    Bonnier Corporation

Orlando isn't exactly the home of publishing companies, in fact, it's probably not the greatest…read moreplace to land if you're a writer or a journalist, but Bonnier Corporation is one of the few if not the only company that offers print and media services in the Orlando area. This would be awesome, if they were actually friendly, and had a bit more follow through. As a journalist, and editor, I can't recommend this place one bit. My experience with Bonnier is that they simply don't answer emails, or calls, or even in person visits. I have emailed numerous times concerning estimates, and also multiple job postings, which they never answer to. I have applied to a few jobs within this company, and have been left wondering if they were even a real company to begin with. I once applied to a particular job, and included my LinkedIn account, what's funny is, after 2-3 weeks, I had gotten several views of my profile from a manager from that company (don't know if that person knows that you can see who looks at your profile) and absolutely no response as to if I had been considered for the job or not. In fact, I kept receiving views, but no emails. I sent out emails, even called, no one got back to me. I finally sent the manager who had been looking at my profile a message, asking him if the position was still available, or if they had received my application. He later responded with (writing my name wrong) and saying the job was filled months ago. I have no idea why they never bothered to answer any of my emails and let me know that, or why they even had that job posted anyway, if they weren't going to respond. Months later... and the job was still posted online, I actually ended up calling and confirming that indeed, the job was available, so they pretty much just lied to me for no reason. Much later on, I saw another job posted within that company, and was near the office so decided to drop by and ask them if they had any jobs available. A girl who was seated in the front, was incredibly rude and barely wanted to answer my questions, and pretty much sent me off saying they don't have that information, it's all online. She was so rude, I didn't even bother to ask anything else. Point is, this company seems shady. If they treat applicants in such an aloof and unprofessional manner, and don't even bother to let them know if they were hired or not, how can I recommend them to consumers? I simply cannot. I've got an MA in journalism, and have worked with many publications, this is by far some of the strangest and unprofessional behaviour I have witnessed from a publishing company, and honestly, very disappointing. They could be wonderful pioneers in central florida, their layouts and products could be better, but sadly this is not the case. It does seem however, that it is another classic Central Florida "clique" company, where only nepotism rules -hope they change this in the future. For now, I give them 2 thumbs down.

It mostly focuses on entertainment, so if you need to know who's playing where and what the drink specials are, this is your up to date source. Of course, on the back pages you'll find lots of ads for "outcall masseuses" and phone sex lines, but it still has some interesting content. Steve Schneider is sometimes brilliant, Billy Manes is everyones favorite gay scenester, and Happytown and Council Watch can be a fascinating read. Be sure to take the restaurant reviews with a grain of salt, though; although well written, they tend to praise their advertisers. How can you complain, its published every Thursday and its FREE!

The content is really kind of "one track mind", and customer relations and community feedback are ignored often, but if you want to know the best place in town for a beer, burger, or vegan hot dog.... this is the paper to read. Also, know the latest "best friends" in the local music and art scenes by reading the "best of " mentions or local reviews. Just don't forget that it's operating on mostly a buddy system and many fantastic artists in Orlando are often just not credited. Ear and eyes open for the under dogs! ;-) It's an alright ALTERNATIVE paper.
