try their Chicken 65, Thali, and mutton rolls. Service was courteous. It took about 30 minutes for the food. They have some outdoor seating in front of the restaurant. The address is on Longfields Dr but the restaurant is actually on Via Modugno Ave. The curb on Via Modugno is really high, so passengers opening the car door need to be careful not to scrape the door on the curb. There is no parking lot, so it's street parking only. I highly recommend Ayini for South Indian food in Ottawa/Barrhaven.
