Stopped here on the way to the Saguenay Fjords National Park. Very good food, especially for bar food. These people take their food prep seriously. Note to Anglophones ~ they don't speak English here. Hey, that's ok, it's their country, but keep that in mind going in. I've found that once you get out of Montreal and Quebec City, most people speak French only. I was fortunate that my wife speaks some French. We ordered the mac n cheese, duck poutine, sausage platter, and Caesar salad. The mac n cheese was quite good. The sausage platter was very tasty, but petite for the price in my opinion. The duck poutine had an awesome flavor, but the fries were a little overdone. The Caesar salad had a very mild flavor, perhaps too mild, but I like my Caesar salad to be strong. It might just be my taste. I also tried one of their in house beers. I'd definitely recommend trying one if you visit. Overall, the food here is tres bien. Bar food in the US usually consists of fried everything, so this was a nice contrast. If you're in Saguenay, it is certainly worth a stop. read more

Food and drinks were amazing, staff was very friendly and we got by speaking English just fine.

Some reviewers mentioned English language difficulties here, but we absolutely found that NOT to be the case. Staff was English fluent and functional (not that they necessarily need to be), and food/beer selection was fantastique! Extremely friendly and accommodating. I so much want to offer more ... and maybe they did too. Beer was fantastic, had the IPA and IIPA with tastings. The staff could not have been more nice. Now the Food ... blah and 1/2. Started with Salmon appetizer which tasted like canned Salmon. Presentation was beautiful - on blue slate plate and expertly decorated but well canned Salmon is not good. Then the pizza. Guys you have a wood burning oven, use it! The pizza was flavorless and soggy. Judges ruled; go for the beer NOT the food. Sorry Hopera .... still to your strengths, beer. read more

Review for May 12, 2015. He Said: Fate was at play here. She and I visited Quebec for a week, but our stay through Saguenay was not set in stone. Unlike our normal plan, we drove in with the idea to find somewhere to stay. However! A friendly bartender in QC told us of friends at this place, so it was in our minds. We drove in to town and used some apps to find a B&B--about 4 blocks from Hopera. Score. She decided to stop at a bookstore and I moved straight on. My broken French was handled with great patience by the bartendress and I managed to get a beer and a water. This place is great in so many ways. The beer is really quite good. A few months removed from our visit means it's tough to remember what we had. We do know it was a lot. The brick oven pizza was fantastic. Local veggies, excellent crust. The Canadiens were on TV, in a loss unfortunately, but it made for a great atmosphere. She Said: My memory is fuzzy on this place (blame the beer!), but I remember enjoying both the beer and the pizza, and I was especially happy to have both after some time at the bookstore nearby. All in all, I would love to visit Saguenay again just to visit Hopera. Well. Plus the fact that Saguenay is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and was pleasantly surprised by this modern restaurant that can be found in this tiny city! Although it is not necessarily chic, it was a good place to get some great food. Especially in a town that offers many fast food and diner options. The food itself was delicious! Portions were great, and pizzas were topped with fresh ingredients. Everything was seasoned to perfection! I typically don't like pizza crust, but here, I couldn't get enough of it. The crust was the right amount of crispy and chewy, and there was a great balance of flavours. The waiter realized we were anglophones, and instead of immediately speaking english to us, he asked if we would like to be spoken to in French or English. I really appreciated that!
