One day I will go on a tour, but for now... the grounds are divine and the exhibit beautiful. A great place full of inspiration and many presidents have been here to do business and sign monumental legislation!! A retreat and a bird sanctuary. Oh my so breath taking. Closed in June re opens in September busiest months... Feb and March. Let's make this year a better year for ethics and peace and diplomacy. Visit here and you will learn!!!

Did not know about President Regan visiting their home and other politicians and dignitaries. The public garden is a photographer's dream and I was thrilled to try out my new camera. Saw the expansive property along with the exterior of their house, Chinese pavilion, totem pole, golf course, retreat house with pool and guest bungalows. There's a small art collection as you walk in with a stellar view of the mountains. I recommend catching the 20 minute movie which provide context to the experience. There is a cafe and gift shop. One of the popular items is olive oil which is made from the olives grown on the premise. Also notable is this is staff - all very helpful to me and my mother who walks with a cane but needed wheelchair assistance during this visit.

I took care of the roof over my head but disregarded all that natural beauty that extended beyond property lines. This all changed when I took a natural resources class at College Of The Desert taught by professor Kurt Leuschner. I realized just how delicate the very ground I stood on was. This is where I also learned about Friends Of The Desert Mountains. Friends Of The Desert Mountains is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the conservation of land resources in the Coachella Valley. Some of their programs are trail stewardship, invasive weed control, interpretive hikes, trash cleanup and youth education. You can volunteer your time and experience a greater sense of pride and accomplishment in being a resident of the Coachella Valley. Worthwhile work, considering Friends Of The Desert Mountains has successfully protected over 50,000 acres of land since 1987, my backyard included.

I refused to join the DBA for years because it had a reputation as the "Desert Boozers…read moreAssociation." It was a bunch of middle-aged to older white guys who just wanted to get together and suck on cocktails once a month. In addition, it was trying to be very politically connected. Yuck, yuck, and yuck. Not terribly "business' oriented frankly. What a difference a few years makes. Over the past 6-7 years the association has taken a complete 180 and proven itself as a professional and formidable leader in the business community. Not only is the DBA for LGBT business people but it's for EVERYONE. And, everyone participates. With a membership of about 250, a typical, twice-monthly reception and mixer draws a minimum of 80 people in the summer and up to 130 in season--no other business association in the valley can claim that kind of participation ratio by its' members, period. The mixers are fun, lively, inclusive and a lot of business actually gets done. Most members have on-going, tangible success stories about building relationships and earning business. The DBA is ideal for any LGBT-friendly business person who is tired of the same "good old white boys club" chambers where people are shoving cards in your face and not really connecting. AND, every board member (straight/gay/women/men) actively and consistently participates & connects (or they won't last on the board). For $150 a year, there is no better networking investment available at this price. BUT it doesn't work unless you work it! Two thumbs up!
