I absolutely LOVED my trip to Guadalupe Island on Horizon Charters! It was a once in a lifetime epic adventure that I intend to repeat. Everything about the trip was perfectly coordinated. The owner called ahead of time to make sure I was all set for my trip to San Diego. Upon arriving at the dock, we were warmly greeted and handed a cold beer. The crew were friendly and knowledgeable. The food was great. The beer was cold and plentiful. We saw tons of Great White Sharks. One day we had eight circling the boat at the same time! The crew who run this charter are professionals. Had the pleasure of spending a long weekend with Horizon Charters on San Clemente Island. Amazing first liveaboard experience! Captains Spencer and Cary ran a fantastic ship. Our Divemasters were Will and Frank, Crew Cameron, Tias, and Russ, and last but not least we had Shea and Laura making delicious food in the galley. I had no idea what to expect since this was the first time I spent the night on a boat. Needless to say I was totally blown away! Horizon has everything you could possibly need from comfy bunks to a wonderful staff and a dryer right onboard. Everyone was extremely attentive and friendly which was helpful for a newbie. I felt completely at ease throughout the trip, especially getting in and out of the water. Nitrox fills were anywhere from 29-31% and they even filled my tank for whatever my next dive may be! My wife and I went to Guadalupe Island with Horizon for a Great White Shark cage diving adventure. What a great and exciting experience! The boat is perfect for live-a-board trips. We had 21 divers and 7 crew members and had plenty of space to move around the boat. Cabin Space: My wife and I had a cabin bunk and I was very surprised on the size of the beds. I would say they are a little wider than a full size bed. I'm 6'3 and had enough room to roll around and not fall out. Crew: The crew was top notch, and very friendly! We spoke with Lalo (Dive Master) at length throughout the trip about sharks and he is really knowledgeable about sharks and willing to share his knowledge. The other crew members were just as fun to talk to and learn from. Will and Patrick were tossing bait to the sharks and did a great job trying to pull the sharks near the cage for photos. The crew also did and outstanding job of keeping the boat very clean!! Seriously, I really appreciated their efforts to keep everything clean! They also have a night watch, sounds simple, but I did get out of bed throughout the night to use the restroom and I was very pleased to see a crew member awake moving about the boat. I am very safety oriented and that was extremely important for me to see and they did not fail. Great job guys!! Food: Laura and Shea kicked ass in the kitchen making all the food for us!! They were very friendly and always had a smile on their faces. The timing of meals was perfect and we never went hungry!! Between meals they made sure there were snacks to munch on. Great people to be around. Captains: Cary and Stephen are great captains and of course, fun to be around. Cary prepared some slide shows and help educate us about White Sharks and I personally learned a lot. We rented a GoPro camera because my wife's camera malfunctioned and Cary always made sure she had a charged battery before going into the water. Overall: They not only preach safety but they practice it too. Not only our safety but for the sharks' safety too, and I appreciate that. It was our first time in the boat and first time cage diving with Great White Sharks and we had a BLAST!! I have no complaints about this trip and only positive things to say about the boat and its crew!! We had such a great time, my wife wants to go again. Future plans in the works. read more

