Hook was my absolute GO-TO Pharmacy when I lived in New Jersey - I have since moved, and have taken Adderall legitimately for ADD for years, What with this totally unacceptable nationwide backup, I felt like Diogenes in search of an honest man - there were NONE to be found. I am so happy this place opened up in my neighborhood. It is just what we needed. The owner is wonderful man who some of you may know from the pharmacy at the A&P. He has opened a quaint, throwback of a pharmacy on a prime corner in Paulus Hook. First and formost, he can handle all prescriptions. Not only can he handle them, he fills them fast & will text you when your order is ready for pick up. Pretty cool. He also carries a wide variety of OTC drugs, beauty/cosmetics, etc. Lots of little neighborhood shops carry little known brands, or sometimes they have no inventory. He keeps his place stocked with household names as well as some high end boutiquey brands. He is also very open to suggestions. If you ask him to carry a certain product or brand he will do his best to have it on the shelves the next time you come in. The customer service is just what you would expect from a neighborhood pharmacist. I really think the care in which he handles each customer has been lost on our generation of CVS, Rite Aid & Duane Reade monster drug stores. These are the types of business we should truly support in a neighborhood like Paulus Hook. read more

Hook Pharmacy is a small neighborhood pharmacy off Washington Street. I was referred to Dr. Ballande by Dr. Riva, and was impressed with his friendly level of service. They carry just about everything you need, so if you need medicine, vitamins, ointments, or anything- go here. They are better than any CVS or Walgreens pharmacy. Dr. Ballande will take the time to explain what you should use, how to use it, and makes sure you're not overpaying with insurance. He cares about your health and won't rip you off like the way a-lot of health insurance practices may do. Go here! read more

I really regret not coming to this place earlier. I always pass it on my way to and back from work, but never ventured inside. I'm always surprised at how many little gems there are in Jersey City. And this place is one of them. They have a lot of products you would find at a regular pharmacy except cheaper! Amazingly, I found my favorite brands of gummy vitamins here for at least a dollar less than at Shop Rite. Main reason why I like this place is the owner/pharmacist. He is very friendly and genuinely cares about his customers, unlike the Duane Reade pharmacists who look so glum all the time. When I came home after my surgery with a prescription for Vicodin, I was not sure if I needed quite that much pain killer. The owner was so sweet as he helped me pick out the right OTC, and prepared my prescription for me just in case. He even jotted down my address and gave me a number to call if the pain got worse - so that he could bring my prescription to me if I needed it later that day. I cannot tell you how comforting that was! There are so few genuine business owners out there, but this one truly cares about every single one if his customers. I was looking around for some hydrogen peroxide to clean my work bag, which was reeking with my friend's cat's urine (little bastard... cute though). Vinegar and baking soda hadn't worked. Luckily, Hook had some hydrogen peroxide at nearly half the price of other pharmacies and bodegas around the area. I agree with all of the glowing reviews here. I am very happy that I've chosen Hook Pharmacy as my primary source of getting prescriptions filled. I was looking for a place where I would get a little more personality, and also wanted to continue to support local businesses. The pharmacist/owner here is extremely welcoming, and remembers you right away. He fills prescriptions quickly and often I haven't had to wait very long to get them. If he has to order the prescription, he will send an automated text message when your prescription is ready to be picked up. I appreciated his honesty today when I was about to pick up a prescription, when he warned me about a high price tag on a script. When I decided to not purchase it after all, he completely understood and gave me no grief. I feel that I have gained his trust, because he is very transparent on why some prescriptions cost the way they do. I'm not sure if I would get that type of service if I was still getting my prescriptions at a CVS or Duane Reade. Hook Pharmacy also has a small but varied selection of over the counter medicines and toiletries as well, at fair prices. Its nice to browse and get what you need while waiting. If you don't need to shop and need to wait, there are a couple of chairs around for you to sit in. Hopefully I will continue to stay healthy.... but in the few cases that I'm not, I can count on Hook Pharmacy in my neighborhood. :) read more

