I'm a late riser and was looking for a place still serving breakfast, where I could also get a good mocha latte (my favorite!) This place hit the mark! The inside of the cafe is so cute and welcoming! They have a couch and a comfy chair, and a little gift shop too! And their baked goods looked mouthwatering, but I resisted them as I'm trying to watch my sugar intake! Their menu is great, I got the egg and veggie patty breakfast sandwich which came with the option of roasted potatoes or a salad! A great option!! I chose the salad which was a refreshing balance and allowed me to get some greens in with my first meal of the day! The mocha latte was delicious and so was the food! This is for a semi-custom cake review. First, they offer semi-custom cakes made to order via their website. I chose chocolate cake with salted caramel filling and buttercream outside. Added extra macarons, fresh flowers, and gold leaf. Also paid to get a colored buttercream (lavender). Cake tasted fresh and moist. Salted caramel was rich and buttery. Buttercream was as expected. Food tasted so-so; the portion size was super small. For example, the tuna melt croissant sandwich was no more than 1/3 of the croissant sandwich served in Pekara Bakery & Bistro... The best were breakfast sandwich and granola+yogurt. Because of the small sizes. their dishes were too pricey. So it's not very likely for me to come here often. What this restaurant does good at is its vibe and the appearance of the dishes. As soon as you walk into it, you are greeted with all kinds of small, colorful and lovely decor. Their restroom is painted pink, and had cute baskets etc. inside as well. Food is also served in a delicate, Ins-style way (except their tiny sizes). Hopscotch is THE cutest bakery in the Champaign area! Their interior is always beautifully decorated and the speciality items are made to align with the season. The workers are always so kind and helpful with your every need. For food, I absolutely love their soft cinnamon rolls and flaky croissants which are 100% worth coming back for. On Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I got to try the matcha panna cotta which was just melt in your mouth amazing! However, I would not recommend ordering from their all-day food menu, since they excel the most in their pastries and baked goods. They also offer options for custom made cakes which is something worth noting. As for drinks, I've tried their matcha horchata latte over the summer which tasted a bit water down, but they do have better and stronger coffee selections. A note to the wise-- there is very limited indoor seating and parking lot spaces, but options for street parking in the neighborhood. I would love to see this place expand to cater to the large audience it attracts since it has so much potential. Although Hopscotch is not necessarily the best for studying or sitting down to eat a full-on brunch, it's ideal for stopping by to pick up a delicious pastry every now and again! read more

Don't waste your money on Hopescotch cakes! I got an 8inch vanilla cake with matcha buttercream icing from Hopscotch. The cake looked great but it was THE worst experience in terms of flavor and texture. the cake sponge was clearly stale, very dense, and smelled really bad. The icing on the top was also so stiff that it fell apart when cutting the cake. I specifically asked the lady at the cashier that I want a fresh cake and this was far from being fresh. I didn't expect Hopscotch to sell this quality of cake. I felt really embarrassed in the party seeing everyone finding their way to the trash can to get rid of their slice. I have contacted the store and nobody responded, next step is to take the leftover cake to the store and ask the owner to try it out! Update: I stopped by the store and explained the problem; the manager was very rude and said she choose to refuse a refund because of my review! Customer service on par with cake quality! Interesting fact, when I was there to complain, the other two cakes from yesterday were still there waiting for the next poor customer. I've been going to hopscotch 2-3x a week just for their chocolate croissant. It certainly WAS the best in town: the buttery crust, gooey-exploding chocolate, and sea salt on top *chef's kiss*. Recently, I noticed the differences in the chocolate croissants. Some days, they were 1/2 size of what I would normally get. From this past weekend, the color of the chocolate croissants looked SEVERELY UNDERBAKED (photo attached in comparison with their regular chocolate croissant). Without giving it too much thought, I still took one to-go, only to find out that it was underbaked, and tasted so flour-y that I had to toss it. The other day, I ordered another chocolate croissant around 1 p.m. and couldn't help but notice that it tasted a day(s) old. I am not entirely sure if it was actually days old or if they overbaked it that day. However, the lack of quality control in this bakery is disappointing. Regardless of size, quality, and taste, I have stayed loyal and paid their set price of $6.14 because I assumed the bakery was having an off-day. However, when you encounter more than one or two instances of poor products, it's not "just" an off-day. read more

Stuff here is relatively pricy and looks like it would taste good, but everything is just so bland and...cold. Pre-warming (or at least offering to warm) bakery items for people dining in would go a long way. I custom-ordered a birthday cake from Hopscotch a few weeks ago for my wife. They were referred to me by my sister-in-law who loves to bake, so I had reached out to Hopscotch without delay. After visiting their website, I attempted to call them, but received no answer. Then I noticed the online ordering system for custom cakes, so I went ahead with that. It was smooth and easy with plenty of options given for your cake. I specified a date and time for pick-up, made my payment, and was done within minutes. Before retrieving the cake, I read reviews of Hopscotch on Google and Yelp, and saw how varied they were. It seemed like a roll of the dice on how the cake would turn out. So what was the verdict? Well, a quick preface: When I arrived for pick-up, the cake was in their refrigerator with my name on the box. The woman who served me took it out, opened the box to ensure everything was how I requested, and gave me some tips: Keep it refrigerated; leave it out in room temperature for 6-7 hours before serving; and it should be good for 7 days. The cake was delicious. Most importantly, my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. To us, the 6-7 hour wait time made all the difference. The cake did seem dry and crumbly if served too cold. We finished the entire thing in 8 days. So, we are fans, but keeping in mind that it is only one cake. We will see how they do the next time! read more