This is a stand up organization. I have been booked on a trip to Guadalupe Island for around 6 months. Cage diving with Great Whites is something i have always wanted to do. Unfortunately, something came up and I needed to cancel. Patric, my contact, refunded me in full with no questions asked. I offered to leave a deposit towards a 2023 trip, but he said there was a lot of room and time to book. He then told me to do it when it would be easier for me. (The trips are a big financial commitment.) Incredibly considerate and really helpful. I do look forward to a trip at a later date. The experience of a lifetime for this city kid. Everything from the magnificent White Sharks and other undersea life to the Island's unique geology, to living onboard the boat. It is worth the money, including a generous tip like you were on Below Deck. My dad left me a modest sum. He was an avid fisherman, I was not. I figured it an apropos tribute to him to take some of that and go fishing, just on the other end of the rod, reel, and hook. :) Do it. Just, do it. You will never forget it nor will you ever sail with a more qualified crew November 8-13, 2019. Yes, this was a one-off but I seriously may repeat it next year. I went on one of the Guadalupe Island Shark Diving trips with my father this past summer (2018). It was an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! The registration process was incredibly personal--we always received personal phone calls and emails from the organizer to inform us about the trip and gather information from us as well. Before we even arrived in San Diego we felt like we were going to take a trip with old friends. Once on the boat, the crew was beyond professional and incredibly friendly. Within the first few hours, crew members were already calling us by name. Crew members were also very knowledgeable about the sharks and the island, which added an educational experience to the adventure. Even though this is an 80-foot vessel that is set up for functionality, accommodations were surprisingly comfortable--very clean and cozy! And the food! Every meal caused me to eat way too much because everything was fantastic. Breakfast was made to order every morning, which was a lovely personal touch. Shout out to Mark and Shea for being the best chefs on the ocean! Everything about this trip--the crew, the accommodations, and the sharks (which of course Horizon can't control, but I believe that they know some secrets)--was awesome! If you are looking for well run, safe multi-day dive boat, this is the one for So. Cal. We just spent 3 days out at the Channel Islands and had a fantastic time. I have done many multiple day boat trips out to the Channel Islands and this was by far the best run trip I have been on. The trip to Guadelupe with Great Whites is a very serious trip that above all else requires PROFESSIONALISM! Everything else is a bonus. You need the best and the team that knows what they are doing. First off, just book this trip. They are the best, PERIOD. From start to finish, top to bottom they will surpass your expectations. Plus, no other charter leaves directly from San Diego (no one wants to take a bus to Ensenada). Boarding Night. My wife and I wanted to be one of the first to board, so we got to the H&M landing right before 9pm. We figured if it was first come first serve on the bed situation, we would want to have first dibs. Even though we were technically early, we were the last of 18 totally guests to board lol. Dive Master Will was waiting for us at the pier and walked us down to the boat. After they took our luggage, we were shown our living quarters and we did some quick paperwork in the galley. For our bed situation, we had two bunkbeds that were accessed via a small wooden sliding door. One of the bunks was about the size of a full bed and the other was a twin. Prior to departing the pier, each guest was fitted with a wetsuit and assigned a storage bin to keep it in on the main deck. After some quick intro's from the staff and a safety talk, we were on our way. Since they were serving alcohol immediately upon boarding, I took advantage and had a beer while mingling with the other guests. Is it okay to chase your Dramamine with a beer? Mehh, who cares. Sea Day I was woken up by the smell of bacon cooking in the galley, YESSSSSSS (sorry not sorry vegetarians). Personally, that is my preference of smells to wake up to. I'm not exactly sure what time it was, but the sun was out and the reflection off the ocean was beautiful! For breakfast, they will make eggs to your preference, there was bacon, sausage and banana pancakes. They also had a selection of cereal, pasteries, fruit and plenty of beverages. At about 9am, we made a quick stop in Ensenada, so quick in fact I didn't even get to see the customs officials jump on board. After leaving Ensenada, we got to see some playful dolphins taking advantage of our wake and the opportunity to race the front of the boat. Captain Spencer was very willing to slow down the boat to give us an up-close look at these awesome pods. This part of the trip was a great opportunity to catch up on some reading or take in the sights. We were lucky enough to have Dr. Craig O'Connell on our trip (seen on Shark Week many times). It was way cool to be able to bombard a humble expert with all your shark questions. Dive Day 1/2 We woke up and were anchored on the northeast side of Guadalupe Island, and oh my, is the scenery breathtaking. Standing out on the deck, looking at the island and the deep blue water that I have seen so many times on Shark Week was indescribable. It didn't take long for one crew member to point out a White Shark that was cruising by the boat. HOLY COW it was huge. I couldn't believe their size, TV really doesn't do them justice. I asked a crew member how big he thought it was and he guessed 9 feet. Wow, that isn't even that big for this island at this time of year (we would see much larger sharks as the trip went on). The Crew was busy lowering the cages, and again, breakfast was in full swing. Breakfast was the same, except this morning there was a choice of French Toast, yummmmm. Once the cages were set, it was game time! They broke us into two groups and each group got into the water for 60 minutes. This worked out perfect, right about the time I need a snack or a drink, it was time to switch. You'd get up on deck, dry off, grab a quick snack and before you realized it you were rotating back into the cage. I can't express how amazing it was to see these HUGE sharks as they gracefully cruised in and out of our field of vision. Visibility was GREAT and the watery temperature (even in November) was fine. There were a few guests who needed some extra help getting their wet suits on and getting comfortable in the water. The crew did a great job taking the time to assist these guests and get them confident in the cages. We finished the day/evening with a BBQ and a presentation from one of the shark experts on board. There is nothing hanging out on a boat, sitting back, watching the sun disappear over the island as Shay works the BBQ on deck. Ahhhhhh amazing day! The crew did an amazing job the whole trip. They were on top of everything and really made the difference between the trip being great, and being amazing. My wife and I will absolutely be taking this trip again! I just got back from diving with the great white sharks at Guadalupe Islands and had an AWESOME time. I have been diving since 1994 and am extremely well travelled. I have been aboard many boats and have gone diving with several charter companies, and Horizon is by far the best live-aboard EVER. The crew are not only professional, friendly and do their jobs well, they are nice fun people and are a real pleasure to socialize with. The sleeping compartments were spacious and comfortable; no complaints there. I have stayed on boats with beds half the size so I was really happy. The boat was clean and they guys clean it several times a day. The food was amazing, in fact better than what I eat at home. They have everything on board you would forget to bring from home i.e. seasick pills, ear plugs, an extra toothbrush, you name it. They not only like to show guests a good time, but they are educators and eco conservationists who do an amazing job enlightening guests about the animals and environment we dive in without being pushy or preachy. This was the best dive trip I have ever taken and I plan to go again! read more

