With the seemingly eminent demise of the Orlando Sentinel daily paper, we are left with Orlando's 'alternative paper,' the Weekly. It mostly focuses on entertainment, so if you need to know who's playing where and what the drink specials are, this is your up to date source. Of course, on the back pages you'll find lots of ads for "outcall masseuses" and phone sex lines, but it still has some interesting content. Steve Schneider is sometimes brilliant, Billy Manes is everyones favorite gay scenester, and Happytown and Council Watch can be a fascinating read. Be sure to take the restaurant reviews with a grain of salt, though; although well written, they tend to praise their advertisers. Not really a fan of many of the views within the paper or the public representations of some of the members of this paper. The content is really kind of "one track mind", and customer relations and community feedback are ignored often, but if you want to know the best place in town for a beer, burger, or vegan hot dog.... this is the paper to read. Also, know the latest "best friends" in the local music and art scenes by reading the "best of " mentions or local reviews. Just don't forget that it's operating on mostly a buddy system and many fantastic artists in Orlando are often just not credited. Ear and eyes open for the under dogs! ;-) It's an alright ALTERNATIVE paper. read more

The Orlando Weekly is the only paper in which I eagerly anticipate it's release. It is Orlando's alternative newspaper that is published every Wednesday. The cover story is always interesting, the columns are great and so are the music, movie and restaurant reviews. My favorite section is Billy Manes' "Blister," which is a weekly column devoted to Orlando's nightlife and events. Manes captures Orlando in a seething commentary that never fails to entertain. And of course the Weekly provides the reader with a dose of savage love, which is a definite must read if not for it's sex educational value than for it's humor. It is also a great resource for goings on, restaurants and bars (behind this website, of course!). read more

This is my default when i'm looking for fun local events, news, and places that would interest me (aside from Yelp, of course). It's a great publication and has some amazing content. Very thorough. I use to look at the Orlando Sentinel, but they scaled back the information that I always look for when trying to find things in the community. Orlando Weekly is really out to educate people on all of the insider highlights that Orlando has to offer, and for that, I solute this publication ;) read more

I love to read. And I love free stuff. So when I am able to combine the two I'm in heaven. Orlando Weekly is the free periodical that comes out each Thursday focusing on the downtown scene of O-town. You can pick one up at storefronts or news stands, Unfortunitely it doesn't get delivered to your home but its usually not too hard to find one around town. Its an alternative read and you'll be sure to learn things in here that the regular paper just isn't going to tell you. Its edgy and controversial but that's its charm. I personally love the section that tells you everything happening entertainment wise from bands to bizarres that will be going on during the week. Judging from the readers letter section O-weekly does get a rise out of some residents and many a furious letter has been printed on these pages, but that just shows you Orlando Weekly isn't afraid to go there. And aren't afraid to get ripped apart, both literally and figuratively. They also have a help wanted section and places for rent in the back that can be helpful to those in need. I've been reading this paper for years. It serves as an excellent guide for things to do in Central Florida. 100% local coverage by local writers too. None of the AP junk. Columns ranging from restaurant/film/music reviews to investigative reporting on local politics to a profile of an interesting person or group. It also features classifieds, which people tend to forget. Lots of job ops, real estate and deals to be had in the paper. Advertisers feature a lot of specials that can't be found any where else.
