I would not recommend this assisted living facility to anyone looking for safe, attentive care for…read moretheir loved one. From the beginning, there was a lack of professionalism and poor communication. We were assured that our family member's needs could be managed, yet within days it became clear that the staff was unprepared and unable to properly handle even routine behavioral and medical concerns. Instead of working collaboratively to adjust care or keep us informed, decisions were made abruptly and without adequate explanation. We often had to initiate communication ourselves to find out what was happening. That is unacceptable when you are trusting people with the care of someone vulnerable. Families deserve transparency, compassion, and qualified care -- not excuses and reactive decision-making. Choosing assisted living is already an emotional and difficult process and especially being on the other side of the US it makes it even harder to deal with. This experience added unnecessary stress during a time when we needed reassurance and professionalism. Sadly, our experience did not reflect those standards. I strongly encourage others to ask detailed questions, document everything, and carefully evaluate other options before committing to this facility.

Solely interested in profitability with horrible personal care. My Mom was saved before more harm but left with sores on her bottom and a large skin patch ripped off. Covid restrictions used as excuse to increase fees and nickel and dime us to death. Wheel chair to transport within, to doctor visits and outside assessments is in horrible condition with broken foot rest and no rubber on the wheels thus no ability to apply break or hold in position. I have pictures to support all this. I told them I enlisted a case manager to help me understand care needs and I immediately got a 30 day eviction notice in spite of state eviction mandate. We were given 30 days to vacate during Christmas/New Year when availability of care housing is even worse than other time of the year. Eviction because they felt they could not provide proper care? Even simple first aid was referred to outside clinic as nursing staff can't even give simple first aid. Contact me for an ear full. STAY AWAY from this horrible excuse for care if you value the well being of yourself or loved one. Strictly profit motivated with poor attitude from clueless ED and RN over care of the resident. ate-oh-ate niner tree ate ate niner fore niner

Once the Drs diagnosed his medical problem and had him feeling better he was transferred to Hale Makua for rehab physio as he was a fall risk. He has been working very hard at physio daily and is walking and standing well now. I visited him in HM and he was in a double room, with a garden outlook, with access to a shared covered lanai area with dining tables and chairs. HM is airy with open corridors and shared spaces with gardens to sit in and staff present everywhere helping everyone. When I arrived I didn't know where my friend was and a staff member asked me if I needed assistance and walked me to his room chatting pleasantly as we walked. She knew exactly who he was and which room he was in. Kudos to the staff! I'm going in next week and will sit with him at the tables in the lanai area with ice cream. Hale Makua is a fantastic nursing facility for the elderly who cannot look after themselves, with a family feel, open and inviting. I was very impressed.

This skilled nursing facility which was the original main hospital in Wailuku has been in business since 1966. But yelpers must not have the need for this type of place. I brought my mother over here who will turn 100 years old in January. She was admitted last week. I must say it was a hard decision to take her there from a retirement home which which was basically an apartment with a dining room and then from our own home. It was the time of life that she needed much more care. I must say that the building is a little dated but overall it is well-maintained. The most important thing is that the staff is exemplary. I was so impressed by the caring and attention they give all of the residence. There is a big game room with television, videos, puzzles games and always a CNA on duty to help all of their clients. There is a beautiful sunroom also used for dining and then the big dining room. The grounds are beautiful. But again it's the people that are so impressive. I was told that there are 10 patients per CNA but it sure does not feel that way. I would highly suggest anyone looking for someplace for their loved one that needs 24 hour care to consider this, I won't call it a facility because it's at home where they want the residence and the families and friends of the residents to all feel like family. They have accomplished that 100%. God bless the staff at Hale Mākua Wailuku
