Honor Trading Post was our go-to for kayaking down the lower Platte River! Everyone was so nice & helpful, it really made the trip down the river a memorable experience. The livery had all the essentials for your trip; water shoes, sandwiches, cold drinks, ice, souvenirs, and so much more! They were stocked with whatever you needed. The team unloaded our kayaks & brought them down to the river with us, along with our paddles & life floats. For the record, they have plenty life jackets for whoever needs them. Any child under the age of 6 is required to wear one. The river flows gently & most of the trip is shallow enough to touch, I never felt in danger without a life vest. My favorite parts of the river were paddling through Loon Lake, the crystal clear water, and the end of the trip where the Platte meets Lake Michigan. I booked a kayaking trip on the Platte River for my (almost) 10-year-old son and I. It was easy to reserve everything on their website (we actually booked the morning of our trip.) The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. My son had only been kayaking one other time, and he loved being in his own kayak. The river was slow and calm, perfect for a child to learn how to kayak. Parts of the river did get quite busy (we went on a beautiful Saturday) - there was one area where we navigated around a group of about 50-60 "innertubers." We packed up a couple of sandwiches and purchased some drinks and a cooler at the Trading Post before parking our car at the end of the river (at Lake Michigan.) I loved how at the end of the trip, we could hop right out of the river and into our car. One of the staff members drove us back to the drop-in spot (they had already prepared our kayaks for us to hop right in!) Note: there is an extra $25 fee involved to park your car in the lot at the end of the river. Would highly recommend booking with The Trading Post for anyone looking to check out the Platte River! We were staying in Glen Arbor, and it was only a 30-minute drive away. read more

So we can't comment on the kayak, canoe, tube rentals as we did not take advantage of these on this trip. But they do a brisk business with those, even with the COVID restrictions in force, running shuttles constantly on the weekends for all the folks hitting the Platte River. We were in the Trading Post for food, drink, and take-out orders. It's not a big place, but you can get the essentials for groceries (snacks, the core items you need in the fridge and kitchen, beer, wine, ice cream...). We were there several times on this last trip to get the stuff we ran out of when we did not want to drive all the way in to town. We liked that because the people there were so friendly and helpful, we were glad to give them our business! But we also "sampled" their take-out food, ordering pizza one night and sandwiches on two other occasions. I especially liked the pizza as it had that "fresh" taste that you can only get from good ingredients, and the sandwiches were surprisingly tasty (comes with a bag of chips, of course). These were good meals to break away from cooking all week. Overall, really liked the place and the people. We will be regulars whenever we are up that way! read more

Very friendly & efficient operation! Our family had a relaxing and fun time on our first tubing outing. The river was calm and warm despite the day starting out at 46 degrees and only going up to 72. Honor Trading Post had everything we needed for drinks and a picnic. There's a great spot for kids to swim at the end point. Recommend going in the earlier part of the day--it was quiet when we started out and we could see many more groups heading out as we finished up. Also good to get to HTP a good 30-40 mins before your reservation to sign papers, buy food, etc. read more

Love the Honor Trading Post. The staff is great! The pizza and subs are fantastic! Book a canoe trip you'll love it! If you are in the area this is a great family owned and operated family business, stop in and get some ice cream or much needed supplies for your cabins! They have great merchandise as well! **Okay for rentals, but skip the food.** I know it's summer, and working in a hot kitchen is tough - but guys, you're preparing food in tank shirts! Cover those hairy, sweaty armpits with a T-shirt, please. You also need to wear your masks properly, covering your mouth AND nose. Signed up to do the long tubing course. We got open tubes and a cooler tube. Tubes had water bottle holders. You follow the van and park your car at the end, ride the van to the start and float back to your car. We recommend you bring a cooler with wheels as the drop off point is a good 15 minute walk across gravel/sand to Platt River. read more

We went with a group of 5 on our second tubing trip down the Platte river. The Post takes you down to the launch spot but you have to walk a good 200-300 feet to get there with your tube in hand. The pricing for tubing is pretty reasonable since it's a 2 hour trip (although it has taken us about 4 hours each time we have gone). We get tubes with no bottoms as well as a cooler tube - there's a lot of "towing" needed to be done to avoid getting stuck in the marshes along the Platte and you need a snack in the middle sometimes the only reason i can't give a 5 star review is that each time we've gone there has been a less than pleasant employee or two, but luckily they're only part of the equation for a short while. They seem uptight and unwilling to answer questions without treating you like you're stupid. I thought this was just a fluke and they had a bad day, but after going there multiple times the employees in the shop have been the same each time. If you have the time to do the two hour trip (as opposed to the one Hour trip which are both the same price), absolutely do it. The lake at the end of the trip is so beautiful that the trip is worth it for that alone. The water in this part of Lake Michigan is clear as day and the view of the mountains in the distance is like something out of a storybook. read more

Just be careful on Deadstream Road. It's 35 mph because of all of the cottages and a cop hangs out right by the Trading Post to pop people for speeding. Sore spot on an otherwise good summer last year! And this year I was extremely careful! read more

We recently went on a "2 hour" river tubing trip down the Platte River with them. Reservations, logistics and the like are all convenient and in good order. The only issue was with the river itself. Very high and slow, which to their credit they did warn us, but maybe should recommend taking a paddle. The tube float took us 4 hours and at times if we weren't hanging off back swim-powering or walking along we were going backwards. Its a beautiful area and we ultimately enjoyed, just be aware what you are signing up for. read more