This is a really nice boat to dive. They run a bigger crew than most and it shows. You feel like there is enough staff to take care of you and keep things super safe at anytime. Most of the crew seems crossed trained so there are like 4 people who could jump in can handle anything that could come up. I went on a 2.5 day trip to San Clemente. They pump 21% and 32ish%. with a mem type system. The ventilation system is good in the bunks. There is a ton of room on the dive deck. They float the chase boat just in case when divers are in the water. The food was really great. as soon as you pop up there were eyes on you and the take your safety seriously. Everything seemed to be clean and in good working order. They worked to keep the heads clean all the time. There is room for boxes and dive bags. read more

What a great trip! We did the San Clemente Island dive trip. We left on Friday night and stayed in a cabin for the boat ride out there. Which was nice to have and a great option for the trip. When you wake up a great breakfast waiting for you and you are on the first dive location. I can not fully express how easy the crew made our dive trip. There was always a member of the crew willing to help us with gear, get on/off the boat, and just generally around for questions. I also want to call special attention to how good the food is as well, Mark does an excellent job in the galley. Diving with this boat is really a great time. You get to dive some fantastic spots that are secluded and amazing. Moral of the story: We will be chartering another trip. read more

Just got back from a San Clemente trip. This is a top-flight dive boat. Fantastic crew...they were on top of EVERYTHING, and humorous, intuitive, as friendly as could be. Food was great, and Mark(?) in the kitchen has a million stories. He should start a blog. Boat size is nice, too. Never really felt overly crowded, despite having a booked charter. Got really lucky with a smooth ride out and back...I was bunked in the front of the boat on the top, and I coulda swore the boat wasn't even moving at times, while we were actually underway. I just got back from the Guadalupe Island Shark Dive and wanted to write a review while it was still fresh in my mind. Horizon Charters runs a very professional and safe operation. Captain Spencer, Captain Cary, crew members Lalo, Ryan and Will and galley staff Laura and Shea made the long boat ride fun and interesting. They always made sure we knew everything that was going on and took the time to chat and answer questions one on one. Needless to say, seeing white sharks up close is an experience of a lifetime and the crew kept us safe both inside the cages and on the boat. The cabins are comfortable, the food is great (I would describe it as comfort food) and the MV Horizon is a great long range, liveaboard boat. They have been taking people on scuba diving adventures since 1980 and white shark diving for 20 years, so they know what they're doing. If I decide to return to Guadalupe Island, I would only consider going there with Horizon Charters. read more

I was on a dive trip at San Clemente on the Horizon May 7th - 10th with power scuba. The service and safety standards were excellent. You could really see that this crew had great experience with divers. It shows in tons of details, how they help you in and out of the water, how they check every diver at the gate and keep track of the whereabouts of every person on board during dives. They refilled my tank with 31-32% Nitrox right after every dive and sent me home with a full tank too. They knew all the nice dive spots at San Clemente and kept the boat in calm waters as much as possible. Kudos also to the cook, great food! For the night I was sleeping well in a bunk bed which was clean and comfortable enough. Unlike on other boats there was enough space for my stuff and clearly organized. I will definitely dive with the Horizon again and I can highly recommend it. read more

