The primary reason for the low rating is safety. After all, what could be more important than safety when renting a boat.
Firstly, somehow they forgot about our reservation. We arrived to the launch dock at 11:45, 15 minutes early as instructed. When nobody showed after a while I finally called. The owner apologized and got a boat there by 12:20, 35 minutes later than we were told. It wasn't a big deal for us because we were not on a schedule but definitely makes you wonder about the organization of this business. They said they only had one other reservation around that time so it is not like they were super busy or anything.
The primary safety issue is that we had a large inner tube that was placed in the front part of our boat that was not secured in any way. Unsurprisingly, as soon as we got the boat up to full speed, this inner tube flew right over the boat. It could have easily hit the driver in the head but it flew down the middle of the boat. While flying off the boat, the rope attached to the tube ran across my wife's arm and face giving her rope burns. I instinctively grabbed the rope to try to stop it and the rope nearly yanked my arm off and I let go. But the damage had been done. My shoulder was fractured. When the boat was dropped off there were two men who gave us instructions on boat operation. We repeatedly emphasized that we were complete novices. Neither of them mentioned that an unsecured tube could fly over the boat, so we never imagined that it would happen.
I called the owner and explained what had happened. I thought that he would be upset with his employees for either not explaining to us that an unsecured large tube on a speedboat could fly over the boat if placed in the front where they had put it, or he would be upset with them for not securing the tube somehow. Neither. He acted very surprised that this could happen. I would bet that 10 times out of 10 the tube would fly out of the boat when the boat was at full speed. It happened immediately as soon as we did it the first tine. Putting a large tube unsecured in the front of a speed boat seems like the worst thing to do. I was quite annoyed after the conversation with the owner. Reading later, I read that there is a Federal Law requiring the boat owner to file a Boating Accident Report within 48 hours of an accident that involves an injury beyond basic first aid. I'm pretty sure this was not done even though the boat owner knew that we were going to the ER. The owner expressed sympathy that I was hurt but had nothing to say about the safety oversight.
The boat was dropped off by two men that worked for the owner. In general these two men did not seem to be very concerned with safety, they were more focused on operating the boat such that we did not damage the propeller. We had to ask them for life jackets for the adults who wanted them. The night before, being a complete newbie, I had done some reading on towing water skiers and tubers and it said to turn the engine off when they enter the water to get ready. Neither of the two mentioned this even though they knew we were complete beginners. So I asked them about it and they were like, "Oh yeah, you shut the engine then". I wouldn't be surprised if in the future somebody renting from Glen Lake Marine suffered a gruesome propeller injury. And they made no mention at all that the large inner tube should be secured or it could fly off the front of the boat at high speed.
Now my wife is dealing with painful rope burns while I have a fractured humerus because of Glen Lake Marine's lack of attention to boating safety. read more
