TL;DR - Great food and quirky decor…read more On a rain lashed afternoon we dived in here for some lunch and were glad we did. The cafe is warm and welcoming, it's a traditional unit with some nice period features but decorated in bright vivid colours - including the green chimney which gives it its name. Since it was cold outside we went for something warm - the obligatory tea for two followed by a meat and potato pie for Sparky and a cheese and onion pie for me. Each came with mushy peas, chips and gravy. The presentation was spot on - a slice of a much larger pie served on wood with chips in a little basket and the "moist makers" in tiny cups. Everything tasted delicious and home made, and judging by the things we saw being served to other tables other items on the menu are probably just as good. A previous review for this place criticises it for being untidy (it was spick and span today), dirty toilets (they were immaculate), tatty menus (they were pristine and new) and poor service (staff were prompt and friendly). Food did take a little while to come, but only in line with being prepared freshly. In short, don't be put off by previous reviews - this is a great place and well worth a visit.

This is a smart and stylish restaurant. Well lit and air conditioned but the music is a bit load…read more The usual pizza & pasta but there are steaks too, garlic bread-pizza size, calamari & a steak with a beer for £30; not bad. Presentation was excellent and well cooked with reasonable portions. I have to say the recommendation of filet Rossini was a good one, very nice. All in all better than I expected when I left the hotel, well done hence 4 stars.

So much so we went again two days later so making this a double review I guess. The staff were very friendly and seemed to genuinely care that you enjoyed the meal (The number of places I visit where they just seem to wait for the time to call at the table and tick the box, yep! done that), here all the staff were genuine. A good look at the menu gave a very nice choice of flavours, their was a specials slip for the fresh seafood dish's of the day (I had a superb Halibut and king prawn dish on the second visit) We all had a starter and main, all very well liked, I had a king prawn starter and tried one of the others calamari (as you do), both perfect. For my main I just had to try the Fillet Rossini as suggested below, my conclusion is, well he's absolutely correct it's excellent! We will be visiting again, they also offer the menu as a take away option, so we are going to try that as well.

One of my favourite things to do is go for a day out somewhere, have a lovely walk about, and then…read moreon the way home, stop at a country pub for dinner. Makes for a change to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We were heading home and stopped at nearly every pub on the way. Of course, we did not plan well at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night. Many pubs were fully booked or wouldn't have tables until 8 or 9. Around 8 p.m. we arrived at The Stone Trough Inn. We were quite worried as the car park was full and it looked like there was a wedding reception in progress. The Stone Trough is a hotel and seems to be large enough to host an event like a wedding reception. As we walked in, this pub had a bit of a different feel to some of the other pubs that we had stopped at. This one had a more home-like feel. The mood was quite jovial and it seemed like most people knew each other... the working man's pub! Go straight to the bar to order drinks and if you would like to eat, just request a menu. Then you are free to take your menu and drinks to the table of your choice. There is outdoor seating as well and next to the door is a coat rack with some smoking jackets provided by the pub, if it is a bit chilly outside. Since the wedding reception seemed to be enjoying the main dining area, we chose to sit at one of the two tables across from the bar. The menu is fairly standard for pub fare, but does offer a little something for everyone. They also have a list of specials for the evening, but make sure you get the correct one as Mr. Snarky and I each had a different specials menu. I decided to forego a starter as I spotted Sticky Toffee Pudding on the dessert menu! Both of us ended up ordering the Fish and Chips. Our waitress was very friendly and was so attentive for as many tables as she was covering. Our Fish and Chips were lovely! While I'm partial to chips that are left an extra minute longer in the fryer, they were quite good. However, the fish, was the star of the show. The batter is made with one of the ales on tap and makes for a very dark finish when fried. However, the taste is wonderful and the batter is very light and doesn't overpower the fish! I tried the mushy peas, but I just think I'm not a fan of mushy peas. As predicted, I ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert while Mr. Snarky had the Knickerbocker Glory. Holy Sticky Toffee! The serving size was quite large and the presentation was lovely. I was most of the way through inhaling it when I realized I forgot to take a picture. Guess we'll just have to come back ;). Anyway, my only complaint is that there was not enough Sticky Toffee Sauce to go with the huge slice of cake. However, I love that it was served with Sticky Toffee Ice Cream and that it was dolloped on top so it could melt from the heat of the cake! Mr. Snarky's Knickerbocker Glory was impressive. He thought that the entire top was just whipped cream and sprinkles (or Hundreds and Thousands... I learnt something new!), but found out that under the light layer of whipped cream was another scoop of ice cream. So be warned as when he nearly knocked that scoop off the top of the glass. There is a t.v. to the side so if you are worried about missing any sport, don't worry. The place was so welcoming and of course the seats that we were sat in were very comfy, very conducive for spending a night drinking and chatting with friends. For a pint of cider, a pint of soda, two large servings of fish and chips, a huge plate of Sticky Toffee Pudding, and a serious Knickerbocker Glory, we came in under just £34. Great value, great food, and great atmosphere.
