My daughter walked into the Hoosier Mattress store in Anderson Indiana to look at a mattress for her first apartment after graduating from college. She was sold a mattress by Larry Harstead, the manager of this location. When she got home she began looking online and saw that the same mattress was being offered for $100 less on one website and $80 less on another. She called back and mentioned this to Larry who responded with typical used car salesmen tactics about how he was really giving her a better value because he was throwing in some freebies etc. finally, he said he would take $50 off the price. A day or two later when she called about a date for shipping he then said he was taking the price back up to $399 but would ship it for free. My daughter got nervous about the constantly changing terms and felt like she was being cheated so she called to cancel the transaction. Keep in mind that this mattress had not left their store yet. She was advised that if she wanted to cancel she would have to pay a 15% restocking fee. So, she has to pay $60-70 to cancel an order that hasn't left the store. I called and talked to Larry Harstead who gave me the same run around. I asked why they would want to punish a young girl who is just trying to get started in life with a restocking fee for an item she did not want and that did not have to be restocked. He then told me I could call the owner Aaron McIntyre to request the fee be waived but that he wouldn't be in until tomorrow. I will call Aaron McIntyre and if he sets this right, I will modify this review. But when I told Larry that I thought his policy was punitive and slimy and that he was punishing my daughter he hung up on me. So, save yourself the agony of having to deal with these hucksters and their bs fees and policies. If she has to pay this fee it will be the last money this crap company ever gets from her or anyone we can tell our story too. Stay away
Well, I just called Aaron McIntyre and he said he was too busy with other customers to talk to me about this and would call me back. I feel sorry for those other customers and will not hold my breath waiting for the return call.
I will give credit... he called me back. Tried to save the deal, offered a little more money off, but wouldn't budge on the restocking fee. He said it was to compensate his salesman for the lost time spent on my daughter? I said, It says restocking fee, not "backdoor compensation for salesman " fee.. I just asked him to waive the inappropriate fee and he said he might meet me halfway. I told him to do what you think is right then filed my BBB complaint. read more