The employees at the Trading Post were polite and helpful; we were shorted our cooler tube, but they sent another one over in about 10 minutes or so. The store was well stocked with everyThe tubes were durable, the river was beautiful, and we very much enjoyed our float down the river. The bad: Although it was well explained, the shuttle service is confusing. Also, the unexpected (unpleasant) surprise of having to pay $20 for a national park pass that's only good for 7 days is ridiculous. I understand it's a money maker, but it would be much more fair to sell day passes for $5-$10 instead of paying $20 for a few hours of parking. Also, 200 yards doesn't seem that far in theory, but lugging a cooler and floats that far could be a little trying for someone who has trouble walking; a warning would be good on the website for this. Nice and friendly place. Food was good. Many grocery choices too. We used this place to raft down the Platte River. They were very helpful and nice. However, please be warned that they may not have enough life preservers. Which I would highly recommend for kids. There is a short area of the river that is definitely over your head. Due to windy conditions we found it impossible navigate. It was scary for the kids because it was over their head and we had no life preservers. Luckily a nearby kayaker towed us to the opposite shoreline where we were able to get out and walk to our car. read more

Great service! Liked driving down and leaving our car at the end of the trip so when you're done, you just pull out the kayaks, and head out. The staff at the honor post were very nice and helpful. There's also a cute store with everything you could possibly need for your kayak trip. We frequent this place every time we are up in Michigan when they are open. They are just down the road from us. Extremely kind and helpful. Always greeted with a smile and good conversations. Great place to stop for supplies, snacks, and drinks for the beach and travels. We've bought pizza from here often when we are looking pretty rough from a days worth of outside adventures, and don't want to dine in a restaurant. We haven't used the canoe/kayak/stand up surf boards yet. I'm not sure quite why. I proudly wear my trading post hat as much as I can, and am happy to be a customer of theirs. Nice atmosphere. Last year we used Riverside and it was terrible, and this year we wanted to try the river again, and based of the recommendation of someone we met on the river a year ago, we tried this place. It was so much easier. We paid, waited about 15 minutes, and followed a bus in our vehicle down to the lake. We hopped in the bus, and rode to the drop-in point. That was it, simple. At the end of the river, at the lake, we left our canoe with the employees, and hung out at the beach for the afternoon. read more

We did the lower Platte River today tubing. A few warnings... it'd VERY slow. What was supposed to be a 1 hour trip was a 3 hour trip... and that was with us paddling with our arms and getting in the water and pulling the tubes. We did not move. It was not fun with two young kids when we expected to only be on there for an hour. Also we were told that the water was less than 6 ft deep in most spots and only small pockets that were about 6 feet deep. Also wrong. We couldn't reach for the second half of the River. You need to bring an ore to row yourself seriously. We probably would have been there for 5 hours if we didn't get in the water. Also I wouldn't even recommend a tube. Get a kayak. And because of how deep a lot of the parts were I would grab a life jacket for the adults. Definitely the kids. Probably won't do this again. The company however was good and the tubes were good. I would just say some of their info wasn't as accurate as it should be. read more

Tubing down the Platte River is great, and a lot of fun. But The Honor Trading Post was sloppy. Our first problem was rope. I was assured they had rope to use, so we could tie our rented tubes together, even after I was adamant that I could bring my own. But when it got my turn to get tubes, they had run out. Oops...out of luck. We were simply told to just try to use the little pieces (scraps) still attached to the tubes. Our second problem was the shuttle service. I was told we would be parking our car near the end of the river, and the shuttle would bring us back to the beginning, so our car would be waiting for us when we finished tubing. That's wrong. We found out later that the shuttle only brings you back to the start from wherever you happen to find a place to park. And for us that was a mile from the end! You get to find your own way back to your car. Luckily for us there was a shuttle from Riverside Canoe Trips actually at the end of the river offering to bring people back to their cars. And the driver didn't care how we got there or who we rented from. Because he brought us the mile back to our car, next time my business will go to Riverside Canoe Trips. read more

Recently did a 2 person kayak rental from Honor Trading Post. Had no issues with the process. I noticed that they seemed to be making a lot of exceptions for other customers, such as not going after them for leaving paddles at the drip point instead of bringing them back to the store. They are definitely aiming to please. had a lot of fun on the lower Platte trip but that is really up to you to enjoy the experience. They just drop you off and that's all. The driver was open to talking and answering questions but you have to ask. Definitely start with the shorter lower Platte trip if you have little experience with kayaking. read more

My wife and I went here the other day and rented tubes to go floating on the river. Rental process without a reservation was super easy, plenty of food/drinks/camping/swimming gear for sale, and everyone was super friendly. I lucked out because they had water shoes for sale ($15 per pair) because I forgot to bring my own. Spent a lovely morning floating down the quiet river. My advice is to get there early (no later than 10) because the parking lot at the beach fills up quite a bit. We finished our journey down the river at 12:30 and there were hundreds of cars parked back up on the road so it was nice getting out early before the river filled up and before the sun was hitting too hard. read more

Check in was easy for renting tubes- didn't need reservations and credit card minimum was only $5. They sell snacks, pizza, and alcohol at their store. No glass allowed on the water and shoes are recommended (you will walk on gravel). Everything was really easy! read more