I did the Isla Guadalupe dive with Horizon through Shark Diver and I am going to try and do this review without curse words. It was that awesome! This crew is great. From the captain, the cook, the deck hands, dive instructors, everyone was amazing. Not only were they professional, knowledgable, personable, but they were also hilarious! I almost felt uncomfortable about how they cater to your every needs. The food was amazing, your safety and comfort is their main priority. During meals, the captain would even come around refill your drinks, take your dirty plates, etc. They know the good spots for Great Whites on the island to the point that on my trip, there wasn't a single dive where I did not see at least one Great White (I did almost 20)! read more

It has been a few years, but I used to dive the boat 3 or 4 times a year. The latest group was the absolute worst ever. Other than the cook (Mark), the crew was unprofessinal to say the least, arrogant, rude, and basically acted like a frat boy boat. They called us names, smoked right in our faces, chased skirts right in front of us, insulted people while they ate, and the list goes on and on. They used to have professional captains as well, but their new guy plays frat games with the arrogant crew and basically if they like you, it's ok, but if they don't like you, they'll harass you. Not worth the time or effort to go back on this boat, and that's a shame, because Mark's the absolute best, and their Captains used to be good. read more

Took 13 high school boys on a five night dive trip. It could have been awful. It was a delight, largely because of the expertise and the consideration of the crew. They picked the most beautiful dive sites and were willing to help with anything we needed. The food was delicious and plentiful (even with teenage eating machines) and there were always snacks to keep blood sugar high after dives. This is a first class operation. read more

