Some patients and family need the assistance of the facility for a care provider that can't or unable to give the care and don't or don't ask friends for help. I feel that the past support should be there. I experienced Kona Nakamura Hale still gives this service with a small staff. Hilo facility still gets donations from people. Maybe they have too many administrators than workers. I helped with fundraising for hospice for many years. Brought patients to facility for support and to pass. Wish they bring it back for option.

I always knew that this was a good option at one's end of life cycle. When my mom was in Hilo's Hale Anueanue for rehabilitation and I knew she wasn't improving much my mom was nearing her end. I contacted the HCC representative how had giving me her card. I had explained my interest with them working with my mom. My mom was quickly approved for treatment and we were able to meet with the newly appointed RN who talked me into all the processes and services that is provided. We were given many choices on what kind of care we wanted for my mom. HCC also has a team of 4 people who are dedicated on one patient too. They always call and as our concerns were and I'm grateful we took this route for my moms as she was slowly transitioning to entering the spiritual world. All services and meditation are 100% covered by insurance too . There are other things I may have overlooked about how in time of your need for a loved one this IS the company to help your Ohana. If you don't care for hospice treatment, do yourself a BIG favor and at least look into the idea of your loved one's last journey.

I think many of us don't take the time to write something appreciative…read more I've had two experiences with Hospice of Kona and they truly are compassionate. Back in 2009 My grandfather received care in his home and the nurses were professional and highly knowledgeable. We built great relationships with them during the duration. They were available when we needed to reach them and would respond fast. My grandmother appreciated their help and support too. They called every year a month or so before my grandfathers passing anniversary to let me know that they have additional support services if I needed to take advantage of that. My next experience with Hospice was back in 2015 my step father was passing. Because I couldn't accommodate his needs in my home he went to the Nakamaru House. Again, a great experience. Very compassionate with care. They took time to know him, converse with him. He knew things about the nurses too. The lady of the house even went out of her way to get him what he wanted to eat. Prosciutto and Apples. Overall Hospice has been nothing but respectful and understanding during these emotional challenging times and they were sensitive and respectful. When people think of hospice, they automatically think of death. Well- educate yourself with their services provided. They also do palliative care. Great thing about it is you don't need to drive anywhere for anything. They picked up prescriptions etc. Even had volunteers come into the homes to help with things that my grandmother couldn't do on her own. I couldn't have been so thankful knowing that my grandfather and stepfather for their last few days were in great hands.

I was impressed at how the religious aspects were presented as a choice, not a mandate. My advice to other families would be to be completely open with these professionals and then to trust their experience and let them do their jobs. I was more guarded than I should have been with my own feelings about end of life expectations, which lead to a bit of miscommunication. Beautiful, clean facility, but I was a bit hesitant about navigating the dark, private roads at night, so practice the route during the daytime to gain confidence. Parking is limited and under a prolific fruit tree, so be prepared to wash your car regularly to prevent damage to the paint.

She deteriorated very fast. When I took her to Maui Memorial Hospital in early September she just got worse and doctors opened the conversation with palliative care. It was a tough decision for my family. We didn't want to make it seem like we were giving up, but we also wanted to keep our mom comfortable and to go with dignity. We started looking into hospice facilities and Island Hospice responded fast. The coordinator came to the hospital and had talked to us about transitioning my mom to their facility and what their facility has to offer. My brothers wanted to tour the area before making the final decision, and the coordinator was able to arrange this tour. My mom lives in Kahului. We wanted to keep her close to home. So ultimately we decided to go with Island Hospice. The facility was in a residential neighborhood and it looked like a regular home. As soon as you walk inside, it's very roomy and inviting. It didn't have that hospital feeling. We had informed them we have a big family and most likely we would all be staying with my mom at the hospice facility. They gave us the big room and gave us couches to sleep in and a couple of chairs to sit. Besides us, my mom had many friends and acquaintances, and almost every day my mom had visitors, and they were accommodating with this. There were so many great nurses and CNAs that work there. They really took care of my mom. Knowing how close I am to my mother, they allowed me to be in the room while changing my mom. They included me and made me a part of my mom's care. While they were repositioning, giving her a bed bath, or changing my mom, I was there holding her hand. The goal was to manage my mom's pain and keep her comfortable as we wait for the inevitable and the staff provided this service and care for my mom. I could definitely say my mom's passing was peaceful. After she passed, they allowed us to stay with my mom for a few hours before calling the morgue. When the morgue picked up my mom, they did not kick us out. My mom died at 1:30 a.m. The staff knew we didn't sleep and we were all stressed with the loss of our mom, so they offered for us to stay there until the morning, but we didn't want to be a burden so we left at approximately 4am. The staff was very welcoming and very supportive. They not only provided comfort for my mom, but they also gave us comfort. They were very understanding of our situation and how difficult it was for me and my family to see our beloved mom in her dying stage. I highly recommend Island Hospice. To all the staff there from the nurses, CNA's, chaplains, social workers, and the coordinator, and etc., on behalf of my family, thank you!

Once the Drs diagnosed his medical problem and had him feeling better he was transferred to Hale Makua for rehab physio as he was a fall risk. He has been working very hard at physio daily and is walking and standing well now. I visited him in HM and he was in a double room, with a garden outlook, with access to a shared covered lanai area with dining tables and chairs. HM is airy with open corridors and shared spaces with gardens to sit in and staff present everywhere helping everyone. When I arrived I didn't know where my friend was and a staff member asked me if I needed assistance and walked me to his room chatting pleasantly as we walked. She knew exactly who he was and which room he was in. Kudos to the staff! I'm going in next week and will sit with him at the tables in the lanai area with ice cream. Hale Makua is a fantastic nursing facility for the elderly who cannot look after themselves, with a family feel, open and inviting. I was very impressed.

This skilled nursing facility which was the original main hospital in Wailuku has been in business since 1966. But yelpers must not have the need for this type of place. I brought my mother over here who will turn 100 years old in January. She was admitted last week. I must say it was a hard decision to take her there from a retirement home which which was basically an apartment with a dining room and then from our own home. It was the time of life that she needed much more care. I must say that the building is a little dated but overall it is well-maintained. The most important thing is that the staff is exemplary. I was so impressed by the caring and attention they give all of the residence. There is a big game room with television, videos, puzzles games and always a CNA on duty to help all of their clients. There is a beautiful sunroom also used for dining and then the big dining room. The grounds are beautiful. But again it's the people that are so impressive. I was told that there are 10 patients per CNA but it sure does not feel that way. I would highly suggest anyone looking for someplace for their loved one that needs 24 hour care to consider this, I won't call it a facility because it's at home where they want the residence and the families and friends of the residents to all feel like family. They have accomplished that 100%. God bless the staff at Hale Mākua Wailuku
