Thank goodness for our healthcare system! The General is simply amazing. I am so very grateful to…read moreall of the emergency room doctors, nurses, auxiliary staff, security officers, and the kind folks in imaging.
At the height of the 1st wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, back in April 2020, in the middle of the night, my grandma's hand slipped when she tried to get up from the toilet after peeing and she fell and busted her head open. She was rushed to MGH and they did imaging, put four stitches in her head and discharged her ... all of that in under 90 minutes.
I was so taken aback by a phone call from my grandma at 2AM saying that she had fallen and was bleeding profusely. I biked over there faster than I ever had biked before to find my 94 year old Nana wrapping a second towel around her head. The first towel was sopping wet with blood and there was blood everywhere.
I almost leapt out of my skin.
Now, my grandma is a tough as nails, a strong as a horse, and a stubborn as an ass type of old school person. She was born in 1926 and sat in front of her property in Guyana with a loaded shotgun for 40 days to protect herself and her three babies from looters and rioters during a general strike after independence from the British. And she hates going to the hospital.
So she wasn't going to the General without a big conversation first.
I called 911 first and then started negotiations with my stubborn grandma to reason with her to go to hospital. She finally agreed moments before the paramedics arrived.
These two paramedics were incredibly kind and skilful. They treated my grandma impeccably and communicated to her in English with warmth and attention. Now, remember this was at the height of the 1st COVID-wave in the city; the swamped hotspot hospitals were Verdun and Lachine. Which is exactly where the emergency dispatch wanted to send my grandma. The paramedic relayed this to me, shaking her head diplomatically, to which I said absolutely no way! She fought for me with that dispatch person. That paramedic may have saved my Nana's life for not taking her to Verdun or Lachine. She actually explained to me afterwards that she negotiated with the dispatch so hard and "used a favour and squeezed her in the queue at the General" ... faith in humanity restored!
It was really sad having to let my grandma go to the emergency all by herself but she understood why and so did I and we felt very safe and comfortable with the paramedics. So off she went to the General.
Literally, I didn't even have enough time to get home, take a shower, and finish telling Rebecca everything that had happened before the hospital called to say that she had been seen by the attending physician, had had imaging done to rule out concussion or other head injury, had gotten four stitches, had been discharged and was ready to go.
I barely had time to hop in a taxi.
I was so relieved to see how expediently my grandma's head was treated. I am so grateful and thankful for the service that she received. And my Nana thanks the staff at the General as well.
Y'all rock the awesomeness of cool. Much love and thanks to you all for your service.
We need to pay nurses, paramedics, and healthcare auxiliary workers way more money.