Unbelievable service! I stumbled upon this pharmacy on a summer Friday afternoon incredibly sick and unable to find a doctor that would see me. The pharmacist/owner was so incredibly kind and made multiple calls on my behalf to local doctors to try to find me someone I could see. He was unable to find anyone still open that afternoon but followed up with me the next morning to check up on me and make sure I was able to schedule an appointment with one of the doctors he recommended. Really grateful - turns out I had bronchitis, upper respiratory infection and an ear infection!!! I now go to hook pharmacy for all my prescriptions and the owner is always very helpful and patient going over pricing with me before he fills my prescriptions. Two thumbs up! read more

I'm in town helping my bestie; she just had a baby. I needed to stop at a pharmacy to grab something for her, and stopped here as it was between her children's school and home (I've been picking them up while she rests). This the most quaint, and beautiful little place I've ever laid eyes on! I made sure to vocalize that to the owner once I was checking out...and he is the sweetest man. I've been meaning to write a review for awhile and am finally getting around to it! I honestly can't say enough good things about Hook Pharmacy. When I first moved to Jersey City, I was still using CVS as my main pharmacy. I often had to wait for a long time and it seemed like there was always a different person behind the counter each time I went. My sister told me about how great Hook was so I decided to give it a try. The owner/main pharmacist is one of the nicest guys in the area. He is always friendly and remembered me after only being in a few times. I've never had to wait longer then ten minutes for a prescription to be filled. Also, I feel comfortable asking him for recommendations on medicines when I have a specific problem. He always takes the time to talk to me and help with whatever I need. The other members of the staff have also always been friendly and very helpful. If you are looking for a great pharmacy in the Paulus Hook area, I would highly recommend Hook Pharmacy. I LOVE this place! Bellande is not just a great pharmacist; he is hilarious, too. He jokes with me nearly every time I am at the shop. It makes my day! I tend to need a bunch of meds for my 13-year-old, chronically ill dog. Bellande has price-matched all of them with the GoodRX app I was using previously at CVS. He has also offered to walk the prescriptions to my apartment in the past, and has been more than accommodating when I needed something last-minute (because I forgot to renew something!). Bellande's other employees are also really nice and helpful. I always have a great experience when I come in here. The owner is very very accomodating and informs you of co-pays, other generic drugs that may be cheaper, he will even direct you to another pharmacy if he doesn't have the drug or somewhere else can get if faster. Being new to the neighborhood my wife and I were lucky to have Hook recommended for us when our 9 month old had a series of ailments. Mr Baptiste was wonderful one every occcasion, taking plenty of time to explain prescriptions - and going above and beyond on a sat when he received a last minute prescription called in just before closing and was kind enough to wait for us to fight sat afternoon traffic to pick up the medicine. The pharmacist-owner, Bellande Jean-Baptiste, is not only knowledgeable about drugs AND insurance companies AND drug suppliers/sources but provides customer service that is orders of magnitude better than a drugstore chain can provide. Need an intelligent pharmacist to call the doctor, insurance company, and/or supplier? Bellande will get on the phone while you wait. Can't pick up but need delivery? Bellande will walk your prescription to your door. I needed a tetanus vaccination after Superstorm Sandy (I stabbed myself during clean up and the local ER was flooded out). I knew Hook Pharmacy did flu shots so I asked Bellande if he could give me a tetanus vaccination. He didn't have vaccine on hand but he got it for me the next day. (Cost? A small fraction of what the ER would have charged my insurance company.) In the downtown JC area, you cannot find a better, more attentive and trustworthy pharmacist. read more

After sitting on hold with Duane Reed for 20 minutes and waiting on line there while customers are ignored, I changed my prescriptions to this local pharmacy. The owner not only got me a 'vacation variance' (which I didn't even know existed) by calling my insurance company, he filled everything pronto AND sent me a text when he was done. Urgent care sent my prescription to Hook and even though the pharmacist was working alone, she took pity on me and delivered by prescription as I did not have the energy to walk over and get it myself.