Just did a Thurs. night thru Sunday San Clemente Island trip. Despite a medical emergency that necessitated a temporary return to port, we had a great time and enjoyed some wonderful food and marvelous dives. The entire crew was very friendly and helpful right from our arrival at the dock, loading all our gear for us and getting us settled. Bunks are furnished with linens and blankets; showers provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The boat traveled most of the night to San Clemente Island so we could start diving early Friday. Friday morning, we'd made one dive. We were about 10 minutes into our second dive when we heard the boat's recall siren. We surfaced, rejoined the boat and discovered that a lady who'd stayed below all morning (not diving) was now up on the deck, on a backboard and on oxygen. Her husband had found her passed out below. (Once the crew were sure she was stable, she was moved inside to the floor of the galley, where there was a little more space.) The Horizon crew was very professional and skilled in handling this emergency. They were in continual communication with the Coast Guard. They did an excellent and tactful job of crowd control, and were kind and attentive to the patient. Since her condition was improving and not life-threatening, the CG's advice was for the Horizon to take her back to Point Loma. We spent the 6 hours' return to port chillin' on the sundeck, eating lunch and snacks, reading or telling dive stories, and watching the occasional pod of dolphins. The crew offloaded the patient (who was sitting up by then) and her husband, made sure they were OK to head off for the ER or Urgent Care, the captain did some paperwork with the CG and we headed right back out for the island, again traveling overnight to get there. The rest of the trip was simply wonderful. Horizon's food is terrific; lots of fresh fruits and veggies, they always had a selection for non-red-meat eaters (including some fresh-caught yellowtail), and plenty of choices for breakfast. We received excellent dive briefings and the DMs were attentive. The crew took excellent care of my (non-diver) husband; he snorkeled and kayaked while we dove, spotting tope sharks, bat rays and even a bald eagle. At trip's end, not only was the fuel surcharge not very high (and my gosh, they'd made TWO round trips to San Clemente), they gave us a hefty reduction on our weekend's nitrox fee (way more than was called for by the few dives we missed) We were very impressed - with the food, the diving and kayaking, and most of all with the crew's emergency-management skills and their concern for the safety, enjoyment and well-being of the divers. We went to Guadalupe Island with Horizon Charters to dive with great white sharks at the beginning of August 2018. We had a great time. I would definitely recommend this operator to other people who want to dive with great whites. The captain and crew took great care of all the divers, and they delivered an unforgettable experience with plenty of shark action, at a reasonable price. We were on Horizon's first trip of the 2018 season to Guadalupe Island. Finding the landing and the boat in San Diego was easy, and it was nice to be able to embark from a port in the U.S. No worries about traveling to Mexico. The boat was comfortable and had everything we needed for a short live-aboard dive trip. It was comparable to other boats I've been on for trips of similar duration. We were fortunate in that the ride to Guadalupe Island was fairly smooth. After we anchored on the lee side of the island, it was very calm for our three days of diving. The trip back to San Diego was a bit rockier, but not bad. For those who tend to get motion sickness, be sure to get the patch or take some motion sickness OTC drug. The cabins were cozy, clean, not fancy, but very comfortable We spent three days diving and were in the cages for 4 to 6 hours each day (usually 1 hour at a time, but sometimes 2). We saw sharks on every dive. We could also see the sharks when we were on the deck of the boat. This time of year there were sub-adult sharks present. They were fairly curious and active, and we were able to take many great pictures and videos from inside the cages. We saw sharks circling the bait and the cages, sizing each other up, attacking the bait from the side near the surface, and shooting up from the blue depths below to attack the bait and breach the surface of the water. We brought our own Go-pro, but the boat also had them for rent. The water was clear, awesome visibility, and we were able to take some amazing pictures and videos of the sharks. The captain and crew complied with regulations (pulling the cages out of the water at night so that there is no accidental entrapment of sharks or other animals) and were focused on conservation and education. They repeatedly emphasized that great whites are not the mindless killing machines depicted in movies and on TV. They used fish heads on ropes as bait, which turned out to be very effective at attracting sharks, and is safer for the sharks than chum (since chum could trigger a frenzy in which sharks might injure each other). The crew was knowledgeable and included a guide who has worked with great white sharks for 14 years. Horizon had a good setup for shark diving, with the cages attached to the back end of the boat, with the top of the cage at the surface of the water. This meant that we didn't need to breathe from tanks. We used regulators on hoses hooked up to an air supply from the boat. We were just below the surface during the dives, which eliminated many of the risks associated with scuba diving (e.g., decompression illness, out of air, squeeze / reverse squeeze). Anyone who wanted to end a dive early could simply climb up the ladder out of the cage and get back on the boat. This setup makes it easy for people who aren't scuba certified to dive with sharks. At the start of the trip, the dive guide went over basic skills (such as mask clearing) with the divers who weren't scuba certified. Horizon provided all the gear for the dive. We brought our own masks, but the boat had some, too. Horizon provided 7 mm wet suits, booties, hoods, gloves - these all happened to be brand new at the start of this season, so our group was the first to wear them. They also provided weights for each diver (to enable us to stand on the floor of the cage instead of floating up). The captain and crew were so passionate about the Great White Sharks and such a great group of people who made sure we stayed safe and comfortable. The food on the boat was excellent, too. The fact that we were away from land didn't seem to limit the chef at all. Fantastic meals all day long. Snacks in between, never were hungry. The all included alcoholic drinks were just icing on the cake. Horizon has been going to Guadalupe Island for a long time, and it was neat to hear from the more seasoned crew members how the shark diving scene has developed. No wonder they have Cal State University, Discovery Channel crew, Sea-camp San Diego etc. on board with them from time to time. As a bonus, we got to see some fur seals and elephant seals from afar when we were leaving the island, as well as a pod of bottle-nose dolphins who swam along with the boat, and later a whale on the trip the back to San Diego. I was amazed to find they hadn't been reviewed yet so here goes. I've been a customer of Horizon Charters for 10 years now, and every time I go out with them I feel like part of the family. The crew aboard Horizon, is the best in California. I've dived live aboard and day boats from Monterey to San Diego and they are hands down the friendliest and most competent in California and are on the same level as the larger world wide companies, from my experiences. Mark, their chef, has been with them for something like 18 years. That should tell you something. This was my 2nd trip to Guadalupe Island with Sharkdiver.com on board the Motor Vessel Horizon. I thought last year was pretty awesome, but this year was even better. We had new larger cages, new rotation schedule that allows more time in the water, and tons of sharks. I love this company as they are all passionate about the conservation of sharks and wildlife in general, and both Captain Spencer and Martin Gaff really help you understand these White Sharks, and appreciate them for what they really are, majestic, beautiful animals. If you're ready for the adventure of a lifetime and want some really stellar people to do it with, look no further (or is it "farther"... I never know). The great white sightings and proximity alone are worth every penny and hour of plane time, but add on to that a crew with knock-your-socks-off service and an intimate knowledge of the sharks, food so good you'll wonder how on earth it was prepared on a boat, and star gazing that will having you second guessing your sanity in wanting to return to your normal life. Yup, it's that good. And let me just reiterate how amazing the crew are-- (this is embarrassing to admit) a couple fellow divers and I had a conversation one night about how much we loved the people on our trip, which begged the question, "if we got stranded on Guadeloupe island, who would we sacrifice first?" Great dive boat with a super crew and food. To be clear this is for serious scuba divers as it is all about getting 4-5 solid dives a day. I. Have done 6.