We stayed at the air bnb above this bakery and just had to try it. It's in a charming neighborhood in Champaign just a block off of Prospect Ave and across the street from Southside Elementary School. There's a small parking lot and plenty of street parking available. Inside you will find an adorable bakery and cafe. We went in around 9am on a Friday and the place was ours. There's seating available if you would like to enjoy your treats in house. We ordered carry out to share with some friends and family. 2 cinnamon rolls, 2 tomato and herb quiche, 2 bagels and cream cheese. I split a quiche and one of the jug ge cinnamon rolls with my husband. They were both well made and the cinnamon roll was delicious! I wish they had a few more savory breakfast items but their traffic might be lighter on weekdays..? They had some baked desserts that looked amazing and some unique drinks you won't find just anywhere like a brown sugar and fig latte. I also noticed hand made marshmallows! They sell specialty food items and gifts as well. This place is really cute and seems to have a little bit of everything. A great little place to escape the chilly Illinois weather! I stopped in here for coffee with a friend one day, had never tried this spot but have heard good things (and really wanna check out The Literary as well!) We went in and it was so cute and intimate, a little bar near the window, some tables in the corner to work at, and a nice comfy couch with a gorgeous coffee table in the middle of the space. The walls were lined with various jams, cocktail mixes, teas, and coffees you could buy to try. A great little area to peruse while waiting for your coffee and food. I ended up ordering the Salted Orange Mocha and my friend got a Plain Black Coffee, I paired my yummy mocha with a decadent ooey-gooey salted caramel brownie and a flakey buttery classic croissant. The brownie was so rich and the salted caramel balanced it out nicely so the chocolate wasn't too overpowering. The croissant was very buttery and had a nice crisp flakey outside. The inside was fluffy and had those beautiful croissant layers you look for. My mocha really shocked me, surprisingly I don't typically like chocolate and orange together but I do love trying new things. The orange in this is super soft and doesn't have quite the punch I thought it would, it dances over your tongue and gets enveloped by the mocha. It's a very subtle concoction and I would definitely order it again! Overall this was a great coffee spot and it wasn't too crowded when we went in the afternoon. I think it may be a little overlooked with all the coffee shops on campus and downtown Champaign, I definitely think Hopscotch needs more recognition especially with all their cool coffee creations. This is a lovely corner cafe and coffee shop with a small but nice selection of baked goods and great coffee. You order at the counter and they bring the items to your table. You can get your coffee in proper ceramic mugs, which is great. There is a ample seating in an attractive setting. Service was fast and efficient. I had an excellent cappuccino and a delicious quiche with goat cheese and tomatoes. There is a daily quiche and the cinnamon buns looked amazing as well. Placed blame on customer Backstory: I ordered Thanksgiving dessert via their website and selected a date option for pickup. One of those dates available was for Thursday, Nov 24th and I selected that date. I even got email confirmation as well as text message to confirm this. (They later dismissed this as "YOU selected that date, we didn't") However, I noticed the morning of the 24th that I got a text just one day prior that the pick up date changed to the 23rd. I had family from out of town and was hosting and didn't notice the text until it was too late. I had already had in my mind the pick up date was the 24th. The bakery was closed that day so we didn't have our desserts. I went in 2 days later to figure out what happened and to potentially get a refund. I was really trying to be nice and cordial about the situation. However, the girl I spoke with (i think she was the owner) was immediately very combative and argumentative from the beginning and accused me that it was my fault for not picking up the desserts based on their store hours. She also added that "all the other 100 customers that placed their orders were able to pick them up on the dates given." I asked her why there was even an option to select the 24th as a pick up date and she said they didn't know so it's not on them and it's all our fault. I called her out on why she's giving me so much attitude (she wouldn't let me really speak) and she said she's not and it's basically all our fault we didn't pick up the desserts since everyone else was able to. What kind of service is that for a small business? They didn't take any ownership for the mixed up dates at all and was upset that they had to pay for the cost of the desserts. (She actually told me this) No empathy or apology at all. But the real cherry on top was she actually LIED to my face and told me they already issued the refund when they didn't. I know this because I checked my bank account right when she told me and it wasn't there. But as soon as I got home, I got an email notification for the refund and it showed up on my account. (What a coincidence) So they didn't issue the refund until after I left the store. Needless to say, I fully believe Hopscotch does not care at all about the people giving them their business based on my experience and also from reading other reviews. Clearly the owner needs to take a refresher on hospitality and customer service. read more

I have been following along on their Instagram for months and couldn't have been more excited to try Hopscotch. Although you sadly can't go inside right now they have done their best to make it a pleasant experience even while waiting outside. With both online and in-person order options they have made getting fresh baked goods during these crazy times a breeze. The employee I interacted with during my visit was kind and very friendly, happy to give me her recommendations when I asked and was super patient while I figured out what I wanted. I got the Plum and Pistachio Croissant and a Honey Miso Latte. Both were amazing! It is definitely on the pricey side but for handmade quality products you definitely get what you pay for. I've never really had a good experience with Hopscotch in the past, so decided to give it another go after winning a gift card from a game night. However I do like the idea and the location and it's nice to have a bakery in town like this. First thing to know though is the staff is generally rude and if you have questions - lord help you because they'll either act like you're dumb or act like their life is ruined by you asking anything. Second thing to know : DO NOT ORDER COFFEE. Just don't - it tastes sour .. somehow. Just go somewhere else.. Third: do not get bakery items such as cakes or muffins- will 100% always be dry I recommend the lemon bar or bread pudding when it's available. The ambiance is really cute but I think that's what draws people. They also sell fun little things like notebooks, stickers and even kitchen supplies which are great for gifts. Their website is also user friendly right now due to Covid, but remember you cannot go in and browse. Overall it was exactly as expected. Mediocre quality and a cute aesthetic. read more
